Type Done today Progress
PMD DX Mt. Faraway 3 dungeons remaining
ふしぎ駄菓子屋 1k characters 1/42k characters

Did Mt. Faraway. In the first half I was feeling unprepared, ate up three reviver seeds and all my oran berries and was considering using my escape orb, …until I stepped on a sticky trap and my escape orb became unusable… I was honestly expecting to die during the boss battle but it ended up being pretty easy. In the latter half of the dungeon I found a lot of reviver seeds and oran berries, and recruited four pokemon, three of which ended up fainting to Ho-oh’s sacred fire, but out of my three main pokemon only one fainted.

And with that, the Mirage Pokemon storyline is finished. That only leaves Silver Trench, Meteor Cave, and Western Cave. These could be considered the hardest dungeons (excluding the level one dungeons) and considering Mt. Faraway gave me so much trouble, I think I need to do some leveling before any attempts.

Then started and read a little bit from ふしぎ駄菓子屋. This is my second book now, and it’s a lot easier than my first one was. There are a lot of unknown words, and I love learning words through mining.

Small reads today. Tomorrow is a holiday so I think I’ll finish this Fushigi Sweet Shop chapter finally.

Day 3!

Was a little unusual because I had some things to work around, but I split my reading into 2 sessions and read almost 22k characters in Chaos;Head! Even that only really took a couple hours of focused reading, probably? I wasn’t able to time it because of interruptions. I’m running back through the VN viewing alternate scenes to start towards other endings, and while the stuff I’m reading is new, its close relation to what I’ve already read makes it particularly easy to read, I think. I didn’t even really mine as many words as I usually prefer to in all these characters, which is pretty new. Generally I have way more mined than this with fewer read.

From what I did mine, here’s a word: 鬱憤 (うっぷん, resentment, pent-up anger, etc)

@Redglare Thanks, I love that video.

Playing oos with a fresh mind made this boss a lot easier. 4th dungeon down, 4th season obtained, and made it into the start of the 5th.

horrible pixel kanji bonus round!!!

I also spent a bit of time cleaning and setting up some new toys today. If I wasn’t already set for playing old japanese games, I definitely am now. That’s a lotta rather text dense play hours right there.

Then just a tiny lil bit of book reading before bed, cleaning and testing carts really took up quite a bit of the day

July 4

I read 9 stories from the Tadoku collection and the first chapter of よつばと! 1

  1. チワワの花すけ~すごい!
Cute story about a cheeky Chihuaha. Learned 留守番, a WK 18 word (sigh). Also the colloquialism こら . I’m sure that will come up again.

  2. いっぱい

  3. ぼくのお父さん
Feelsgoodman.jpg to see WK kanji in the wild - like 白鳥 and be able to recognize, read, and know the meaning.

  4. 彼氏がほしい!
This one right here. 10/10 recommend. Very funny to read this girl’s woes and solutions to it.

  5. 赤い・・・

  6. まだ?
I still have trouble discerning もう from まだ in isolation (without a negative or affirmative verb) so this helped me internalize those.

  7. 夜の空で

  8. Great for onomatopoeia.

  9. ゆきだるま

Concerning よつばと!, well, let’s just say I had an easier time reading it this time than the last time I tried. Still had trouble, especially with colloquial endings to words. Thankfully, I was already familiar with だろう and かな from playing Pokemon. Since this is my last reading for today, I will try a guided reading using the resources from the big discussion thread that was mentioned by someone.

Still, I don’t think my comprehension was too bad. I’m sure that by doing another reading and looking up words at the same time, I’ll be able to grasp those instances of colloquial endings in no time. :slightly_smiling_face:

I thought I’d participate in this, mainly to get through some of my 積読. Moreover, I tend to gravitate towards video games more than books, but tracking my reading progress tends to keep me more motivated (I’m hoping to get to 50 books read since I started learning, by the end of this year at the latest).

I bought a ton of the このすば light novels many moons ago when I was just beginning to read, so thought I’d finish off the volume I had previous read part way through of as some easy reading before reading 鹿の王4.

Something that stresses me out sometimes is the kindle’s “time remaining in book” stat. It’s good for tracking progress, and I remember it helping reassure me that my reading speed was increasing when I was just reading my first few books. But now it just shows me that my speed has pretty much completely plateaued, as any ~300 page novel takes around 10 hours (or more if the language is harder). If I force myself to read faster then I just end up reading without really comprehending.

Today’s reading: よつばと! Vol. 3: Chapter 21. Free-read whole chapter today; tomorrow I will begin close reading with dictionary help.

Day 4!

Read 16k characters of Chaos;Head so far. I’ll probably switch to reading other things later. One nice accomplishment today: I managed to time my reading pretty focused for an hour and I got a little over 10,000 characters in that time! If the material doesn’t trip me up too hard, I’m definitely improving my speed :slightly_smiling_face:

New word: 心神喪失 (しんしんそうしつ, of unsound mind)

  • A quarter of a chapter of カタログ on the train after my daily revision. It’s a running around day in between work, so hopefully I can finish the rest of the chapter today.
  • Strictly speaking (based on my own self-imposed habits) I should read a chapter of ダン飯 today, but I think it’ll be a bit hard today, so I’ll just push out my timeline a bit. Also I actually wanted to finish off this chapter of カタログ…

5th dungeon down, but that took more brainpower than the last few. I may have reached the point where the game is too hard for me to actively listen on the side while I’m playing it  I think I’m more than halfway through at this point, but most of the time it barely feels like I’m playing in japanese. I’ve definitely learned a few words here and there and needed to use it for understanding hints and stuff, but it’s not very meaty. I think my next game will be a more text heavy one.

I put all my games into a spreadsheet last night and pulled data from howlongtobeat, and by those metrics my estimated time to finish all my games in english would be over 500 hours… so I might have to do a game challenge at some point to whittle that jp list down

July 5

Today I read 4 stories:

  1. カラスと水さし ~イソップ物語より~
  2. じゃんけん
  3. 寒い日は「おなべ」
Lots of food vocabulary; was pleased to be able to recognize some of the earlier food/cooking words, like みりん and だし - both words that I came across in stories I read in the past few days.
  4. 入れて

No new grammar concepts that I came across here, but the level of the books has been simple enough that I had no expectations of finding them. It gives me time to go through more Bunpro lessons.

No よつばと! chapter, either. I was determined to finish another book (Pride and Prejudice) of which I only had about 100 pages left. Hopefully, I continue to chip away at the Tadoku series.
