July 2nd!

I was planning to read Witch Hat Atelier today, but I didnt have time to read until after work, and I’m still a little overtired from travelling so I wanted something simple to read.
So I settled on reading the next chapter of Teasing Master Takagi-san, though thats actually next weeks bookclub chapter!

Been starting off slow as I’m still doing Dawntrail in FFXIV, and read a chaper of Frieren volume 3 both today and yesterday.

Really between Dawntrail launch and this weekend’s wedding, it’s really the 8th that the challenge starts in earnest for me, but I’ll do a bit to keep the streak before then.

  • Finished the chapter of カタログ. I really enjoyed this story, even though it was a pretty basic spooky tale… it is funny how I feel so much more accomplishment from understanding ‘simple’ stories now lol. I guess it’s just the less it interferes with my flow state, the more I enjoy things. The instant lookups from prose with my setup is really nice.

Hey, thanks. I understand the paragraphs when I go through it sentence by sentence using Google and knowledge, but that won’t help me when I do the exam, so I am trying to improve my comprehension quickly.

Home post

I continue to read the grader reader collection from Tadoku on Natively.

This morning I read seven stories: 1. 畳生活, 2. どうぞどうも, 3. かんたん!日本のカレーライス, 4. あんこちゃん ~季節のお菓子~, 5. 菊, 6. TKG, and 7. 広島・宮島に行きましょう.

They varied from levels 0 to 6. I came across a lot of new vocabulary words, most of them being words for food or cooking techniques. Grammatically, nothing new again. The readers were pretty fun to read, as I learned new Japanisms and enjoyed the pictures. (I’m 5 years old again?)

I also continue to work on N4 grammar points in Bunpro. Worked on the させる form the other day, and the chapter also suggested that I look at giving/receiving verbs, so I did. Small achievement in that I finally understand the difference in uses of もらう/くれる better than when I first studied Japanese.

Being continually exposed to Japanese sentences through reading and Anki has made my brain grow a new wrinkle.

Hopefully, the momentum will continue when I start to read more difficult material.

  • 板塀(いたべい) = wooden wall/fence. A kind of 塀(へい)
  • 鰍(かじか)、鯊(はぜ) => two kinds of fishes :fish:
  • 雪原(せつげん) = snow field. Compare 平原(へいげん).
  • 快気祝(かいきいわ)いをする = to celebrate one’s recovery from illness. Compare 根治(こんち)、完治(かんち)、全治(ぜんち)

15.000 characters (!!) from Island :desert_island: today. I was hoping to get to the end of the route I’m currently on, but I had to stop. The story keeps dragging me in. Just one more scene, just one more line, just one more… I had no idea that reading Japanese, studying Japanese, could be this much fun!

July 3rd!

Again I didn’t have time to read until after work, but today I made myself knuckle down and read Witch Hat Atelier, because although it takes me ages to read each chapter, I really love reading it and I don’t want to keep putting it off just because I’m tired!
I need to get a bit more disciplined about reading before work again, but my body clock is still confused from the double whammy of switching timezones, and being back at work after some time off earlier this year! I’ll get there :slight_smile:

Yesterday I mismanaged my time and got too tired to put effort into reading without kanji blurring together. So I’m going to intentionally remind myself that the world doesn’t end if I miss a day (and I can still easily read more days than last challenge), and make up for it by being here now.

I stopped in the middle of my quest last time. Today I finished making the special potion I needed. Then I went and accepted all the side quests. Helped sort some cursed books, made a bouquet of flowers, and had a drinking party in the temple. I think I only have a day or two of real life playing before I finish all the quests? Then there’s all the encyclopedia entries to fill out…
