Discussion Guidelines
Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Will you be reading along with us this week?
I’m reading along
I’m still reading but haven’t reached this point yet
I’ve already read this previously, but I’m here for the discussion
These half chapters are such a tease! I admit I am a little ahead of the club…
Best bits
The sheer glee on page 15 about going outside together, compared with the sheer horror on dinos face as they are (minor spoiler for next week) casually talking about cat food on page 18.
I think it’s fine to just think about だ and です as “be” and completely ignore what kind of linguistic concept it is. I just tend to mention it, probably unnecessarily, due to years of conditioning from reading about Japanese grammar .
No clue! I don’t believe I have ever heard the Copula term before outside of this thread. Or I have, and it was back in HS, and I have slept many moons since then. English Grammar was not my strong suit, regardless of whether it is my first language.
But I believe you are right, it’s probably easier to just think of だ&です as Be lol.
I thiink in both cases what’s happening is phonetic contraction, i.e. お[X]か (where the お can be the vowel part of こ、ど, etc.) becomes おっか in casual questions because that’s easier to say?
So, i didn’t need to look up anything to understand the reading.
Now did i understand every word in the sentence. No. But did i understand enough of the rest of the sentence to get its context? Yup. So feels pretty good.
Page 13
つっても being a good example of word no idea what it means, but feels like “also”. Going “i also don’t have plans” but the crux of the sentence is the lack of plans which i did get
Tobias mentioned this in a reply a few comments up, つっても is a contraction of と言っても. つう is a really common sound replacement for と言う in spoken speech (and bc of that that, manga). Here a translation is more like “speaking of which” or something along those lines.
Not at all surprised that’s the exact meaning for つっても. Very much fits the context of the scene.
Perhaps the thing i’m enjoying the most is trying to get the meaning of words and sentences though context clues. Knowing A and C and puzzling out B. I don’t necessarily get B 100%, but i can know what its trying to say so i can understand.
Then come here talk about what is the 100% and help refine me knowledge further.
This week went pretty well for me! Didn’t need to do any vocab lookups, and had much better luck with the contractions this time. I’m finding that reading the text aloud in my head really helps the slang make sense somehow… I think that’s good?
(kinda hard to translate? maybe something like:) Yeah, guess not, huh?
なんか予定あんの? had me a bit confused. I had all of the pieces there but wasn’t sure how to put them together. Still, got the general idea that she was asking if Dino had plans.
p15
Wanna go somewhere?
figured out this contraction on my own! NICE
p16
Where d’ya wanna go?
meow, meow, meow
どこ行こっか — Had a little trouble differentiating this from the previous sentence.
I’m working on getting my grammar studies caught up, since I’m kinda all over the place. Still need to review the volitional form so this contraction wasn’t clear at first
I anxiously anticipate next week, but for now I’m back to reading previous ABBC ハピネス, which is a totally different vibe.
Rushing through all of this to catch up. I definitely need to look lots up but I’m just not going to right now. Once I finish this post I am going to go back through and read all of the conversation from week 1 up to now. I think that will help a lot. Then I will do another reading to this point but I may look up some of the little stuff that isn’t in the sheets.
What I think it says
13: today is my day off.
What will I do today??
14: Dino, what are your plans for today?
Shakes his head meaning nothing, or he doesn’t know.
Thats okay?? Idk what this little bit means.
This week was easier to work through for me, feels really good to get through some pages and know mostly what was said without having to look anything up
Glad to have seen the bookclub starting up, I don’t think I would have found this manga myself and it’s fun so far.
