Hi! I am joining this book club late, but I think better late than never.

I found a free digital copy of volume 1 of ちいさな森のオオカミちゃん on Comic Walker. I can’t tell whether it’s a temporary promotional thing (I can’t read the website well enough to tell lol), but it seems to be legit.

Comic walker is very much legal, it’s owned by the publisher, Kadokawa. Apparently they had enough of pirate sites, so they just went and did it for free themselves. I assume they are riding on the idea, that you will most likely buy the rest, there’s a long time between publishing a manga and releasing it for free, and most of the sales are actually generated in the first few weeks after releasing a new volume.

Looking at the volume, it’s not the best of quality, which might be frustrating, considering the furigana is quite hard to read, but imo @ChristopherFritz should add this as an option for those that would like to read it, but don’t have the funds.

The important part is this section:

配信期限 : 〜2023/07/14 10:59

It’s available until July 14th, right after we start chapter 5 (of 7 chapters).

That’s the bookwalker sale I believe, not the manga itself

At least it came off to me like that

Edit: nvm, I saw the wrong thing, might be actually until then

I’ll admit I’m going less off of “I understand the meaning of these Japanese words in context” and more off of “this is how I think I saw it work previously on ComicWalker”.

For the curious, here is my understanding, which may be incorrect:

I believe this is when “something free to read” appeared, which in this case is volume 1.

This, I believe, is when there will be a new free thing. Not planned, but for an actively running comic you may see new weekly chapters.

We can see a similar situation with the よつばと! page, where the latest freebie appeared on 2021/02/27, with no known date for the next freebie.

In the case of よつばと!, the current freebie (for over two years now) has been chapter 103. Looking in the back number section, there’s no expiration date listed on it:

(I have seen back-number items go away without an expiration date listed, but I don’t know how common that is.)

For our Wolf-chan, the back-number listing for volume 1 is:

image

配信(はいしん)期限(きげん) = distribution period(?)

Separately (but possibly related), both volumes are on sale on BookWalker for a limited time:

My confidence level in understanding all of this is: 50%

Thanks for posting the reasoning behind it. I looked up 配信期限 in a dictionary, it only told me that 配信期限指定 meant “Computer terminology: latest delivery designation”, so I was still confused

I’m extremely bad at participating in this club. Yesterday I finally caught up and finished chapter 3 (before I stopped reading 2/3 into chapter 1, back in week 2), so for a moment everything looked good, but then I read chapter 4 and 5 today, and now I’m out of sync again.

Really though, this seems like such a good first-time manga! I think this is the one that I’m gonna recommend from now on if anybody wants a manga to start out with.

I blame this manga for being too binge-able

I’m still bad at posting these weekly, but we’re up to week nine!

Week ten brings us up to chapter 7, and a new character whose manner of speech should be interesting.

How do I seem to forget to post every other week? (Maybe I need to write a bot that posts for me…)

This week finishes off our penultimate chapter for the volume:

Since we’re close to the finish line, I just wanted to raise the question again on whether we’re doing an offshot of the club for the next volume (e.g. do we need a poll?).

Mostly asking since I haven’t been in the club long but I really liked how good a read this series has been so I’m eager to continue it. I can understand if we want to delay it a little so it doesn’t conflict too much with Horimiya but I also don’t want it be forgotten.

@ChristopherFritz I believe you said you would organise something if there was demand but if need any help with the ogranisation, I’m happy to take it over with some direction from you.

I think I’ve seen enough interest not to need a poll for interest, but other questions could also be added as polls.

What are your plans for volume 2?
  • I would like to read along with an offshoot book club.
  • I plan to read it on my own or have already read it.
  • I do not plan to read it.

Most of volume 1 went at a pace of half a chapter per week. By now, you should know whether you can handle a whole chapter of this manga in one week or need a slower pace.

What reading paces do you feel you would be comfortable with?
  • Read one chapter in one week.
  • Read one chapter split across two weeks.

For volume 1, the final chapter is set to be one week. Then there is a one-week break before Horimiya begins. Horimiya is a more difficult series, but reading will begin slowly to counter this.

Are you planning to join the Horimiya book club alongside volume 2 of Ookami-chan?
  • Yes, and I am confident I can keep up with both.
  • Yes, but I do not know whether I can keep up with both.
  • No

I might read along if we increase the pace to one chapter a week but I’m unlikely to otherwise - I’ll definitely still read the book and participate in the threads where I can (though so far I haven’t had many chances to), I’ll just read it at my own pace rather than the book club’s

I ticked both options, 1 chapter per week and 1 chapter per 2 weeks to indicate I would join either way, but would prefer 1 chapter per week. Not sure if I shouldn’t have ticked the 1 chapter per 2 weeks in that case.

I know myself and I’m just gonna binge the whole thing in one go, but I’ll definitely be interested in joining in with the book club to discuss and ask/answer questions
