Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

 1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
 2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
 3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
 • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
 • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Well, this week doesn’t look too bad. Here are my attempts!

Page 73

Chapter 8 I wonder what I should borrow
Thank goodness, they’re still open
I’ll rent one of each that I like

Page 74

I said only one!
Also
Make it a movie instead of a show

Page 75

You’re not interested, right?
Ah
Look, isn’t this actress cute?

Page 76

Eh? Shota-chan?
Ah, Kaede
Eh!? Kaede!? Why are you here!?
Ah, my bad I’ll leave
I’m going I’m going
…Why are you like this

Page 77

Ah
Good isn’t it
I’ll choose this one.
Eh? This one?
You’ve made your choice Dinosaur?

Page 78

This one is scary you know, a woman comes out of a well you know
Hmmm
Alright
Lets watch both movies
It’s alright to start with mine right?

Page 79

Roar
No
He’s one of your kind isn’t he?

Page 80

No
She’s nothing like me
Chapter end

I was able to translate one or two small things on my own, so that was nice

This was a funny chapter for all sorts of reasons, one of my fav so far. One wonders what was going on inside Dino’s head in the you-know-what… Kaede seemed so sure there was no interest

Screenshots

What do u think his experience of media is. Had he seen movies before Kaede? Was there TV where he came from? We may never know…

I’ve tried to hold a stack sideways like this and I’m sure some of you have too and can therefore corroborate that what he’s doing here is very impressive.

:(((

This face specifically is killing me so bad. What’s going on in there? Fascination? Revelation? Will this be on his mind for some time now? It’s like he got stun-locked.

This is definitely the best non-Dino expression we’ve gotten so far. Just pure panic. I’ve been there bro…

Translation
P73

Kaede: “Good, it’s still open”
“Let’s each rent one we like”

P74

Kaede: “No, I said just one!!”
“Also, don’t pick a TV show”

P75

Kaede: “You’re not into this stuff, right?”
“Oh, look, isn’t that actress cute!?”

P76

Kaede: “Hm? It’s Shouta”
Shouta: “Oh, Kaede…”
Huh!? Kaede!? Whuh!? Why are you here!?
Kaede: “Ah, my bad, my bad, I’ll leave”
“Let’s go, let’s go”
Shouta: “…what was that”

P77

Kaede: “…Oh”
“Nice, I’ll take this”
Employee: “Hm? This?”
Kaede: “Did you pick too?”

P78

Kaede: “Hey, this is scary, is that okay? It’s like, people coming out of wells?”
“Hmmmm”
“Okay!”
“It’s a double-feature!!” (lit: watching two movies in one breath)
“We can start with mine”

P79

Kaede: “No, that’s like, your buddy”

P80

Kaede: “Nope, not at all

In this chapter, they’re visiting Japanese bookstore (and video rental) chain Tsutaya.

There’s Aibou again. Though when he was directed to pick a movie, I’m surprised he didn’t go for one of the Aibou movies. There’s been six of them, after all.

Kaede’s final section looks like Jurassic Park, or perhaps one of its sequels. Dino’s is The Ring.

Never posted last week (oops) but did read it! Here we go, week 10! This was one of my favorite chapters for sure!

Some of my favorite panels

Loving 楓’s vibe this chapter

Well, well, now look who we have here!

The uncomfortable dudes are cracking me up, especially the one on the right.

Wasn’t expecting this character! Ha! Also the 18+ covers are hilarious

Pure chaos

Lot of stress in this chapter, eh?

And then a few things I was unsure of:

p73, 3rd panel | ずつ

1本ずつ
好きなの
借りよー

At first I translated this as “We can rent [a movie] we like one at a time”, but given the ending I guess this means “one movie each”. Would “one at a time” even work as a translation in another context?

p74, 2nd panel | ば

ダメ
1本だけ
だってば!!

“No good! I said one movie only!” — I assume ば is some kind of emphasis here? Does it add any meaning??

p76, 3rd panel | 悪い悪い

あー
悪い悪い
出てくから

“Ah, bad (???). We’re leaving though.” I guess??? I don’t really understand how the 悪い悪い bit functions here

Also, I totally missed the parallel structure of the last two pages at first, thinking that 全然違うし meant something like “no this movie’s totally different (and is actually scary)”. Now I totally see that Dino is suggesting she’s like the Ringu woman and Kaede’s saying that she’s totally different from that woman.. Much funnier, hah!

It’s ってば, which is along the lines of “… like I told you already” in an annoyed tone.

“Sorry, my bad” sort of thing.

Hehe fun chapter. Poor 翔太…

Would be a whole different sort of manga if kaede and dino were more like their respective film character choices.

Fave panels

Beautiful symmetry.

New words & tricky bits
 • p78 2本一気見 - new phrase, I like it, makes intuitive sense
 • p76 悪い悪い出てくから - I didn’t really get this but now understand - think it was a combo of the shortening of 出ていく and the double 悪い which threw me a bit. Thanks for the explanations above!

I’m curious what others think, but your interpretation is correct.
I think “one at a time” could work in another context?? But I think ずつ for “each” seems much more natural and common. I also noticed that online and on Jisho there are more example sentences for the “each” definition than the “one at a time” definition.

This is speculative on my part but I would guess that if, say, she was alone in the store and talking to herself, it could translate as “one at a time” because there’s not really another way to distribute the “each” meaning of ずつ except across visits like that.

This chapter was very amusing! What impresses me is that I can just show my wife this manga’s chapters and she can get a laugh out of it without understanding any Japanese.

Typing out my thoughts helps to absorb the words a bit more. I have used above translations for a better sense check as some of mine were just a guess, or after checking above, not quite right.

And a stupid question, where do I find the “blur text” option…?

Title

なにをかりよかな / What should I borrow

p73

よかった / I am glad
まだあいてた / It is still open
1ぽんずつすきなのかりょ / I will borrow one that I like

p74

ダメ1本だけだってば / No! borrow 1 only

あとさあ / and also

どらまじやなくてえいがにしなじょ/ Don’t choose a drama, lets borrow a movie

p75

きょうみないでしょ / You are not interested, are you

みてあのじょゆうかわいくない / Look at that actress, isn t she cute

p76

わるいわるいでてくから my bad my bad, I will go out now

いこいこ / lets go

なんだよ / What the heck

p77

いいじゃん / This is fine, isnt it

これにしょ / I choose this

…決めた / Dino has also decided

p78

これこわいやつじょやんいいの / This is a scary movie, right- Is this okay
ふーん - Hmm
よっしゃ / Alright

えいが2ほんいつきみ / I assume it means lets watch 2 movies, but I don’t understand the kimi part…

あたしのやつからでいいよね / it is okaz to start with mine, right

p79

いや、なかまじゃん / not your friend, is he

p80

ぜんぜんちがうし / She is totally different

Do I understand correctly that やつ can be used for “thing”?
Is 悪い悪い colloquial?

I feel like I have to start an Anki deck or something to write down vocabulary… A new skill I have to learn… ^^”

It’s in the + menu in the reply window, down at the bottom. It’s actually called blur spoiler:

You can also use tags if you’re using the markdown editor like so:
text here
. To use the markdown editor the M↓ button needs to be selected in the upper left of the posting window (I’m pretty sure the A, which is the wysiwyg editor, is selected by default).

Yep! It’s used in casual speech for thing or person (close to “guy” in English). It can be rude, depending on the situation (as with a lot of colloquial speech), but isn’t that rude by default.

Both 悪い and 悪い悪い are pretty casual ways to say “sorry” (“my bad” is a good translation a lot of the time).

It is nice to have material that’s fun even without words!!

Page 78

This one is a small っ, so it’s a whole word: 一気見 (いっきみ) meaning to binge watch

i’m noticing i confuse まだ and また frequently! i was ready to accept a whole implied backstory about how this location had closed for a while…

the Shouta encounter!! hiLARious. also loved the parallel structure on the last two pages!

this chapter was smooth sailings compared to my experience reading the prior week’s selection. (and much nicer in contrast since the last chapter made me kind of sad!).

fun new word

一気見する is definitely going to come in handy :writing_hand:

mini storytime re: last panel

funnily enough i just saw “the ring” in theatres last friday! not my first viewing, but still scary! now i have the goal of seeing “ringu” in theatres since i’m also a big fan of the original.

what’s funny is jurassic park scares me more…

Definitely a quick read this week.

Page 73

何を借りようかな I wonder what I should borrow.
よかったーまだ開いてたー Great, it’s still open.
1本ずつ好きなの借好りよー We should borrow the ones we like, one each (originally I said one at a time, but I think its actually one for each of them).

Page 74

ダメ 1本だけだってば!! No, I already told you, just one!
あとさぁ ???
ドラマ じゃなくて映画にしなよ Not a drama, but choose a movie. Or, please pick a movie that’s not a drama. (I think this is gyaru speak for にする + なさい)

Oh geez, I’ve got kids around while I’m reading this.

Page 75

未興味ないでしょ I don’t think there’s anything interesting here…
あ, 可かあ見愛のてよゆうじ憂!! ない可愛く
見て、あの女優可愛くない Look, that female actress (adult film star?) is cute isn’t she? (man look at that guy)

She’s pretty chill about this whole thing.

Page 76

ん? 翔太じゃん Hm? Isn’t that Shouta?
おーーー 楓 Oh… Kaede…
えっ!? 楓!? はっ!? なんで!!? Eh? Kaede!? Huh!? Why!?
あー 悪い悪い出てくから Ah, sorry sorry, I’m leaving (I didn’t get this one at first, forgot that 悪い could mean sorry and then 出る can mean a hundred things. I thought maybe he’d been “exposed” as a bad bad boy)
行こ 行こ Let’s go, let’s go.
なんだよー What the frick…

Dino’s hands look too human like, creepy

Page 77

いいじゃん It’s good, isn’t it.
これにしよ I’ll pick this.
え? これ? Eh? This one?
恐竜も決めた? Dino choose something too?

Wonder if there’s any reason it uses 観 instead of 見.

Page 78

えーこれ怖いやつじゃんいいの? Um, isn’t this a scary one? Is it okay?
井戸から人が出てくるんだよ? Don’t people (doesn’t a person) come out of the well?
ふーん Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

よっしゃー Alrighty!
映画2本 一気観 ~!! Time to binge watch these two movies! (Seems right, いっき, all at once, then there’s 観る, but incomplete, and 二本 is counter for two movies)
アタシのやつからでいいよね - We can watch mine first (? not sure, probably から is from like “start from”, and でいい is probably でもいい)

Amazing

Page 79

いや、仲間じゃん No, isn’t he one of your fellows/a fellow dinosaur? (man 仲間 doesn’t translate to English super well)

Amazing-er

Page 80

No, it’s a totally different thing! (Oh, I get it. Scary dino, scary person, maybe Dino’s like “see, just like my movie” and she’s like “nuh, uh”)

Only one new word this week, 一気見. With the odd kanji choice I didn’t even realize it was a work, so I had to deduce its meaning.

It’s actually just a shortened form of なさい. From Bunpro:

なさい may be shortened further to な, which becomes an even more casual form that is used most frequently toward peers.

Not specifically gyaru, but definitely casual.

Page 78

Yup, you got it! It’s just でいい, the いい literally meaning it’s “good” to start with hers. Like “It’s okay to start from mine right!” But she’s not actually asking for Dino’s opinion lol, more of a statement

Page 80

Ha! Maybe that one just needs the good ol’ fan-sub treatment

“No, isn’t he one of your nakama* dinosaurs?”
*Nakama means companion/fellow

:joy:

Oh, I know all about masu stem + な as a short form of なさい, there’s a character in the FF2 club currently who uses it every other sentence. It really stands out as part of her speech pattern. Maybe she’s a historic gyaru.

I was just joyfully pointing out that of course gyaru talks like that. If there’s a form of super casual slang, she’ll use it.

Excellent. The anime fan’s creedo: If it can’t be translated LITERALLY, don’t translate it at all! Otherwise, you’re shitting on an entire culture!!!
