Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

This chapter had like, as much text as the last three put together, right. My goodness. But so much fun! I feel like there were a lot of idioms to look up as well, it made for a real challenge.

It’s cute how the senpai is intimidated by kaede, considering what we’ve seen of her so far. Like she’s really just a sweet and silly girl but obviously, anyone who puts that much effort into their appearance is gonna be a little intimidating.

I’m also glad kaede loves food so much because me too. I think girls should be allowed to enjoy mounds of delicious croquettes and whatever else. And it made the senpai’s parents so happy!!

Fav Panels

do u think this is the hardest she’s ever studied in her life? look at the focus in those eyes…

surprised pikachu kaede face, could make an emoji out of this

this is so cute, she’s trying so hard. yes kaede. herbivores and carnivores. ur doing so good!! we’re all very proud of u

nothing to say this is just an incredible pose. she’s t-rexing

I’m not sure if i read this quite right but this is giving “let’s humour the elder trying to use young ppl jargon” and it’s soooo funny and sweet if u think about it. she’s really perceptive when it comes down to it

i love how she’s charming and charismatic enough that she can evince this reaction from ppl who don’t actually owe her anything. like yeah u let kaede-chan down. how’s it feel. do better next time.

Translation
P53

Senpai: My (junior) gyaru coworker is standing around and reading in the middle of her shift
Technically, as her senior, I should reprimand her
No, gyarus are scary!
Well, there isn’t much to do right now, and there aren’t any customers, so it’s fine, right?
What is that she’s reading anyway!?

P54

Kaede: “Senpai”
Senpai: “What!?”
Kaede: “Will you teach me about dinosaurs?”
Senpai: “Dinosaurs!? Huh? I don’t know about them!”
Kaede: “But go to university, so, you’re like, smart, right?”
Senpai: “Well… it’s not like I’m particularly studying dinosaurs at university…”
Kaede: “Ahaha! Right, funny”
Senpai: Why’s she laughing!?

P55

Kaede: “What are dinosaurs supposed to eat?”
Senpai: “I think it depends on if they’re herbivores or carnivores…”
Kaede: “OH! YEAH! THERE’S HERBIVORES AND CARNIVORES”
“SEE, I KNEW YOU WERE SMART~”
“But, like, can you tell which one they are by how they look?”
Senpai: “Uhh, I don’t know if you can tell one way or another”

P56

Kaede: “Oh”
“Well, which kind do you think that one is?”
Senpai: “Whoa, a dinosaur…”
Kaede: “Which do you think it is?”
Senpai: “I’m not sure… but if I looked at the picture book I have at home I might be able to tell”
Kaede: “OH? You have a picture book at home?”
Senpai: “…yeah, since I live with my parents”
Kaede: “NO WAY!!”
“In that case, can I come to your place after work?”
Senpai: “Huhhh!?”
So,

P57

Senpai: My gyaru coworker is in my home
Kaede: “Whoaaaa, these croquettes look good!”
Mother: “Help yourself, don’t be shy. Though I don’t know if you’ll like them…”
Kaede: “Yes ma’am~ thank you!”
“Eh-wait”
“This is really good”
Mother: “Oh, you’re just saying that”
Kaede: “Huh? No, it’s really good, it’s like I’m at a restaurant.”
“Senpai, this is amazing, your place is awesome!”

P58

Father: “Kaede-chan, eat as much as you want of whatever you like”
Mother: “Kaede-chan, your eyes are so big… I’m envious.”
Kaede: “I’m having so much” (?)
Senpai: They suddenly opened up…
Parent: “The dinner table’s lively today, isn’t it…”
Kaede (?): “That makes it sound like it’s usually subdued”
Parent: “Oh? Does it?”
Parent: “Well, Kaede-chan, our daughter doesn’t usually talk much”
Kaede: “Seriously? Though, she kinda gives that feeling”
Parent: “That’s a rather harsh thing to say, Kaede-chan”
Kaede: “Ah, may I have seconds?”
Parents: “Of course!”
Father: “I made this nimono [boiled dish] myself. How is it? Pretty awesome, right?”
Kaede: “Yup, it goes really well with the rice”
Senpai: “…”
“Dad! Where was the dinosaur picture book?”
Father: “Dinosaur picture book?”
Kaede: “Oh, right”

P59

Senpai: “Well?”
Kaede: “Nope, he’s not in here!”
Senpai: “Sorry…”

P60

Kaede: “Thank you for having me~”
Mother: “Kaede-chan, come over to eat again sometime, okay?”
Kaede: “Yes ma’am”
Mother (or Father): “I’ll prepare a lot of food!”
Kaede: “Yes ma’am”
Senpai: “You couldn’t find anything out about the dinosaur in the end, huh?”
Kaede: “Haha, for real”
“But, well, it’s fine”
“Because I got to bond with you today”
Senpai: “…mhm”
I got closer to my gyaru coworker

I really enjoyed this! Loved seeing the 先輩 / 後輩 relationship flipped a little - I can definitely relate to that feeling when someone very charismatic is around. And the parents… hilarious. Seems like they were intimidated too to begin with. But complimenting someone’s cooking is a sure fire way to get in their good books!

Tricky bits

I didnt really grasp what was going on in the middle of p58 until reading @ghelgheli ‘s helpful translation. I was taking 明るい and 暗い much more literally and thought they were talking about the weather or something!

Yeesh there are quite the amount of words! I’m definitely splitting this up, no way I’m doing all of this in one day.

Page 53

Chapter 6 Walking the Path
My Gyaru coworker at my part time job
Is browsing magazines while on the clock
As her Senpai I guess
I should warn her
Gyaru are scary!
Well, it’s slow and there are no customers around, maybe it’s fine?
What is she even reading?

Page 54

Senpai (Didn’t need a translator for that one :P)
What!?
Could you tell me about Dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs!?
Eh? I don’t know about them?
But Senpai is a college student right? Aren’t you smart?
No it’s not like I’m studying Dinosaurs or anything
Ahaha, oh okay, that’s funny!
Why is that funny?

Page 55

I wonder what the correct thing for a dino to eat is?
I think it depends on if it eats plants or meat.
Ah!
That’s right! There are meat eaters and plant eaters!
Senpai you’re actually smart aren’t you?
About that
Can you tell what they eat by looking at them?
Um
You can tell but you also can’t

Page 56

Ah
Then which one do you think that guy is?
Is that a dinosaur…
Which one do you think it is?
I don’t know, if I look at the dictionary I have at home though I might be able to tell
Eh? You have a dictionary at home?
I do. I’m living at my parent’s house.
Woah!
Well then, when work is over
Can I got to Senpai’s house?
Eeeeeeeeh?!?
Later (It’s hard to find proper translation for one hiragana! So this is a guess.)

Alright, that’s it for today.

On page 53, Kaede is reading Graphic Science Magazine Newton. (According to Google results, this was also published in Australia by Australian Geographic, under licence, though the article mentioning that is from 2000, so possibly it’s not any more. The first issue even had dinosaurs on the front cover, though not the same dinosaurs.)

Page 59, 恐竜図鑑 are commonplace enough that I couldn’t really hope for certainty in identifying this book, though I do notice that this book has a t-rex on the front cover in the same position as the one depicted, and the words 新版 near the top-left corner.

My favourite joke this week: “Do you think you could tell a carnivore from a herbivore by sight? How about that one randomly passing by?”

My gyaru coworker is at my house
Whoa! Those croquettes look delicious!
Please eat as much as you like
I’m not sure if you’ll like it though…
Yes! Itadakimasu! (I guess the english equivalent is something like, thank you for the meal?)
Slurp
Hm hold on
This is really delicious!
No way, you’re exaggerating (Doesn’t 大けさ mean size? Is it that kaede’s compliment has too much size or something?)
Huh?
This is like what they serve at restaurants
Senpai’s house is so amazing!

Page 58

Kaedesan, please eat however much of what you enjoy
Kaedechan you have such big eyes, I’m jealous
It’s because I use makeup
Her heart was opened…
Today the diner table is lively
Doesn’t that make it sound like it’s gloomy here?
Hm? Is that so?
But you know Kaede-chan this person doesn’t really talk much
Really? I can see that
You some some pretty harsh things Kaede!
Ah
May I have some more rice?
Of course!
This simmered dish, I was the one who made it
What do you think? Is it properly amazing?
Yeah! It really makes you want to keep eating rice!

Dad! Where do you keep that dinosaur dictionary?
Dinosaur dictionary?
Ah thats right

Page 59

Flip
How is it?
The dinosaur isn’t here!
Sorry…

Page 60

I am an intruder (???)
Kaede-san please make sure to come again
Yes
I’ll make sure to prepare plenty of rice for you!
Yes
In the end we didn’t find out anything about dinosaurs, huh?
Haha for real
But still
It’s fine
I was able to get closer to Senpai today

Yup
Part time Gyaru
Grows closer
Chapter 6 end

There were so many words with this chapter. But also I was able to recognize a couple of words, so that was nice :3

There’s not really a one to one translation here since this isn’t really a custom that English speakers have. But yeah, it’s the closest to saying grace before meals, and thank you for the meal is often how I see this translated.

大きさ is largeness. 大げさ is exaggeration (note that you wrote 大さ, which is maybe what confused you there).

お邪魔しました is another set phrase. A direct translation is something like “[sorry for] being a nuisance/burden”, but お邪魔します/お邪魔しました are almost always said when entering and then leaving someone’s house, and it’s best translated as something like “thank you for having me here”

wow いつも通りにすごくいい感じじゃん、この漫画(まんが)!!

i loved this chapter!! the way Kaede’s mannerisms were totally foreign to 先輩’s parents at the beginning but the dad at the end was starting to catch on?? :face_holding_back_tears:

What a fun chapter, despite there being only one Dino appearance!!! (perfect timing though, right?) I loved the contrast between 楓 and 先パイの両親 and the world of difference between their language. No wonder it’s been taking me so long to read some of these chapters  Also wasn’t really expecting to see 図鑑 outside of Pokemon, hah!

A few obligatory details I noticed

I love 先パイ’s nervous speech font:

Huge fan of FUDDG magazine, tbh:

This is me every time I’ve been eaten a homecooked meal at a friend’s:

Kinda felt bad for 先パイ here… too ふつー to entertain her parents at dinner, dang…

Hope we have more development from this pairing in future chapters!

I’ll have to go back and flip through when I have time, but there was really only a few parts that gave me much trouble.

p55 - last panel - ような

わかるような
わからない
ような

It’d probably make more sense if I had a better understanding of what ような means, but it feels like there’s something more going on with the parallel structure of that statement… Is it like “I might understand, I might not”?

p57 - second to last panel - 店じゃん

ちょう
ウマいし
もう
店じゃん
コレ

This seems to be something like “Because it’s super delicious” (し denotes a reason) and then.. もう店じゃん seems to be modifying これ, so something like “it’s not even from a shop!” maybe?

I think you got this one! At least, that’s how I’m parsing this sentence. I think よう here is kinda “like” or “in such a way”? And then な makes the most sense to me as the sentence ender when you’re half-talking to yourself about stuff you’re not certain of (as opposed to the negative command haha)

じゃん in 楓の弁 is usually more like “isn’t it?” as short for じゃないか, so I actually think she’s saying “this is from a shop, isn’t it?” which sets up the next couple panels better to me: she’s surprised [at how good 先パイの両親are at cooking] but the parents initially kinda misinterpret that as her not wanting to eat?

This chapter has been a killer. Fun, but rock hard.

I just noped out of it last night, but broke it down a bit at lunch today and it’s started to make a bit more sense.

Favorite joke this week

p 58

Senpai’s dad trying to adapt to gyaru-speak with ちゃんとヤバい and his daughter’s reaction to that

Oh boy this was a hard one. I was doing pretty ok until they went to the house
Page 57 was kind of ok, but 58 was definitely a struggle (the 今日は食卓… panel was very hard). Still, I understood the chapter without having to do too many lookups (I realized that I didn’t know the kanjis for 先輩 and 後輩 :face_with_peeking_eye:), and I solved most of my questions by reading the thread.

I still have a few questions left.

Page 57

I’m still confused about もう店じゃんコレ. I’m not really sure what she’s trying to say. I’ve seen both “From the store”, and “like in a restaurant”. I feel the second fits more than the first, but I don’t know where it comes from. Probably something that can’t directly translate to english, or I’m just being too literal with the transaltion

Page 58

I actually don’t know what 好きなもの means here. Yomi says that 好きなだけ is “all you want (as in, as much food as you want)”, but is it like “eat as much as you want of the things you liked”? (like, the food she liked)

pg 57

So in Japan, they have little booth like stores that sell stuff like croquettes, and you can also get them in places like convenience stores. None of those places are restaurants, so I think this is why Kaede is saying 店 and not レストラン. In a translation, either works, but since I don’t have shops like that here, I’d probably also translate it to restaurant.

Not sure if you had problems with the grammar other than that.. let me know if you do though!

pg 58

I actually think this is a straightforward usage of もの and not a grammar point, with もの just meaning thing. You’re right about the next 好きなだけ

Butcher’s shops sell croquettes in Japan.

Page 57 Response

Yes, the meaning for 店 is probably more accurate to store here.
As for the meaning of the sentence though. I believe the croquettes were made by the mom of the family. But Kaede is saying they’re so good they could be from a professional store. Using a non-literal translation you could say “These are so good! They’re store-made level!”
That understanding of the sentence also makes sense with what the mom said in the line before:「いやいや大げさだって」, so I think she’s being polite/humble about her home cooking

This manga isn’t the only one that uses that phrasing. Calling something delicious by comparing it to a store version seems to be a common compliment :head_shaking_vertically: That or saying 「これ売れる」as a compliment

Cool! Do we say this when leaving a restaurant, bar, cafe too? Or only a house?
