Wanikani Fonts Update

I was hoping to PM you but apparently they disabled PMs on this forum, looks like I’ll have to derail the discussion somewhat. Sorry mods, I hope one message is okay :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s always going to be painful in the beginning, but ultimately do what is natural to you, but in Japanese. You can start with setting your device/browser language to JP everywhere (if you haven’t already), subscribe to a bunch of JP artists/musicians/etc on Twitter and try to read their posts when they come, etc. I always play games in Japanese whenever I can, I think gaming is really powerful for learning because you can learn words simply because they’re coupled with associated pictures/audio/plot. You can also try reading the news from NHK, I feel like it can be a good practice tool (though I personally never liked reading the news, so I couldn’t stick to this either). Ultimately just think what you do every day and try to do it in Japanese, I think it’s the best if it feels like a natural thing you’d do anyway.

Also I think it’s better to start with this as early as possible, I started trying to read everything on Twitter as low as level 10 here and N5 on Bunpro (though that may be actually a bit too early). But it’ll always hurt in the beginning, so it’s just better to start earlier than later anyway.

Is anyone else experiencing dynamic changes when loading the page?
It keeps loading it a certain way and then changing to a different format after the new kanji has been loaded. It’s honestly impossible to do reviews like this, since the character is flashing on the screen every time…
I guess it might be some script I’m using, but not sure if that’s the issue.

Now on my screen you can see some of the individual “strokes” of the character when you couldn’t with the old font

@tofugu-scott: I really appreciate y’all caring about this, even if change can be problematic. It’s too early for me to have a strong opinion either way about the aesthetics/usability, so I’ll give it some time. I’m sure you folks will sort out any issues with time. <3

@shira-segal: In my experience, that tends to happen when the browser takes a bit to load resources: It starts out displaying default typeface either because it hasn’t loaded the new font yet or because it hasn’t loaded the CSS at all (with the latter you’d likely notice other elements on the page changing as the CSS loads as well). Do you get a different result in another browser? I tend to have that sort of thing happen more when the computer is slow (old, and/ or bogged down with my tab habit…)

I really really dislike this change. I want my thin font back

My fonts have also thickened drastically, and my home page looks blurry / deep fried

Another data point. I’m on Windows 10

I did not use the site between pre-update and the font weight patch, but I’m finding reviews extremely difficult with how things are now. Kanji characters especially seem far too thick and many radicals look completely different, which makes them borderline impossible for me to parse. Every change Wanikani makes recently feels designed in a way that completely disregards accessibility, it’s extremely disheartening as someone who is autistic and needs consistency as part of the learning process.

The Hiragana in the answerbox are much harder to read with this.

Edit: Holy hell, i dont even want to continue with the review at this point.
This is the same feeling i got back when i needed new, stronger glasses.

For me, at least on PC, the update makes doing lessons much harder. Whereas the kanji and vocabulary is clearly visible, examples are… weird. I would say it’s like every character is duplicated and slightly offset. Reading like this hurts my eyes. It’s best visible when characters are highlighted

new font is very disappointing
anybody has a way to put back old font?
I want to make a side by side comparison to understand what’s wrong with a new font (both original and bold)

My font has become thicker, not thinner as seems to be the case for almost everyone XD

You are not. I also like the new font better. Not there was anything wrong with the old one.

In the past, I disabled Brave Shield just to get the original thick-enough font. I think it allows Google fonts to be used.

However, I think fonts on Jisho.org look OK, and it never requires disabling Brave Shield. (Though I am not using Brave anymore.)

.japanese_gothic {
	font-family: "Source Han Sans", "源ノ角ゴシック", "Hiragino Sans", "HiraKakuProN-W3", "Hiragino Kaku Gothic ProN W3", "Hiragino Kaku Gothic ProN", "ヒラギノ角ゴ ProN W3", "Noto Sans", "Noto Sans CJK JP", "メイリオ", Meiryo, "游ゴシック", YuGothic, "MS Pゴシック", "MS PGothic", "MS ゴシック", "MS Gothic", sans-serif;
}

Using a single font, regardless of OS, might be good though, but I also think the earlier one is too thin.

Somehow I don’t like English font this time. Changing font-family to sans-serif looks better.

Thank you for having the patience to comply with the insane European regulations. :slightly_smiling_face:

new font style good, I noticed basically instantly that everything was slightly easier on the eyes. ty for that

Just dropping this here. I made a little userstyle to restore the old font in as many important places I could.

It’s looking like the new fonts are showing up differently among users. Mine is crazy thick and mad blurry, including all the English text. It’s like using drunk goggles

I think this has something to do with what kind of fonts people have installed on their PC. If you didn’t have the japanese language pack installed on your PC (to be able to type in japanese) then the default wanikani font for me was always so thin and weird. But as soon as I’d install the japanese language pack on windows, the font changed to be bolder and easier to read. Since the previous font stack was so long, I assume the language pack installed one of those fonts that came earlier in the previous stack, which then took importance over the one it would otherwise default to.

I assume the different experiences of people come from exactly this. Some have the japanese language pack installed, some don’t.

Regarding the english text, could you post a screenshot? I would like to check against mine.
