I spilled coffee on my copy this morning… then while I was reading it someone accidentally put the dust cover in the bin ;-;. I was able to retrieve it but safe to say this book has not had a good day today! This weeks reading was pretty painless (except that I had to use a paper dictionary because I didn’t have internet), there’s just one thing I wasn’t sure about:

What’s ってば doing here? To my understanding, ってば is just the quotative/topic-marking particle って combined with the conditional particle ば to mean something along the lines if “if you say…” or “if you are…”, but I’m not sure how that would make sense here

Maggie-Sensei has a post on って which mentions:

Also we finish the sentence with って in casual conversation when repeat or stress our own quote showing our frustration/when you emphasize what you are saying, make your point showing your strong feelings)

It is also very common to use this form with,

ってば ( = tteba)

You add ば ( = ba) to show your frustration.

And the part relevant to Ookami-chan here is:

Sometimes you add it when you talk to someone to get their attention — especially common among girls or children. (Usually you say this when you keep talking to the person but they don’t pay attention to you.)

FYI, ガツンと言う is a set-phrase-ish thing. This is put into causative and the てもらう form is the “get someone to do x” form, but combined with the causative form, it has a few other uses, Tofugu has an article about this. As far as I understand, what’s happening here, is basically “I’m going to give you a piece of my mind”

This is one of those cases, where trying to apply a grammar point that resembles what appears there is a huge pitfall.

Here の and に are separate, の acts as a nominalizer for what’s before it, and に is presenting the target for the verb in the sentence.

ドライアド様と遊ぶ - Playing with Dryad
ドライアド様と遊ぶの - “The” Playing with Dryad
ドライアド様と遊ぶのに - Here: of playing with dryad
…にふさわしい - worthy of …
…か試してあげる - To test whether …

Put together, “I’m going to test if you are worthy of playing with Dryad”

I am struggling quite a bit this week. All of the individual words make sense to me, but putting them together I’m not quite sure that I’m grasping all the context and nuance. I’m going to write out my work on a few pages this week, both to force me to do the work, and perhaps so others can let me know if I ’ got it’.

I wanted to pay a bit more attention to the onomatopeia this week, and I really enjoyed the extra depth. It never ceases to amaze me how text effects adds an extra layer of information in Japanese manga. I loved finding out that じー means “Not taking your eyes off your target”.

p.74 - Points already answered above

My best guess is ”What would we do if anything happened to Dryad?" I thought あったら was a conditional conjunction of ある. Is の used as a question particle, with よ being added as extra emphasis for the question?

それに私といるよりたのしそうだし…
Besides, it looks like (she’s) having more fun than with me.

とにかくこのままじゃダメよ
Regardless, this won’t do! (this way is bad)

一度ガツンと言わせてもらうわ
Here’s where I was mostly struggling. one time + sternly + causative of talking + getting someone to do something. My thought on a cursory reading was “I’ll let her have a strern talking-to”, but a more literal translation might be “I’ll get her to let me give her a stern talk”?

怒られるのかな
This is the passive tense of “To get angry”, with a question, and perhaps. Tofugu told me that there’s something such as “indirect passive”, which is difficult to translate in English. My best guess would be “Is she angry with me?”

怒られる is quite literally equal to “to be made angry”, that’s sadly the English passive of “to get angry”, as in “he has been made angry”. That’s kinda how the passive works out here.

I’m pretty sure that’s just how Kitsune-san looks like by default. Ookami’s angled bracket eye afaik is “being uncomfortable”. Also you missed her wavy mouth from your diagram >~<.

She’s not asking she’s saying that she can help her with the patrol, or as you’ve said, more literally, “Me helping with your patrol is ok”. With this, わよ makes more sense

I normally try to do my reading on Saturday but I was away on holiday so I am only just getting around to doing it now. Struggled a little bit where this section was a bit wordier but I got there in the end.

Discovered a good few new words and kanji as well:

さっきから is basically a single unit meaning “since some time ago”. さっき is in itself “earlier”, から is “since”, so “since earlier”, or “since some time ago”. This is reinforced with the ずっと meaning “doing X continuously”. “Tori-san, Kitsune-san has been watching us since a bit ago” (こっち can often refer to peeps, same for the other っち’s, it should be quite formal, since it’s very indirect).

So by default ばかり means “only”, but it’s very versatile. In this case for example, it’s pretty much actinga s a way to reinforce, how much Dryad went to Ookami-chan’s place.
Broken down:
あれから - SInce then
オカミちゃんのところに - to Ookami-chan’s place
出かけてばかり - “Only” went there
“She’s been only going to Ookami’s place ever since”, but in reality this is closer to “She’s been going there a lot”.

私といる is acting here as a single entity. 私と → with me, いる → being = being with me
This is placed before より so “being with me” is the one that something is more than, here “more fun-seeming”. “That is more fun-seeming, than being with me” → “It seems that it’s more fun [being with her[ than being with me”.

Earlier I mentioned this ガツンと言う is a set phrase meaning “to tell a person”. I won’t go into much detail here, see my earlier post about it if you want that, but this is roughly the “I’ll let her know once and for all” feeling.

結局 can act as a sort of “In the end” “I ended up”.
Then なってしまった tells you what happened, which is “ついていくこと” “following along thing” “It became a following along thing”, and since the assumed subject is first person, this is “I ended up following her”.

This isn’t “to see”, rather “てみる” to attempt to do something. This is then turned into conditional form and attached an いい, which is a common way of saying “It’s good to X” (literally: If it’s X, that’s good). It’s a bit different here, because instead of いい it’s いいチャンス which is “It’s a good chance to do X”, so “It’s a good chance to try to think about it” I guess.

試す is “to test” as well. Especially with あげる, literally: “to give a testing”. This sentence contains an inner clause:
“ドライアド様遊びのにふさわしいか”, you know it’s an inner clause, because か is a sentence final particle.
Let’s break it down
ドライアド様 - Dryad-sama, there’s an omitted に here, so basically “With Dryad-sama”
遊びの - 遊ぶ + nominalizer の, “Playing”
に - here: of, as in “worthy of”
Sofar this was “ドライアド様遊びのに” “Of playing with Dryad-sama”
ふさわしいか - “Is worthy of”
So the whole thing is “Is she worthy of playing with dryad sama”.
The rest is “That I’ll test”, or “I’ll test her if she’s worthy of playing with Dryad-sama”

ってば is a sort of “crying out loud”, or less strictly “come on”

まちか could be, but that’s just a misread, it’s まさか (you’ll hear it often in Anime, if you pay attention to when the hero’s spoil the villain’s plan). It’s roughly “Impossible”, but it’s often said with the meaning of “that can’t be”

しびれる is “to go numb” in this case, it doesn’t have positive meaning.
くらい is “to the extent of X”, attaching after X, so this is “To the extent of going numb”
すっぱい as you’ve found, is sour
Put together sofar “It’s sour to the extent of [making your mouth] go numb”
実み pronounced this way is “fruit”
“The fruit should be so sour, that it should make her mouth go numb”. Kinda a d*** move.

Some notes and my breakdown attempt for the first panel of page 74.

Some panels I dive into and try to be thorough on, and others I just try to understand the basics of it. Anywho, this one panel easily took me 30+ mins but now I think I understand it.

なんて話しかけよう…

The first part, なんて - I kept looking elsewhere for it, then eventually looked up the meaning, pretty simple after all: how... or what...:

I learned that 話しかける (I thought this was two separate words at first) means to begin to talk; to start a conversation:

And it’s in the volitional form (話しかけよう), from Miku Real Japanese, I learned that (slightly paraphrasing):

You can use volitional form to talk to yourself before you start doing something, as a declaration to someone nearby or yourself.

So, from my understanding, なんて話しかけよう… implies something like:

How should I start the conversation? What should I say?

These pages were quite rough for me. Lots of vocab lookups, and figuring out the grammar. With the help of the explanations, I now understand most of it. But there’s one sentence that has me quite clueless.

p.83

きつね：木が倒れたりしてたら大変だもんね
Kitsune: Tree’s collapsing would be a bad thing

Could someone please break down the grammar of this sentence for me? I think たら is the conditional, but I don’t understand してたら. And is the たり in 倒れたり a grammar point that could be translated as “things like”…? I thought it always needed at least two instances, but maybe a single one like this also gets the point across?
