Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

:fire: Participation

Will you be reading along with us this week?
  • I’m reading along
  • I’m still reading but haven’t reached this point yet
  • I’ve already read this previously, but I’m here for the discussion
  • I’m reading this after the book club has finished
  • I’ve stopped reading this book

This felt like the chapter of many faces. And we didn’t even get any resolution in the end!

Fav Panels

I call this one The Agony and The Agony

and The Pain

and The Tickling

and The Indignation

if you think about it this was just the torture dino episode. at least we got this cute face:

…but was it worth it?

Also I was struck by how pretty she is with her eyeliner in this panel:

We don’t really see her up close like this so I was like whoa. I almost forgot you were a gyaru for a second.

Translation-wise, I felt kinda wobbly in a few places this week…

Translation
P63

“Hello?”
“Yeah, haha, no way.”
“So, what?”
“Huh? A manga? I borrowed it?”
“Hold on, I’ll look.”
“Oh, found it, found it.”

P64

“Oh, did I step on it again? I didn’t notice~”
“Your tail kinda gets in the way, huh?”
“What if you wrapped it around your body?”
“Oh, that’s great.”

P65

“Just make a living out of that”
“You could make it big.” (?)
“OW”

P66

“Okay, this should be fine.”
“Hm?”
Yo!!
That’s hilarious!!
“Wow~”
“You look like a different dinosaur”
“Wanna check yourself out in a mirror?”
“Hm?”
Oh. Crap. It’s too tight on your neck.

P67

“Hm…”
“Oh”
“How about if instead I made your tail stand out more?” (lit. wouldn’t it be good if)
“Then, I wouldn’t step on it anymore”
“Okay”

P68

“How is it!?”
“Good, right?”
“Don’t just ignore me and walk off to the bath!!” (lit: “Uh, don’t just go and put it in the bath without a reaction!!”)

P69

“Come on~”
“And I wanted to take a picture~”
“…”
“Hey…”

P70

“A lizard’s tail grows back if it’s cut off, right?”

Great translation!!

One part to add nuance to

Page 68 Response

Here I think the line 「ノーリアクションで風呂に落としに行かな!!」might also be translated as “Don’t just ignore me (no reaction) and go to the bath to wipe it off!!”

The verb 落とす has lots of meanings, but one is “to clean off (dirt, makeup, paint, etc.), to remove (e.g. stains or facial hair)”

Ohh this is very helpful thank u ^^ that flows a lot better and more sensibly

Whew, this is much better than last week, maybe not even a third of the words that the last chapter had.

Page 63

Chapter 7 To stop a tail
Hello (I know what Moshi Moshi means from a very odd source)
Yup, haha, you’re wrong
What is it?
Eh? Cartoon?
Borrow was it? (You wanted to borrow it?)
Wait a moment
I’ll try looking for it
Crunch
Ah
Found it found it

Page 64

Eh did I step on it?
I didn’t notice
Your tail
Isn’t it in the way?
Can’t you wrap it around your body?

Eh
Good isn’t it?

Page 65

Just live your life like this from now on
I’m sure you’ll be popular!
Hurray
Slap
Ouch

Page 66

Yes, this is genius (No translator on this, just pure hoping my understanding of Japanese is correct)
Eh?
Dangerous!!
Too much!!
Incredible
It looks like a different dinosaur
Why don’t you try looking in the mirror?
…Hm?
AAAH
OH NO IT’S CHOKING HIM

Page 67

Hm
Ah
Wouldn’t it be better if we make it stand out?
That way I won’t step on it anymore
Alright
Scribble

Page 68

Tail
There!?
Is that good?
Ah!
Don’t just go into the bath without giving me a reaction!!

Page 69 (nice)

What the heck
And I wanted to take a picture too

Hey…

Page 70

You know a lizard’s tail
Grows back even after it’s cut

Kaede seems very brutal in this chapter

Please tell me that source is Nyan Neko Sugar Girls

It’s from this actually

DANG, I thought it would be funny if I was thinking of the same thing

That’s awesome tho hahaha

恐竜: light work, ノーリアクション

Well, I think we’ve found the true villain of this manga. Imagine stepping on your cat’s tail, and blaming the cat for it.

Aah, this was so much nicer than last week! Although i will say, i did panic on the first read through before being a bit systematic and realising i could figure out most of it.

This is def too much above my level, but i was able to figure out what 写真撮りたかったのに meant, so that’s a sad little win for me

Any small bit that you figure out is something that you’ll know next time. As long as you’re having fun you’re not doing it wrong.

I found this week’s chapter so funny (but poor 恐竜)

I’m going to go crazy and try for my first translation attempt:

Page 63

Hi
Yeah, haha you’re wrong
What?
Eh? Manga?
You want to borrow it?
Wait a sec
I’ll try to look for it
ahhhhhh
Found it, I found it

Page 64

Eh, did I step on your tail again?
I didn’t realise
So your tail…
It’s quite annoying isn’t it → (complete side note but this is the thing that made me realise that British English and American English use ‘quite’ in different ways)
Can you wrap it around your body?
Eh, that’s good right

Page 65

Just keep living like that. You’ll become popular → (not sure on that translation)

Page 66

Okay, this is good
Omg lol, crazy → (this is more vibes than literal)
Awesome, you look like a different dinosaur
You want to try looking in the mirror?
Hmm?
OH NO IT’S STRANGLING YOU!!

Page 67

Hmmmm
Ah
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to do the opposite and make your tail stand out
That way it wouldn’t be stepped on → (those last two I get the vibe but not sure the translation is correct)
Alright

Page 68

How’s that?
It’s good isn’t it?
Ah, don’t go clean it off in the bath without giving me a reaction!!

Page 69

wth man, I wanted to take a picture…

hey…

Page 70

Lizard’s tails grow back once it’s cut off right? → (:open_mouth: )

My physical copies have arrived and I finally caught up with the book club! My impression so far: I would not be able to read this without the vocabulary sheet and discussions! Thanks a lot to everyone contributing.

Although it is difficult (or even impossible xD) it is a fun way to learn and immerse in Japanese.

This week’s chapter was a nice break from last chapter’s complexity though!

Happy the club is making this possible for you! Your first few reading attempts are going to be rough, no matter what you do, so I’m glad you’re able get through it with the rest of us

Yes, quite. :slightly_smiling_face:

Been less busy lately so I thought I’d do a full translation this time. Extra easy week, too. Best part was the horror movie focus in on the scissors. No..she wouldn’t… SHE WOULD.

Page 63

Title: The tail.. stop it. (what? Maybe I’ll get it after I read more)

もしもし Hello!
うん Yes…
ハハ Haha!
ちげーよ That’s wrong (weird gyaru version of 違い).
で何? What? (what is this で for?)

え? Eh?
漫画 Manga?
借りてたっけ? Did I borrow it? (I guess っけ is a dialectical way to indicate you forgot something, it was in the last chapter too)

待って Wait.
探してみる I’ll try to find it.

ぐにっ What is this the sound of stepping on a stuffed animal?

あー Aah…
あった あった Found it (literally, “it was it was”, but I guess it can mean “I found it” or “got it”.

Page 64

えー また 踏んじゃった? Ehh… Did I end up stepping on you again?
気づかなかったー I didn’t notice.

しっぽさぁ Your tail, huh…
結構ジャマじゃない? It really gets in the way, doesn’t it. (It’s quite a nuisance?)

体に巻きつけられないの? それ Could it wrap around your body? or Are you not able to wrap it around your body? Probably more like “Why don’t you wrap it around your body” (Don’t know what the hanging それ means, probably just referring to the tail with bad/casual grammar)

え いいじゃん Oh, that’s not so bad.

Page 65

もうそれで生活しなよ Live like that (from now on). (もう is freaking weird, but it can be a nuance of like “Perfect! Now live like that”, or it can be “more, furthermore”, like live like that more/again/into the future. I think.)
人気者になれる You’ll become popular.

ヒュッ Uh sound effects.

びたんっっ More sound effects

Page 66

よし これで 大丈夫 Okay. With this, it’ll be all right.

ん~~? Huh?

ヤバイ!!! ウケる!!! Crap, that’s hilarious!!! (God this slang)

すげー Amaazing.
別の恐竜みたいだよ It’s like you’re another dinosaur.

鏡で見てみ? Try looking with the mirror?
ん? Huh?

あっ Ah!
やばっ 首しまってる Whoa! Your neck is shut/closed up! (Is it やばい again or something else?)

Page 67

ハァ ハァ Panting sounds?
んーーー Hmmm…

あ Ah.
逆にしっぽを目立たせたらいいんじゃね? Inversely (what if instead), would it be good if we made it conspicuous?
そしたら もう 踏まないっしょ If so, I won’t step on it anymore, right?

よし Okay!
(sound effects)

Page 68

どう!? What do you think?
よくない? It’s good ain’t it?

あっ Wha!?
ノーリアクションで 風呂に 落としに行くな!!! Don’t just nonchalantly (showing no reaction) go wash it off in the bath ! (today I learned 落とし is used for washing off makeup, etc)

Page 69

なんだよー What the heck? (if you just say なんだよ by itself, which should be completely meaningless, it instead shows surprise and dismay)
写真 撮りたかったのにー (even though) I wanted to take a picture.

Is she thinking about cutting off his tail with the scissors?

Page 70

Oh crap, she is.

トカゲのしっぽって Speaking of lizard tails…

切れても 復活するよね Even if you cut them, they come back.

couple of quick replies

Yep you’re right! I’ve seen 怖い (怖っ!) get that same treatment, and probably some more adjectives that I can’t think of off the top of my head..

Yeah I don’t actually think it’s bad grammar, but it sorta works like an after the fact clarification. Something like: Could you wrap it around your body? Your tail I mean.

p63 で

Here it’s an introductory “so” to move on from the greetings to the main topic. Or as jisho puts it, it stands for それで

So, what is it (that you are calling me about)?

Very behind with this because of some work travel but managed to zip through it today. Kaede’s mean streak coming out. To be fair though having a big ole dinosaur living in your small apartment would be logistically tricky… She should have suggested hanging laundry off his しっぽ.

That’s a great little win! Celebrate it
