Wasn’t planning to update until I did something more interesting, but I forgot I had a nice milestone coming up!
My 500 day reading streak!
Read:
ARIA the NATURAL (2:18 → 3:54) - finished up the second chapter, I think out of six, but I’d have to check that. I thought I might have hit the route split, but my save file still shows 通常ルート, so maybe not. I made a save point anyways, just in case.
コンビニ人間 - just a couple pages, I reread some of the last ones because I kinda zoomed through them trying to eek out a record month, and I wanted to keep at least a little bit of book/manga reading going during the listening challenge
Listening challenge is already going great so far, at the end of the second day I’m already over 10/100 hours!
Very little time last few days. But now I have 3 days off. I, going to need to work on the reading side of things since I’m now reading 5 manga, 2 books and the intermediate dictionary with various clubs (but am already well behind on the dictionary). I think I can catch up with the books which have both started already. Mostly the manga are fine.
Read more Hotel manga and I found a booklet in it showing off another manga, かわいすぎる人よ!And it seems super sweet. Added that to my want to read list. Maybe I’ll pick it up later this year when I get Hotel volume 5.
Yesterday’s reads. Goosebumps felt easier than fushigi sweet shop, so I read 5 pages. It has a lot more dialogue, so like half of every page is ‘so and so said’ lol. On the other hand, the partial furigana in Goosebumps covers fewer kanji than fushigi sweet shop does, so it expects you to know sliiightly more kanji.
Yesterday’s update since I fell asleep without posting it lol.
Read
3 N5 articles on Watanoc.
1 N4 article on Watanoc
One NHK News Easy Article (I also read the article about volunteer activities in Ishikawa. It was cool because I just learned the kanji for 県 this week.)
2 pages of 気になってる人が男じゃないかった for the BBC.
I had hoped to tackle a lot more reading this weekend, but I woke up to discover my coworker had generously shared his cold with me So we’ll see how much I actually accomplish.
So, today I did read two more chapters from Aryn’s rescue, but I didn’t translate them, as I usually do. I’m not sure if I should count today, but I think I will if I somehow find the time tomorrow to translate them in addition to the regular two chapters.
Super Frog saves Tokyo by Murakami Haruki, 3 pages
The short story by Murakami Haruki kicks asses. You laugh, then you’re embarassed, then you hold your breath, then you’re totally caught by surprise… No wonder I love this author. When I am older, I want to write like him
Again, so so happy to be able to read one of his texts directly in japanese !
Is it a requirement you made to yourself to have to translate the chapters to count them as read ? Because it isn’t necessary if you understood them. You’ve already “translated” them in your head. Translating each one of them is a looot of time you could spend on reading more. Of course, if that’s what you want, forget what I said ^^
Hm, you’re right, the main point is reading, and not translating, after all, it’s called “Read Every Day Challenge”, not “Translate Every Day Challenge” I will still try to translate them tomorrow as well, just to make sure I understood everything correctly
There have been some great matches in the challenge cup group phase when you get that far – look out for the group 10 tiebreaker match and the Lefty/Allyoucaneat group 15 match in particular (both streamed on TheSilverGauntlets, I assume they’ll make it to their YouTube channel eventually).
Tiny 夜カフェ read since I was falling asleep on top of my computer. Today I also studied The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar pp. 97-125 while unsuspending the corresponding sentences from an Anki deck, which will be enough sentences to keep me occupied until the end of next week.
Yeees I finished あなたも殺人犯になれる! today, officially joining the club of those who have read at least one novel in Japanese! I’m super happy, basically because now it means that I can just go on and read some more, it’s not that scary anymore
And I’m already more than halfway on my second one hehe, no time to waste
Already messed up and missed a day yesterday but I’m reading more already because of the challenge so I’ll call it a win
2月1日 Read Real Japanese Essays どう書いても嫌な奴は嫌いな奴 (町田康)pg. 54-65
2月3日 Read Real Japanese Essays「博士の愛した数式」を巡って(小川洋子)pg. 68-93
I enjoyed both of these a lot, and although I didn’t have to rely on the translation pages a lot, it helped to not have to look up the words that I didn’t know. どう書いても嫌な奴は嫌いな奴 was really funny. I’ve read Yoko Ogawa’s “The Memory Police” in English, and would love to read more of her work in English or Japanese. 「博士の愛した数式」を巡って had some more niche topic terms relating to math, but the content was still not too difficult to understand.
So as I mentioned in the test on my audio thread last week, I played a bit of Persona 3 Portable to see if it would be feasible to try Persona 3 Reload in Japanese. The result was enough to consider giving it a go, and so… here we are. I’ve played basically up to the same point as I was in Portable, but with full Japanese instead of JP audio and EN text as I did with portable, so this time it gets to count for reading and listening practice. Probably good too, since I spent so long on it today I didn’t leave my time for alternative reading material…
Anyway, for anyone looking to change the game to Japanese, audio options are just in the menu, but for text you need to do a bit more. On steam you can go into the game properties and change the language, same as for portable, but if like me you’re taking advantage of it being on game pass, I found this Reddit thread on how to switch the game to Japanese to cover the text.
As for how it was… it was challenging, not going to lie. Even though it was my second time going through the content, I was 50% slower than on portable. But I’ll probably do more of it in the future.
February 1st!
2 more pages of the Orange light novel. I try to read more than this usually, but my attention span was pretty pathetic so I settled for 2 pages.
February 2nd!
A chapter of Teasing Master Takagi-san.
February 3rd!
The final chapter of volume 3 of スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり.
Finishing a volume always feels good.
