I guess you are aware of @ChristopherFritz 's page, just in case it might help… although I’m guessing your issue is the unique words used only once…

It’s on my wishlist, but based on what you’re going through I’m going to have to wait a while for Dungeon Meshi (L 30) as I find Slam Dunk (L 24) closer to my top end comfort zone for manga

finished vol 8 of ouran! some parts of that arc haven’t aged super well, but overall was a good time. then again i have a soft spot for ヤンキー so maybe i’m biased the <ruby lan design for haruhi was too good to only appear once :((( in between some of the chapters the author has been showing off the other translations of ouran, and the english one turned up at the end of the volume! fun to see. also read another chapter of sketchy, much shorter than the first, and a had a profile of a real life woman skateboarder at the end! queer element seems to have been wishful thinking  oh and some more pages of the 幕末(ばくまつ) book

today’s nhk article was this one, another granblue chapter, plus the entry on には in aDoIJG

words that stood out

桜蘭(おうらん)
(しの)びない - unable to bear, cannot bring oneself to
宇宙遊泳(うちゅうゆうえい) - space walk. this manga istg

スケッチー:
トイザらス - toys r us. as in the toy shop chain.

i wish i did  i have a list of all the digital volumes i have that i made by hand, so i just copy it into this site and let it do it for me. someone more tech savvy could probably do some sort of script or something to do it without the time-consuming making of the list first, but that person is not me, sorry

Progress - page 33/67

I’ve noticed I’m imagining in my head a lot more of what’s happening with what I read over simply translating each sentence into English and then making sense of it. It’s not instant like in English were you kind of completely forget you’re reading and it all just plays out in your head, but it’s getting there.

What mostly brings it out of the moment is those silly brain pops were you read something like 部屋 and think “I have no idea what this is” only to find you very much do know what it is and have seen it a thousand times.

Jan 22nd!
A chapter of スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり today. Really enjoyed this one

Jan 23rd!
Started Volume 15 of Shadows House, and read the first chapter. Very tempted to read on because I want to know what happens next, but I’m very conscious of how little time there is before I’ll run out so I’m trying to savour it!

Jan 24th!
About 4 and a half pages of the Orange Light Novel today. I had planned to read a bit more today, but I have the attention span of a goldfish at the moment (Which incidentally is also why I keep forgetting to post each day )

Skipped reading yesterday. I was not in the mood. I was in the mood for very little yesterday, feeling overall frustrated the whole day without a specific reason (a few intangible ones though).

Anyway, today I’ve read some samples because I’m planning an Amazon jp order. If anyone have a finished manga series (or more slice of life if not finished) recommendation for natively level 22-25ish (lower is fine, mostly I’m not looking for more difficult), I’d love it.

I’m very sad because Flying Witch isn’t available for volume 2-8 or something like that, and I have volume 1-3, so can’t buy the next few. I also had that problem with a few other different series. :sob:

What I generally like: character driven with character development (the same again all the time comedy is not for me), preferably story but then I very much prefer the series to be completed, I’m more modern day or history or fantasy, and not so SF, not a fan of battle manga/shounen in general.

Lol, do know that none of those are a strict no (if a dislike). Just hit me with your favorites. There is a big chance I’ve considered most of them before (since I’ve been in these reading threads for more than a year) so absolutely chill if nothing new comes up, but I thought I’d ask in case I missed something obvious to buy physically. And only looking for manga, LNs and books I buy ebook.

:heavy_heart_exclamation: Sakura and Suzuki, episodes 1 to 4 on Satori Reader. It’s easy to understand, I have the feeling I’m good at listening lol I tried the harder version, but for now, I’ll keep on with the easier one.

Two days ago, I began reading Super Frog saves Tokyo by Murakami Haruki, a short story really fun and surrealistic for now. It’s surprisingly easy and Murakami Haruki is a japanese author I already love (I’ve read some of his novels translated in french), so I’m thrilled to be able to read a text written by him in japanese ! :star_struck:

tentative manga rec

I’m guessing you’ve already heard of everything we know about, lol. Here’s one on my wishlist that might interest you. I got the first two volumes for free on Bookwalker. It looks really fun and not too difficult, complete at 10 volumes. So although it’s not rated yet, I can imagine it’s up your alley. But I haven’t gotten around to reading more than the first few pages:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4861278635
but quite a risk to spring for all 10 volumes without a firm recommendation from anyone. Probably best to just test the waters if the sample looks interesting…

Summary (deepl)
I am used to animals and taking care of geniuses.

Ryo Shiina is a young assistant professor at a university who aspires to become a zoologist. He is surrounded by the odd laboratory members who are not very sociable…?
The long-awaited first volume of the zoologist’s ecological observation story by an up-and-coming artist is here!

Finished up GuP: Little Army today as expected. The last chapter went very quick as it was mostly focused on interpersonal issues so lots of vocab I’ve already encountered in other media about fights and arguments etc. Given that, I may play some デジモンサヴァイブ this evening, so this might not be the last of today’s reading.

Have you read Basara? Fantasy type setting, 27 volumes, finished, 90s shoujo, romance element but it’s kind of the B story to the main character/action plot. Natively says “level 24??”, but no gradings yet so not guaranteed to be in your range. Full furigana. I liked it a lot, but maybe you didn’t want a 27 volume fantasy epic

this one is especially annoying because i’m just missing a huge swatch of volumes right in the middle! Will have to look out for them at a book-off when I’m next in JPN

Have you read 少女終末旅行 (series) | L22 already? It is SF, dystopian, sad, bleak, weird, happy and all of it together  Also it’s a finished series with 6 volumes, and I loved it to bits. (Which says a lot as I’m not very much into manga, admittedly.)

It’s so often that whatever I read in Japanese ends up being about cooking, can’t avoid it so might as well learn it. Luckily chapter 5 of Quartet is all about cooking and there are some cool stuff in it

Two recipes:

「肉じゃがの作り方」 How to Cook Nikujaga

「関西風お好み焼き」の作り方 How to Cook Okonomiyaki

And this amazing cheat sheet (assuming you can figure out the answers :joy:):

I believe the answers are
  1. a, 2. f, 3. d, 4. h
  2. e, 6. c, 7. g, 8. b

Hmmm… without looking anything up…

運転者:I’m sorry, it’s no good but I can’t get any closer than this [lit the car can’t continue…]
舞妓:The house [Maiko dormitory? I can’t remember] is pretty close, so if you let me off here I can walk it easily.
運転者: That’s great! My apologies

how did i do?

Cooking vocab is fun, I feel like it’s a lot easier to internalise because it’s very action orientated so there’s a lot of sense markers to tie the words to in addition to just the kanji/pronounciation etc

Anyway…

  • Reread this week’s 不思議駄菓子屋 portions again as practice
  • Finished ほろ酔い5 on the train
  • Started and finished リューシカ・リューシカ 2 | L18 in one shot (okay, two shots, but I put a break in the middle to go to the gym). I don’t think it’s a very good beginner manga because it’s too imaginative and weird than something more grounded, and the main character (as a kid) speaks mostly in hirigana; but as a book, and at the level I am at now, I’m surprised at how fun it is just to read casually. The fact it’s in all colour doesn’t hurt either.

I forgot to mention I started Yakuza Gaiden, but I’m not really reading anything right now since I’m playing with english subs; I guess it’s more listening practice.
