I read the dictionary first and was so happy because I thought I’d caught up, but it turned out I forgot another week had started. So still one week behind, basically…

At least Ouran felt good, finishing off last week’s section. So I’m a week behind there, but at least I knew I was.

Next week, I should be caught up with both though, so that feels good. So almost caught up with 2/3 clubs. ^^

Ok been reading daily but haven’t posted for a bit – playing a lot of Splatoon but also when I’m on novel days, this book (家庭用安心坑夫) is hard enough it’s starting to get annoying and I’m being slightly more avoidant about reading, crawling through it getting the words I want to mine (trust me, doesn’t take long) and stopping when I can. Mostly it’s the sentences that go on for pages, but today in addition to some words none of my dictionaries could handle, I hit dialog that is written out like this:

いっつまで経ってもハァ嫁は取らね、せっかくの登用さも乗り気でね、なぁしておめはハァ、そったな自分の首サ絞めるよった真似ばり、すっかぜなあ？」

“おらほうだらハァ、ちょうどこったな頃からヤマさ潜ってらったでよ”

I’m at 28%, I dunno, this book is very irritating. Should I continue? Who knows.

Hello! Weekly update it seems… how do the days go by so fast…I missed out reading on the 15th, it was a holiday and day was busy doing things ad hanging out with family. The day afteTobira r that I seemed to have read quite a bit. I also started 上級への扉 all over again with a friend of mine, since we both wanted to get some more proper studying done! We mostly read dialogues and text and did speaking, but I guess I’m going to count it as reading material too! Also read an article about 関東・関西 regions, and the 関 in it, it was interesting. There’s a lot of interesting vocabulary I came across this past week but, honestly, I’m too sleepy to write it down rn… goodnight

9-Nine- Episode 4 (24.9k characters)

I couldn’t read the last couple of days, one of them was busy with celebrations and whatnot and the other one I didn’t feel like reading at all. I did try to read a bit the first day Muv-Luv for a bit, but I couldn’t get the hooks to work properly and I got a bit annoyed before having to leave so I just quit. In return I spent some time looking for a solution and I found that Textractor’s GitHub page has a pinned issue with updated files that fix issues for many VN engines, one of them Muv-Luv, and now I have an automatic hook that I don’t have to look for and works perfectly every time I open the game. It’s funny that whenever I don’t read I end up either fixing issues I’ve had or improving some aspect of my study system .

Then today I planned to read half the week for the club and ended up reading the whole thing.

I saw「こつぜん」in handwriting where someone saw something odd, like you would see「ドーン！」or something, and now I’m disappointed that I’ve never seen “unexpected!” in English manga.

Summary post

Oh dear, averaging about one update a month… I’m still keeping up with the challenge, though! Still haven’t missed a day.

The one year debut anniversary for my Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling translation twitter account was on August 2! I made a sappy thread about it, and also started a fundraiser for the Marsha P. Johnson Institute so that my followers can show their thanks for my labor. I found out through my blog’s stats that it has apparently had 2,315 unique visitors since I started it, so I set $2315 as the fundraiser goal with the expectation of basically never making it, haha, though we’ve raised a decent amount so far!

It’s kind of wild to think about 2,315 people reading my translations… Most of the translation post tweets get so little engagement, it’s easy to underestimate the size of my actual audience. Though I don’t think I have 2,000+ people regularly checking my blog or anything (regular traffic numbers aren’t that high, haha).

I’m proud of myself for keeping it up this long. It certainly hasn’t been easy.

Still in the midst of a particularly busy period, hence why I haven’t been posting much in here, haha. Since my last update, I’ve finished translating the 7.15 show, the 7.16 show, the 7.17 show (three tournament shows in a row… pain…), the 7.22 show, the TJPW match in the 8.2 666 20th anniversary show (which I ended up not needing to translate haha because my predecessor actually covered the post-match interview for that one), the 7.29 Korakuen Hall show, and the drawing for the semifinal match-ups on the same day, Super Sasadango Machine’s powerpoint in the 8.5 show, as well as the show itself.

And as of right now, I am three shows behind, and they all have quite a bit of post-match comments to translate, so it’s over 14,000 characters total… Hopefully this next period will be quieter, though, so I’ll have a bit more time to catch up.

I have a couple photos to share! This is from the August 5 TJPW show, where two wrestlers who aren’t even TJPW wrestlers had a singles match, haha. Super Sasadango Machine (who is from DDT Pro Wrestling) faced Aja Kong. Sasadango’s gimmick is that he always does these powerpoints at the start of the match, which become infinitely more rewarding the better your ability to read Japanese is. Here’s the first slide of this one:

The other photo I want to share is from the 666 show, not TJPW! Ram Kaichow, who has been with 666 her whole career, wanted to team up with her “wife” Raku for the promotion’s anniversary show. The marriage bit is a little difficult to explain haha because it started as sort of a joke at a previous TJPW show when they entered together and looked sort of like a bride and groom. Naturally that became the plot of a future match, which ended up leading to this one.

So here’s Ram Kaichow kissing her wife Raku during a move called the Oyasumi Express (Ram was very proud of herself for leaving a kiss mark on Raku’s cheek afterward, as Raku is an idol, so getting to kiss her is a rare privilege, haha):

Besides the wrestling stuff, I’ve actually been making decent progress on Read Real Japanese Essays! I finished どう書(か)いても嫌(いや)な奴(やつ)は嫌(いや)な奴(やつ) by 町田康(まちだこう), as well as 『博士(はかせ)の愛(あい)した数式(すうしき)』を巡(めぐ)って by 小川洋子(おがわようこ).

I thought the part in どう書いても嫌な奴は嫌な奴 where Machida put Sex Pistols lyrics into the です・ます調 form was really funny, haha. I liked 「博士の愛した数式』を巡って as well! So far, I haven’t particularly felt that the essays are increasing in difficulty, really, but maybe it’s because my knowledge is well-rounded enough that I have gaps in varying areas, so nothing feels too out of reach, but also my comprehension is never perfect no matter the subject or writing style…

Just two more essays left to go, and a little less than two weeks left of the month to finish them if I want to meet my goal! I think I’m going to manage to get there, though it’s proving a bit difficult balancing other reading with keeping up with my TJPW translations. I’m steadily catching up with the book club for A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar as well. I’ll probably be all caught up with everything right as the read every day challenge ends, haha.

As far as Spanish goes, I made great progress last month, but have slowed down a bit this month.

I ended up totally devouring the Aristóteles y Dante sequel. It took me I think twice as long to finish it as the first book, about two weeks, I think. I liked the sequel alright! I think I liked the first half better than the second. It was a great series for me to read at my current level; reading it on kindle made lookups extremely painless, and there were relatively few of them, so I wasn’t reading honestly that much slower than I’d be reading it in English.

After I finished it, I picked up Las malas by Camila Sosa Villada, which I think has an English translation available, but I’m not quite sure. It’s about a community of transgender sex workers in Argentina. There are some magical realism elements, like one of the characters is 178 years old.

I’m enjoying it so far, though it’s way, way more difficult to read than the other stuff I’ve read in Spanish, haha. It’s an adult novel with proper adult-level prose, and it uses a lot of evocative language that I have to look up. So progress has been much slower on this one. Especially since I’ve been enforcing a bedtime for myself recently, so I often end up with only about 15 minutes or so to read, which isn’t a whole lot of time.

I’m about a quarter of the way through the book, and probably won’t even reach the halfway point by the end of the month. That’s okay, though! I feel pretty good about the amount of time I was spending reading Spanish last month, so I think I did pretty well for myself overall. I think after I finish this book, I might go back to the YA genre for a bit just because it felt more appropriate for my current language level.

I actually saw 宵 in the wild today, outside the song title 今宵の歌, talking about how 11 p.m. in Fukui is like a ghost town but in Tōkyō it’s still evening.

• a bit more of the preview for 震える天秤. Wow, how long has it been since I said I would read some more of it? I’m half surprised it remembered where I was.
• 5 pages of 強者の同盟, leaving off on pg 71. Some of the terminology, like position names, have been updated in the bunko, and now they’re inconsistent with the rest of the series. I wonder if next4years uses these terms too… Well I’m still gonna be consistent when I translate, and that means using the old ones.
  It’s also kinda funny because she changed Subaru calling Tomoki “Kakegawa” like in the novel to calling him “Tomoki” like in the anime, since the anime uses the same terms as the novels. I wonder if Kabei-sensei had input on Subaru calling everyone (except Ochi, except when he was being completely serious) by their given name in the anime, since originally it was just the third-years (minus Ochi) and Kouhei. I do like this way better since it fits better with his mask, that persona he’s assumed of the charismatic, reliable, indomitable, indefatigable ace, and even if if may seem like he’s got this weird distance with Ochi because of it, really Ochi’s the only one he doesn’t wear his mask around (or at least, as much as he’s able to not wear it. He assumed that persona so young I’m not sure how separable it is from himself, especially considering the persona isn’t even a complete fabrication and every aspect of it is deeply rooted in who he is. Mimura Subaru doesn’t play volleyball, he is volleyball). I dunno, it’s interesting.
  I’ll have to find and reread the bit in 代表決定戦編 that mentions Subaru’s height at the beginning of high school. We didn’t get any concrete numbers, but we know he was fairly short in middle school and shot up sometime after the final tournament, and I thought it said he’d reached the 180s by the time he entered high school, but maybe it was just that summer. Because here we get that Jungo’s 188cm at the beginning of 2nd year and that he’s hardly grown since starting high school, when there was more than a 10-cm height difference between him and Subaru, so he had to have been upper-mid 170s max. (And then at their last HS tournament, they’re 189cm and 190cm, so Jun only just barely held on to his height advantage lol)
• 13 pages of 2.43, reading ch 1-2 SECOND UNIFORM and leaving off on pg 48. I still don’t really understand visual acuity notation stuff, but Chika’s vision is described as ◯・◯一 and Yuni 灰島の実に二百倍の視力を誇る, so I’m guessing he’s got perfect vision and Chika’s is 200x worse. That’s. I mean I knew he was practically blind, but.

Some vocab of note:

引っ叩く (ひっぱたく) [他カ五] to strike; to slap. Was not expecting that reading lol, but it does appear to come from an actual if less-common (of the usually-written-in-kana variety, to boot) reading of 叩.

today’s nhk article was this one, and today’s fate episode was ククル’s. was convinced that she was gonna reveal she was some sort of scammer or something but no! also some more y5 (now on haruka’s section, which is a real mechanical shift), plus the second trailer for gaiden cos i happened to catch it as it premiered.

• 見掛(みか)け = outward appearance

• 腕(うで)を振(ふ)るう = to exercise one’s talent. Except that it is written with an alternate Kanji (from 発揮(はっき)) = 腕(うで)を揮(ふる)う.

Read:

• 3月のライオン ch 9, shogi column 4, ch 10 - finally finally done! I think that between the large number of new words, metaphorical and abstract speaking, some characters speaking styles, and just the sheer text density of some sections, that this is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever finished reading. Even if i’d skipped the shogi columns (which were really fun so I’m glad I didn’t), easily easily the most time I’ve had to spend reading a single volume of manga since I first started reading. 20 page chapters could easily take a half hour, and the shogi columns each probably another 10 for a single page of text (lots of looking up names). I really really enjoyed it, but I’m not ready to tackle 15 more volumes of this at this current point in time I’ll be returning for them eventually though, don’t worry. OCJB 7/11

The remaining books for OCJB are all mostly still hard, but I’m hoping not quite as hard as that one was. 蟲師, 東方, the rest of vol 1 of ナウシカ are all probably going to take some real work, and then there’s a sumo shounen sports manga that I think will be a pretty quick one. Might do that next just to knock another one out quickly

Really nice to be reading a VN in Japanese. It alternates with voiced lines that are pretty similar to what I encounter in manga (so, rather easy), to long sentences, sometimes poetic descriptions, using a wider range of vocabulary and making me reread them several times to identify all the clauses and what happens. And even though my pace right now is around 20min for 1k, the plot line moves forward each time, so it’s very enjoyable. (in Wonderful Everyday, which I read in English, I remember some 30min scenes where there was so much time spent on describing the characters and what they might be thinking than in the end nothing had really happened, thought it was rather boring)

Funny how I learn many different things with this book. How to pick apples and groom apple trees, how to make tempura or hamburgers, how to paint a 障子… Enjoying it haha

Tomorrow I will probably start with the Book Club’s assignments, then the rest of the week will be about reading the material from Chapter 1 of Quartet very curious to see how dense it is and how well I will manage to understand.
