Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I’m hoping anyone who was concerned with sempai’s last chapter being a throwaway is now converted. She’s a recurring character and I really like her

Hmmm I feel like this chapter would have been more fitting a few months ago. Oh well, here are my translation attempts.

Ah, is she your Senpai?
Please give Kaede a stern scolding!
Y-yes
He’s an idiot

Page 87

Were you and Shouta close?
No, not really
I just happened to run into him and Dino in front of the station
Oden? I’ll give you some
One thing led to another and they started drinking
Are they on good terms?
I have no idea
Only egg and radish?! That’s too basic!
And you call yourself a dinosaur
Where are they drinking?

Eh?
Me too?
Yup
Because…
Isn’t that more of a chaos?
I guess that’s true

Had a couple of recently learned kanji in this chapter, so that was nice ^^

Is Kaede scanning her own nametag at the bottom of page 83? Maybe that’s how she clocks on. Or logs in to the register. (Any experts in kombini POS systems around here? :face_with_tongue:)

Page 87, it amuses me that Shota also judges Dino’s oden tastes as 普通

Not konbini specifically, but I have seen people do that at POS systems before checking me out places, so I think your guess is right.

Some responses.

“Was I overly familiar?”

The previous bubble ends in って, which marks it as a quotation. In this bubble, sempai is clarifying who she’s quoting. So it’s like “the manager said”.

Page 84

Ya skipped page 84. :face_with_tongue:

Page 86

More “please touch the age confirmation [button]”. They look somewhat like this:

Page 89

What typo? Looks fine to me. (Also, same as what?)

Weh, I have no clue why my messages for page 84 disappeared.

Well the only large thing I remarked on was how it seemed that ありがと was mispelled, instead saying あいがと

Nah, that’s definitely a り. In many fonts - including handwritten - it’s split into two strokes. You can tell the difference from い because the right-hand stroke is longer than the left one.

Late today because of reasons, but this was a fun chapter. I love when characters that have been separated so far get thrown together and I like watching the dynamics that emerge, and now I’m excited for Kaede’s Senpai to get to know everyone else more, supposing that’s what’s coming…

Screenshots

She’s really the sweetest Senpai, always so friendly and nice to Kaede even tho she could pull seniority and be a hardass any time she wants.

Once again: Kaede is a cute and pretty gyaru. that’s all.

metal gear solid alert sound

face that compels you to forgive all transgressions  he could have killed someone and kaede would be like DINO WHAT DID YOU DO and he’d look at her like that and she’d be like well i’m sure u had ur reasons

I like how visually, Dino’s taken position here as the party master. You have the host’s okay to join the party. It may be your own apartment, Kaede, but don’t forget who’s really in charge… (this is cat energy)

P87

Kaede: “Were you always close with Shouta?”

Senpai: “Huh?

Kaede: “Yup. Besides…
That would be more chaos, right?”
Senpai: “…It sure would be”

Hooray, the best part of my weekend! This chapter started off slowly in terms of reading, but I quickly picked up pace and finished pretty smoothly. Daily reading is paying off!

Found a few new grammatical structures like ~た + ことにする. I think what’s holding me back is a lack of understanding of the passive tense, which I’ve just been kind of winging until I get to the proper grammar lesson for it.

Some of my favorite details

Iconic holiday retail shot. I even cropped out the panels to the left because I like this one so much

楓’s complaining face is so good!

Perfect panel, no notes.

The arguing over おでん subplot is premium

And I know this is so obvious, but can we stop for a moment to appreciate how fantastic 恐竜’s outfit is?!?

And, a few questions I had:

p83, panel 1 - だった

今日シフト
一緒だったんだ!

I’ve got this as “Our shift was together today!”, but why is this in the past tense? Is it some kind of implied usage of shift, like “our shift was scheduled”, perhaps?

p84, panel 3 - わけにはいかない

でもアタシだけ
着ないわけには
いかないし!!

This one’s got me a little confused. わけ seems to be for stating a reason, so roughly I have this broken down to:

But // only I // reason to not wear // doesn’t go // (this statement is a reason)

I’m guessing いかない functions in the same way that negative + てはいけない

Okay, I found the grammar point for わけにはいかない, hah. So this is one of those double negative points, right? So, “But I’m only wearing it because I have no choice!” or something of the like?

Agreed! I love how 先パイ goes from judgy when she first sees the crew to like “hey they’re cool, I could hang” when 楓 invites her!

Excited to see how the friend group dynamic changes. Dino seems to be connecting worlds, hah!

p84, panel 3 - わけにはいかない

So the way I interpreted this one was:
[but [i only [not wear]] [possibility can’t go]]
translating it a little:
[but [only me not wearing] [isn’t possible]]
so:
“I can’t be the only one not wearing it”

i.e. the two main halves are “アタシだけ
着ない”, i.e. “only I don’t wear” and “わけには
いかない” which in this usage I would interpret as describing a kind of (im)possibility (sorta like わけがない), surrounded by でも and し

Which is to say that I’m pretty sure this is a double negative, yes, but one where it’s important that the first negative is about Kaede being the only one not wearing the costume, and the second negative being that that isn’t a possibility (emotionally, even if it’s logically possible)

I think that Japanese doesn’t use past and present tense as strictly English does. I can’t exactly tell you why it was used this way, just that sometimes past/present get used in places your English brain will object, but its perfectly good Japanese.

Just linking the Bunpro grammar point for anyone else with this same question.

p84, panel 3 - わけにはいかない

Ohhhh, yeah I see now! I was wondering why the だけ was after アタシ and not elsewhere, but my interpretation was incorrect. Thank you!

Yeah, that’s fair and makes sense to me. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something!

Thank you; I need to start linking grammar points also.

Ah the embarrassment of being seen at work by your friends… been there.

Best panels

Such a contrast.

You can tell they’ve had a few the first time you see them!

How can you be angry at this face

Tricky bits for me

I wasn’t really sure whether Kaede knew the girl that came in until the end when she called her a friend to senpai. Was I just being a bit thick and supposed to recognise her from the prev chapter where she visited? The アンタ used on page 87 was v familiar but couldn’t tell at the time if that was just gal being gal.

Page 83 馴れ馴れしかった - explanations above make sense! Was struggling to find this in my dictionary for some reason.

Pg 87 中良かった - is there an implication in this question of her being… close with shouta?

Yah, it’s her friend Yamada. First showed up in chapter 3.

Gotta learn to recognise those conjugations. :slightly_smiling_face:

Not entirely sure what you’re implying with that pause before “close”, but they seem to be getting on well together.

Yeah I was assuming they were two separate words and 馴れしい on its own doesn’t come up with anything useful!

Sorry my comment might have been too oblique - was wondering if there was an implication of them being romantically close in Kaede’s Q.

ope, is it 山田? I totally missed that if so… That makes way more sense. Based on the conversation, I misinterpreted it like she ran into 翔太 at the station for the first time and somehow was down to hang out at a rando woman and her dino’s apartment? hahahahaha

Exactly - same for me until the end when she’s talking to senpai! Makes me feel better not being the only one

Took me a bit as well! It’s been awhile since we had a photo shoot with 山田!
