Coincidentally I also found 廓 in the book I was reading today. One of the oddities of reading Japanese historical fiction is how many synonyms for “red light district” and related terms you run into. My jlpt deck already has 娼館, 妓楼, 泥水. 岡場所 and 遊女, and I haven’t been putting all of these words in it…

I mentioned this in my study log, but OCJB acquired two new volumes last night. I didn’t buy them for myself, so I didn’t break my promise hopefully they aren’t too hard, one of them is a full color manga adaptation of 紅の豚 (porco rosso), and the other is the first volume of the 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン collectors edition manga. So OCJB is currently at 7/13. I also picked up a few of the cheap light novels in the sale on bookwalker right now 幼なじみが絶対に負けないラブコメ, 狼と香辛料, and とらドラ！, plus the first volume of 作りたい女と食べたい女 1, since that was also on sale. 積読本が増えてるね…

When I have worked on other languages in the past, mainly french, I regularly ran into problems where I would run out of stuff to read/watch in those languages. Now I’m having the opposite problem I feel like I could spend every waking minute for the next several years reading in japanese and still not run out of stuff

Instantly recognizable background artist responsible for a lot of the great atmosphere in ghibli films (among others). I didn’t know about these other project he worked on, but will have to check them out. I remember messaging a friend one time about some pretty clouds and her remarking “they look like the ghibli clouds!” so even if you don’t know him by name, you might recognize his touch.
• スーパーの裏 ch 5, 6 - I did a bit of re-reading and skimming to look for an answer to a question in the book club, but then read a couple chapters normally since I already had it up.

There are actually three volumes out now. The third one was released late last month. The fourth one will be released on 2024-01-25.

The wait is long… I certainly hope it will become an unofficial club once we’re done with the first volume. Even so we’ll run out of volumes and chapters quite quickly.

Fatal Twelve (16.1k characters)

Haven’t read the last couple of days, I was busy planning (hopefully) the final changes to my schedule that I’m happy about once again and taking care of some other stuff, it should be good from now on. Resuming daily reading from tomorrow onwards \o/ . The new schedule should allow a fair amount of listening time early in the morning, best case an hour, and also free up more leisure/unallocated time at the end of the day, so a pretty good bump to productivity over all: should be able to use my time in a better way and keep procrastination more in check. I say should, all that’s left is testing it , but I have a good feeling it’ll work out. It’s not really much different from what I was doing, but I just noticed that there are certain times at which I don’t feel like doing certain things at all and therefore I end up procrastinating a lot and cut free time at the end of the day. I’ve just swapped those things around, and optimised them as much as I could, so that none of them fall into lazy hours. Stuff like “I don’t feel like reading in the evening, but I don’t mind doing this in the evening instead, nor reading at the time I normally do that, so let’s swap them around”, type of thing. I’m rambling. Anyways hope it works out!

Seasons was about 葛切(くずき)り, a wagashi and 夕涼(ゆうすず)み or the weather that’s somewhat started where we have cooler evenings.

Funnily, I got the new Ultra Jump, previewed the new JoJo chapter and then while flipping through to try to find all the specials (mail order t-shirt), sweepstakes/lottery, etc, I ended up legit reading the majority of the 岩元(いわもと)先輩(せんぱい)の推薦(すいせん) chapter. It’s so beautiful illustrated that it always catches my eye and the story looked so interesting that I ended up reading it. It was pretty standalone, so that was convenient. I think I’ll try to read the whole series probably next year after I’ve finished JoJo and the book clubs I’m in wrap up.

As for the cat manga , it’s a 2 volume set of trash I found at BOOKOFF. It’s easy to read, so I’ll probably zoom through it and then sell it back I should really work on catching up on book clubs though

At least ロジカとラッカセイ was a nice sweet easy read, so I managed that before I started vomiting yesterday! Have woken feeling much better though not 100%. Will try to read Spy Family and a couple of dictionary entries today.

Finished ch. 3 of Chobits - fun problem, had some fonts too bold to really see what the kanji were supposed to be. I guess if I knew the kanji involved I’d be fine, but I don’t. Fun to read it in the original though. Toward the end of the chapter I started logging a list of kanji encountered, might start making some vocabulary lists to post up somewhere in case anyone wants to read it but wants to learn the right kanji first.

  「同じことでしょう」「違うよ。スッポンとスリッパくらい違う」 lmao the usual expression is 月とスッポン, but these it’s only the words that are similar. I wonder if it’s supposed to express the same degree of similarity, or if Sorami’s saying less “on the surface, sure” and more “not even remotely, bub.”
  Since the third-years retire after the summer tournament in tennis, they probably won’t be showing up in the rest of the series, huh. I’m a little sad. I like Sora-senpai.

did this week’s ouran reading, and tho the start was a struggle (as always) i actually didn’t find it that bad after about the ten page mark. maybe it’s cos i remember this plotline fairly well from the anime. gave up on the end of chapter comic thingy tho, my brain just wasn’t in it.

today’s nhk article was this one, and today’s fate episode was プレミアムフライデー’s summer one. she talks so quickly. more y5 as per. i want to be invested in haruka’s idol storyline but it seems so unimportant compared to literally everything else going on, and she doesn’t seem too interested in it either so

Words of the day

• ストール(.) = a stole. Like a scarf
• 当(あ)てずっぽう = random guess
• 外堀(そとぼり)を埋(う)める = to remove obstacles in the way; to fill outer moat surrounding (protecting) the castle.
• 集束(しゅうそく) = convergence (of light). Like 収束(しゅうそく), but of light.
• 陰(かげ)り = gloom
• 進行形(しんこうけい) = in progress
• 腫瘍(しゅよう) = tumor. Yeah, the Kanji reading (without Furigana) too, but swelling (腫(は)れる) is understandable. Another word with the second Kanji is 潰瘍(かいよう), but the Kanji is more on the eruption / pustule side.
• 帝王切開(ていおうせっかい) = Caesarian section (birth delivery surgery)
• 切迫早産(せっぱくそうざん) = threatened premature delivery, i.e. risky but not yet. Can be one of several signs preceding delivery.
• 遊歩道(ゆうほどう) = a public walk; promenade. Much like 歩道(ほどう), but with scenery and for walking.

Things have (sort of) settled down at the moment, though, and I thought that it’d be a shame to miss the reading challenge this summer. (I, admittedly, hated the idea of losing my participation streak in these.) So, I figured I’d keep track of my reading during the last week and a half of this challenge. I’d honestly like to read every day from now until the end of the year, but one goal at a time.

Two good days with quite a bit of reading. Managed to start Chapter 5 of Tobira, and finished Chapter 5 of Ouran as well, so I’m more or less on a good pace now. I’m also happy to have finished the first chapter of キノの旅, which has been very enjoyable so far. My goal this week is to work a bit on Tobira every day, as I want to be mostly done with the textbook before the JLPT in december. Tomorrow, I want to finish this week’s reading of コンビニ人間, and hopefully read some more あん and Ouran.
