📚📚 Read Every Day Challenge - Winter 2024 🎍☃🌲

2024-01-25T01:18:00Z

Thanks for the rec. However, I don’t see myself writing (or typing) out 1000s of books so I’ll continue to use my usual method of picking a book to read- vibes. I have a bingo challenge to complete anyway so that might add some variety even if it’s still the same genre- SFF.

I got a new toy and spent too much time messing around with it instead of doing… anything, actually  Absolutely not something that’s helpful to my japanese learning in any way, but it’s a really funny object to own.

HDMI -> RCA adapter

It has… basically no lag? which is really surprising for a $2 piece of trash, honestly. These chips are getting so good now that even the knock off garbage is pretty usable. I tried playing touhou and a bit of runescape and didn’t notice any delay to make me think it’s unplayable or anything. I did almost completely break my actual computer trying to set it up, which is what really made it took so long. I’ve been wanting to set up a second tower as an XP or DOS machine already for a while though, and this might be a fun thing to use with that.

  • シャドーハウス - chapter 151
  • ARIA - chapter 15
  • ジョジョ - chapter 4

If you’re up for yuri, I liked かけおちガール (Natively level 22) a lot! If you haven’t read it or heard of it already, it’s about two women in their mid-twenties who meet again after 10 years, and has a pretty character-driven plot. There are some darker themes though involving (mild spoilers) domestic abuse if you’re averse to that. I also enjoyed the fairly unique (imo) art style which I found quite pretty! It’s a short completed series with 3 volumes in the physical release (4 digital volumes for some reason).

Finally read some manga today, catching up with the shikimori club. My copies of mysterious sweet shop came, yaaay!! I read the prologue page with lookups, then the first page no lookups. This book is… adorable!! :triumph: I’ll probably read ahead some then go back through with lookups, but I think the natively book club pace is definitely a slow enough pace to join.

I was really in the mood to read today, so I read 4 level 1 readers on Tadoku, 2 N5 articles on Watanoc, and an article on NHK News Easy about (I think) the plum blossoms blooming. I also tried again to read that comic on Comico but noped out because it has no furigana and I’m not ready for that :joy:

:face_holding_back_tears: everyone is so cute i’m just so obsessed with these characters

Volume One of Atelier is now finished and I get to check off the bingo category for “beautiful cover” :smiling_face_with_tear: It was such a pleasure experiencing this manga from knowing nothing about it and getting to be surprised by every part of the story. I can’t wait until the anime comes out!

See you next time ^–^

Thanks for the recommendations! @mitrac @pm215 @NicoleIsEnough @Clovie

@mitrac I couldn’t tell from the sample if this is something I would like, but it seemed interesting. I hope I see what you think of the first two volumes when you get around to them, because it might very well be up my alley, but the sample was too short to tell.

Wednesday’s reading

  • Another Akiko episode
  • A whole biography in one sitting (:person_cartwheeling::star_struck::sob:) I’ll write about this in my blog later, but this was so exciting and poignant. Finally, the 十分で読める伝記 lives up to it’s name, lol. This was the first time I could just keep reading and understanding and not get lost. And, to top it off, this was the first biography in the book I tried reading back in March 2021 when I bought it. And promptly got so overwhelmed I set it aside. So this was a very pleasant and joyful read about 牧野富太郎, Tomitaro Makino, the father of Japanese botany.

So glad you’re joining!!! The story is so fun, I’m glad you have a good first impression, phew. As an aside to a fellow paper reader, isn’t the paper lovely on this one!?

makes note in Natively - tag MissDagger when you review it! I’ll let you know, it looks pretty easy so will be one of the earlier ones I get around to!

Title Pages read Progress Status
ふらいんぐうぃっち vol. 6 35-88 88/176 reading
鋼の錬金術師 vol.10 52-100 100/182 reading
ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石 vol. 5 89-103 103/256 reading

Considering my mediocre score at JLPT N3 (37/60) I feel pretty comfortable. I hope this challenge will help me to have better results at N2 in July. Although it is better to add things like news or at least Shin Kanzen Master Dokkai, but I like reading just for fun so much :sob:

first chapter of vol 9 of ouran! was backstory on the twins (and the last backstory apparently), think it sort of lost me in places but i got most of it. surprise furby mention in the author’s note/column. also read two chapters of sketchy, which was a mistake i should have stopped at one but nvm, done it now. i think i would like it more if it wasn’t full of copied instagram posts  one entry in the bakumatsu book

today’s nhk article was this one (plus a tiny bit of this one), another granblue chapter (military speech, hate it), and the entry on によって in aDoIJG (which is a whole 8 pages long)

words that stood out

桜蘭(おうらん)
ウニフラ - speech bubble with lines coming off it in manga. from ウニ and フラッシュ which is fun

スケッチー:
ディグる - to look for (music, etc.). was used in context for trawling through instagram
プデュ - short for produce101, i think
献杯(けんぱい) - toast to someone’s memory or health.

yeah don’t blame you, i only did it cos i had a list going anyway before i started, if i was doing it from scratch i wouldn’t have bothered

銀の笛と金の毛皮 :notes: :deer:
Progress - page 43/67

The silver flute playing and golden bag carrying main character goes into town where he is basically rejected for being a poor inaka kid. So he unleashes his inner Akiyama (Yakuza) and creates his own network of homeless people just because he has a ton of gold coins to throw around.

Wow, nice!!

I couldn’t not have a good first impression after the adorable illustration of mermaid gummies. :grinning:
Yes, the paper quality is really nice! The font is also bigger than my Goosebumps books which is kind of a nice change haha. It feels really nice to have a paperback read, but I have to be careful I don’t end up with too many books…

Today’s reading

  • Another Akiko episode. Listening only first (switching tack a bit now), then reading intensively (while listening), with a final listen only. I’ve always listened while reading on Satori but the new ‘reflection after the listening only passes’ is helping me to be more observant about where I’m not getting good comprehension of words I already know. The answer is generally incorrect pitch voicing in my head for that word, or a particle at the end. I just had that yesterday in my grammar course where the instructor was saying うまが and I’m thinking wildly what the hell is an umaga, she’s saying it like it’s obvious. And then just in time to connect it… oooh 馬が duh.
  • A closer read of yesterday’s biography that I read in one sitting. I could still get through half of it even with lookups, and the reread was nice.
  • And, I got around to looking (one of my first googles in Japanese) more into the painter in the previous biography. This led to more interesting finds than my English googling so I feel rewarded for the efforts! If anyone would like an image in their head for what 雪舟 (sesshu) painted, then here is some eye candy of his 四季山水図巻(しきさんすいずかん) (four season’s scroll landscape painting), the short one (10 m) at Kyoto’s National Museum, and a youtube video of the long one (60 m).

OMG it gets smaller than this?! I’ve come from the land of books for 2nd graders where the font is twic the size lol

I hear you!!! A year ago when I saw people mentioning that, I was like, how can that even happen, and then… oops, whelp, that goes quick!

Just one of those days where it clicked for me that my reading skills have improved  a few months ago, I would click every word on Satori Reader / use Yomichan on each word when reading a novel or manga, sometimes for the reading, sometimes for the meaning, sometimes even just to help and see where do words even start and end. Realized today that I don’t do it that much anymore, sometimes it even goes several sentences before I use any of my crutches

作家になりたい! (1) (30.34% → 48.34%);

This week has been really busy, but I’ve continued to read at least a little every day (even during a 24h shift, I managed to find some moments to read on my phone ).

That’s a great achievement, your vocabulary must have increased quite a bit :tada: II’m still in the Yomitan-click-everywhere phase, I hope that I’ll also be able to notice such an improvement in the next few months.

Read quite a bit in the morning. I used to be good at getting up early, but now I end up reading in bed instead when I don’t have early classes.

I think I found a way to remember 傘 (on’yomi) = さん. I couldn’t remember it from seeing 傘下, but then I remembered the word ‘parachute’ has it. I couldn’t recall the exact word neither in Japanese or English, all I knew is that the kanji should spell “fall-down-umbrella” from having learnt it during uni, so kanji by kanji that’s らく・か・さん → らっかさん. It was a funny moment looking it up.
