I was a bit excited to see the カニ at the start of this chapter… but then nothing much happened. It didn’t even end up on the すいか, which I thought was going to be inevitable after it was named 塩.
Completely different topic, but is it normal for junior high students to be graded on 10? All the grades I’ve seen so far (from high school students) were on 5 as well, so I assumed the whole education system was using that scale…

I get a bit lost in all the てs in Komari’s speech bubble. Is it basically “you said you were bringing (back) the watermelons chilling in the river”? So 持って来て meaning ‘bring’, the next って signalling a quote, and then いってた signalling past continuous? And then a じゃん thrown in for good measure / to turn it into “didn’t you say…”?

I think I’m just being dim, but what does いわれてもなー mean, from the teacher’s speech bubble? I think it’s the passive form of 言う, and she’s saying “nobody told you, huh?”, but I don’t really know how the もなー bit is working.

I’m vaguely getting that Natsumi says “I wish (my) life was as sweet as this”, but I don’t quite understand what role the のに is playing:

Yep. The じゃん is adding a sense of frustration here, so “didn’t you say…” sounds like a good way to phrase it.
“Even if you tell me that…” (even if I am subjected to you telling me that…) (it won’t do anything)
The “that” is なんで
のに is a conditional of regret (don’t know how to phrase that differently). “If only it was …”
いいのに “it would be fine if/it would have been fine if…” (but it’s not the case)
You have all the parts, but I don’t think you’re putting them together right. I read it as “Didn’t (I/teacher/whoever) tell you to bring (back) the watermelon chilling in the river?” (probably rhetorical)
I think your translation would have to be written as 持ってくる. But since it’s もってきて I think someone told Natsumi to bring it back.
I’m thinking I might re-read this whole volume at some point with a view to making sure I’m really understanding the grammar. I’m not very good at casual language, so it would be good practice!
Got around to reading this chapter last night. I was also disappointed there wan’t some mischief involving the カニ
I wonder if this chapter will be prophetic of my impending summer.
Life got busy just when the club started reading のんのんびより and the first few chapters seemed pretty difficult so I stopped for a while, but I’ve finally managed to catch up in the past two weeks. It always amazes me how much easier to read the last few chapters of whatever we read are compared to the beginning. I read two chapters today understanding most things. At first I would maybe read one third and barely get what was going on.
I guess that is probably why the last chapters have so few comments?
I agree, there’s just no reason to ask questions. People could still post about the story, though, but it tends to go around the line of “that was nice/fun” (I’m also guilty of that, and to be fair, sometimes that’s all there is to say).
Incidentally, I don’t think anyone answered my question (I guess I’m better off googling it)
