๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š Read every day challenge - Winter 2023 โ˜ƒโ„

Yeah, I mean in reality you just need to know the terms, you donโ€™t have to really understand per se. Its like watching or reading anything SF in your native tongue, the technojargon is to sell you on the world building mostly.

I love Steins;Gate, do you guys think one can play it around level 30? Besides the techno jargon, can one learn words from context (without all the mining)?

  • ๅคใธใฎใƒˆใƒณใƒใƒซใ€ใ•ใ‚ˆใชใ‚‰ใฎๅ‡บๅฃ Ch.1

I started (tried) yesterday, and finished the chapter today. With a little faster speed because I listened first, but be sure to see every words (to subvocalizing level).

  • ใ†ใŸใ‚ใ‚Œใ‚‹ใ‚‚ใฎ

Now, secrets of co-MC. Well, I knew the characters in advance.

Words of the day
  • ใฎใฃใ—ใฎใฃใ— = (on-mim) walking heavily = ใฎใ—ใฎใ—
  • ใŠใฎใšใจ = naturally; in due course; of its own accord = ่‡ช(ใŠใฎ)ใšใจ
  • ็”ณ(ใ‚‚ใ†)ใ—ๅ‡บ(ใง) = a proposal; suggestion. Apparently, ๆๆกˆ(ใฆใ„ใ‚ใ‚“) is nearly, but listed separately.
  • ๆœ‰(ใ‚)ใ‚Šไฝ“(ใฆใ„)ใซ = frankly
  • ้€™ใ€…(ใปใ†ใปใ†)ใฎไฝ“(ใฆใ„) = escaping in shame, panic = ้€™้€™(ใปใ†ใปใ†)ใฎไฝ“(ใฆใ„). Has Furigana. The Kanji from ้€™(ใฏ)ใ† (= to crawl).
  • ๅฝนๅพ—(ใ‚„ใใจใ) = privilege benefits; perks
  • ้€—็•™(ใจใ†ใ‚Šใ‚…ใ†) = staying at; sojourn. Has Furigana.
  • ๆต…่‘ฑ่‰ฒ(ใ‚ใ•ใŽใ„ใ‚) = pale green color, like pale color of a ่‘ฑ(ใญใŽ) (= spring onion). No Furigana. Sounds like ๆต…(ใ‚ใ•)ใ„ + ้ป„่‰ฒ(ใใ„ใ‚)?
  • ไฝฟ็ฏ€(ใ—ใ›ใค) = envoy; ambassador of a country
  • ่ฉฆ็€(ใ—ใกใ‚ƒใ) = trying on clothes
  • ่ซฆๅฟต(ใฆใ„ใญใ‚“) = understanding and acceptance. First Kanji from ่ซฆ(ใ‚ใใ‚‰)ใ‚ใ‚‹.
  • ๆ†Žๆ‚ช(ใžใ†ใŠ) = hatred; detestation
  • ๅซŒๆ‚ช(ใ‘ใ‚“ใŠ) = disgust
  • ่”‘(ใชใ„ใŒใ—)ใ‚ใซใ™ใ‚‹ = to make light of; to ignore, with disrespect. Has Furigana. The Kanji is from ่ปฝ่”‘(ใ‘ใ„ในใค). Another single Kanji word I think I have seen is ่”‘(ใ•ใ’ใ™)ใ‚€.
  • ่™ฑๆฝฐ(ใ—ใ‚‰ใฟใคใถ)ใ— = thorough searching. Has Furigana. Literally, indeed, crushing every single lice.
  • ๅ››่‹ฆๅ…ซ่‹ฆ(ใ—ใใฏใฃใ) = being in dire distress
  • ้ ญ(ใ“ใ†ใน)ใ‚’ๅ›ž(ใ‚ใ)ใ‚‰ใ™ = to turn oneโ€™s head over the shoulder. First half has Furigana, but not the verb (and I couldnโ€™t guess, actually simply couldnโ€™t recall).

BU$TAFELLOWS :moneybag:

Spent a lot of time on B$ today. I went through and unlocked all the routes, so I can start them whenever. So now Iโ€™m caught up. Iโ€™m not planing to try and read all of Limboโ€™s route over the next week.

Instead, Iโ€™ll read the weekly amount of Orange tomorrow and then get back into Loopers I think. Canโ€™t let my reading partner get ahead of me. Hehe. xD Iโ€™m already ahead on Komi-san, so will see if she gets some space too, or if Iโ€™ll just wait until the club catches back up with me. I think Iโ€™ve read about half the chapters, so will take a couple of weeks, maybe?

Feels good to be caught up with all my book clubs, even if it is because I have skipped a part of B$ temporarily. :woman_shrugging:

March thus far:

March 1st

4ish hours of Side Kicks! (VN) - I need to play in shorter bursts next time cause I got a little burnt out after, but it was the most listening practice Iโ€™ve had in a long time!

March 2nd
read the free sample of ่”‘ใ‚€่ฆ–็ทšใŒๆœ€้ซ˜ใงใ™ (manga) on bookwalker. seems funny, I might buy the volume

March 3rd

finally got around to trying ใ‚ตใ‚ฏใƒฉใ€ใ‚ตใ‚ฏ - Sakisaka Ioโ€™s new manga. I stopped reading ๆ€ใ„ใ€ๆ€ใ‚ใ‚Œใ€ใตใ‚Šใ€ใตใ‚‰ใ‚Œ at some point and didnโ€™t check in on her works for a while so this was a fun surprise! Read 2 chapters (half of vol 1) - it seems sweet so far.
@ChristopherFritz have you tried it?

Not yet. Iโ€™m starting with the mangakaโ€™s older works and moving toward newer ones, so Iโ€™ll begin with Strobe Edge (which has been on my โ€œto start readingโ€ list for a month or two nowโ€ฆ)

March 3rd!

Today I read this weekโ€™s ABBC assignment of Ruri Dragon (a few hours early!) and also started the final Volume of Happiness and read Chapter 46.

  • started 2.43 ch 2.3 SCARY GAME, reading 8 pages and leaving off on pg 193. I learned that the line Yuni mutters at the end of his and Chikaโ€™s little exchange where Chika tells him he needs to catch up to and surpass Mimura Subaru on his own and then calls him an idiot, โ€œYou Tลkyลites really know how to make your insults hurtโ€ฆโ€ (he said ใƒใ‚ซ, which to the ๆจ™ๆบ–่ชž-speaking Chika is just normal, but in Fukui like in Kansai, itโ€™s the other way around with ใ‚ขใƒ› being the normal one and ใƒใ‚ซ being the stronger one lmao) was anime-original. Iโ€™m kind of sad. I wanted the whole exchange to be in the novel. Anyway, Iโ€™m excited for the rest of this chapter, since itโ€™s what was covered by ep 8 a.k.a. my favorite ep!
  • some ใญใ“ๅณถ็‰ฉ่ชž
Some vocab of note:

่—ช่›‡ (ใ‚„ใถใธใณ) [n.] unnecessary trouble brought upon oneself; stirring up a hornetโ€™s nest. Itโ€™s a shortening of the expression ่—ชใ‚’ใคใคใ„ใฆ่›‡ใ‚’ๅ‡บใ™ (lit. โ€œpoke at a bush and out a snake will comeโ€), and is itself used in the expression ่—ช่›‡ใซใชใ‚‹.
ๅ ดๆ•ฐใ‚’่ธใ‚€ (ใฐใ‹ใšใ‚’ใตใ‚€) [expression, ใƒžไบ”] to gain experience; to get accustomed (with something)
ๆ„ใซไป‹ใ™ใ‚‹ (ใ„ใซใ‹ใ„ใ™ใ‚‹) [expression, ใ™ใ‚‹ verb] to mind; to care; to worry. Usually used in the negative.

I missed doing an update yesterday, but didnโ€™t miss my reading! Got super busy with some irl stuff and then the friends wanted to go back to the arcade. Was exhausted when I got back and took a nap, iโ€™ve kind of lost track of what โ€œdayโ€ my body clock is on right now so I figured iโ€™d just combine em. time is fake :skull:

Also realized at some point i mustโ€™ve mistyped 3ๆœˆใฎใƒฉใ‚คใ‚ชใƒณ in my ime and Iโ€™ve just been using auto complete and writing ๏ผ“ๆœˆใฎใƒชใ‚ชใƒณ for (probably) months

Read:

Iโ€™ve been busier than expected, and pretty tired out, so I havenโ€™t yet finished this weekโ€™s reading for ๅŠ่ฝใก. Iโ€™m maybe halfway done? Iโ€™m hoping Iโ€™ll have time on Sunday to just finish the book out.

Iโ€™ve also been reading a bit of ้Š€ๅบง่ญฆๅฏŸๆฎบไบบ่ชฒ before bed and itโ€™s not even remotely surprising that only 2 people on Bookmeter have read this and no reviews on Amazon. Itโ€™s very, very average. Makes for good bedtime reading as I donโ€™t get too invested and want to read on. So far what we know is that a man showed up at the police station asking to see the station head, then suddenly collapses and has to be taken to the hospital where heโ€™s declared dead. He isnโ€™t carrying any ID, but he does have a match box full of ่ฆš้†’ๅ‰ค (:scream:) and his dying words are possibly ใ€Œใ‚จใ‚คใ‚นใƒŽใ‚นใƒขใ‚ฆใ€or something like that. The only witness isnโ€™t totally sure what he heard. But the cops have since decided that he must have been trying to tell them that a sumo wrestler who frequents the fancy club that the match box is from has AIDS (ใ‚จใ‚คใ‚บ, not ใ‚จใ‚คใ‚น but well weโ€™re already stretching so might as wellโ€ฆ). They eventually find out the manโ€™s identity and he was busted for drug peddling a long long time ago but has had a clean record since. No leads. So now the cops are talking about how they can investigate this fancy club.

I also have an ่ตคๅทๆฌก้ƒŽ book by my bed but I so far have been more in the mood for the 90s ใƒ€ใ‚คใ‚คใƒณใ‚ฐใƒกใƒƒใ‚ปใƒผใ‚ธ cop drama. :person_shrugging:

More Steins;Gate again! Not a whole lot as I ended up fairly productive with other things, but it continues to be intriguing in various ways :eyes:

Thatโ€™s true, Iโ€™m probably being pickier about it than I need to be haha. Itโ€™s the same as like specific fish species or other random stuff I only have a vague sense of in English, like if I only kind of know what it is in English, why should I need to have such a better grasp of it in Japanese? And yet :joy: a good reminder though.

I mean Iโ€™m always a proponent of trying to read whatever you want and see how it goes, so from that standpoint sure! If you enjoy it thatโ€™s really all that matters, but I do think Steins;Gate is going to be pretty lookup heavy coming from really any wanikani level to be honest. Comparing to other things Iโ€™ve read, I think Steins;Gate covers a pretty interesting breadth of language, because of the sciencey stuff yes, but also lots of slang (especially like 2000s otaku slang that it generally defines for you) and the way certain characters talk as Iโ€™m sure you can imagine, being familiar with Steins;Gate :joy: Thatโ€™s not to say you canโ€™t do it, you certainly could, itโ€™d just probably be pretty slow going for a while. But if you like doing it itโ€™d certainly be a good learning experience, and having knowledge of the story already would give you a boost for sure. So really itโ€™s up to you and your learning style and what you want to dedicate your time to :man_shrugging:

I stopped buying Ihr Hertz because itโ€™s a pain to get rid of and so I havenโ€™t been keeping up with Saezuru. This new volume is fantastic though!! I had to skim to later chapters because it was so exciting! I canโ€™t get over Yashiro shoving the idiot out the door in order to pull Domeki in!!! Also the way the spice is going down!!
Metaphors to unpack there :eyes:

Also I went to the bookstore and got several books and Iโ€™m hoping one of them helps me stick to this challenge better. Letโ€™s enjoy the seasons has a page for every day of the year with a lot of info about Japanese culture and suggestions of things to do/eat/try. also it has the infamous Japan has 24 seasons line on the cover For 3/3 one of the things it says is that a long time ago, people (girls?) used to take the dolls outside on this day to show them spring scenery.

Hold the f-ing phone, went to count the pages (sorry drafted most of this yesterday) and thereโ€™s not only no page numbers, but the โ€œtable of contentsโ€ just says ๅ›€(ใ•ใˆใš)ใ‚‹้ณฅ(ใจใ‚Š)ใฏ็พฝ(ใฏ)ใฐใŸใ‹ใชใ„. What is the point? Is my book defective? Thereโ€™s no chapters even listed. Thatโ€™s not normal right?

Yeah that was my problem when I first started reading Manga, I was like โ€œDamn, this is hard to understand.โ€ and then I realized in English I didnโ€™t care about 100% understanding it eitherโ€ฆ so outside of knowing the word, I donโ€™t need to understand it. But it makes sense we do that because those first 2500 words are words we should have a deep understanding of, like water, fire, etc.

Thank you for the reply. Yeah, I think Iโ€™ll leave as a goal to be achieved in the not so distant future. Right now I do have some difficult with Conan, and there are a lot of look up words if I want to understand 100% of whatโ€™s written on the page. What I ended up not doing. I tend to avoid these intensive research, it usually doesnโ€™t bring me โ€œmore knowledgeโ€ and just adds to the frustration.

!! It me!
Feel like I should know the word, but canโ€™t say Iโ€™ve ever seen it before

Let me see, I have not updated in March at all, have I? Here we go:

March 1st :heavy_check_mark: :cityscape: :flashlight:

ใƒฆใƒผใƒˆใƒญใƒ‹ใ‚ซใฎใ“ใกใ‚‰ๅด , 59-62%
ๅŠ่ฝใก , 70-72%

March 2-4 :heavy_check_mark: :flashlight:

ๅŠ่ฝใก , 72-100%

I read a little more of ใƒฆใƒผใƒˆใƒญใƒ‹ใ‚ซใฎใ“ใกใ‚‰ๅด to finish a very strong chapter, then devoted the rest of my time to ๅŠ่ฝใก, to finish a very strong book! (and the first book to finish in March)

In the next few days Iโ€™ll continue with ใƒฆใƒผใƒˆใƒญใƒ‹ใ‚ซใฎใ“ใกใ‚‰ๅด, but I also need to pick at least one more book to read on the side. I used to like devoting my attention to one book at a time, but the overlapping book clubs have taught me that variety can be fun too. And I have no active book clubs (other than the informal one) until April, soโ€ฆ

I find seeing ไบ”ๆœˆ่ฟ(ใ†ใ‚‹ใ•)ใ„ repeatedly amusing. Having a feel of May flies (but not mayflies), seriously? Well, there are also others, like ้ž้“(ใฒใฉ)ใ„.

In the time of calamities.

I also read a chapter of Yurucamp. It seems that now I can read manga without that much effort, and optional looking-up. However I still want to read faster and still have a good understanding. Also, not every material is story-type.

Words of the day
  • ใตใ‚“ใ ใ‚“(.) = plentiful
  • ใ“ใ‚“ใ‚‚ใ‚Š(.) = (on-mim) dense; luxuriant
  • ใฒใจใ—ใใ‚Š = for a little while = ไธ€้ ป(ใฒใจใ—ใ)ใ‚Š. Perhaps easier if thinking of ้ ป(ใ—ใ)ใ‚Šใซ first. (Although used differently.)
  • ใธในใ‚Œใ‘(.) = dead drunk
  • ใ‚ใ‚ŒใคใŒๅ›ž(ใพใ‚)ใ‚‰ใชใ„ = slurred speaking. ๅ‘‚ๅพ‹(ใ‚ใ‚Œใค) is articulation (though the word sounds like slurring itself :stuck_out_tongue:).
  • ็ฉบ่€ณ(ใใ‚‰ใฟใฟ) = mishearing
  • ่ƒŒๅพณ(ใฏใ„ใจใ) = corruption; immorality

  • ่‰€(ใฏใ—ใ‘) = baggage boat. Has Furigana.
  • ่‰ค่ฃ…(ใŽใใ†) = outfitting of a ship; preparing a ship for journey. Has Furigana. Sounds like ๅฝ่ฃ…(ใŽใใ†) and ๆ“ฌ่ฃ…(ใŽใใ†) (= fake / in disguise, perhaps both are different too as also shown in IME).
  • ๅ‡ถไฝœ(ใใ‚‡ใ†ใ•ใ) = bad harvest
