(I did finish a book today though, but only because I didn’t start a new one instead.)

• SPY×FAMILY mission 47-48. I love Anya’s expressions lol
• アオのハコ ch 13
• あん ch 11, which was about 8 pages
• 22 pages of 2.43, finishing the book! Aaa, it was so good! Also there’s a bit from the last ep that makes more sense now. I may read the 解説 tomorrow, we’ll see; I did read the one in the first novel.

I ended up buying two further volumes of ホリミヤ during the recent sale. Which was a good decision (compared to buying all available manga), as I feel like I “binged” enough volumes and want to continue reading something else now

Then as planned I started to read 本好きの下剋上. Since I bought the furigana Version, it was difficult as feared. But still after reading the first few pages I decided to go a different route this time and try learning the kanji/vocabulary through jpdb first. If this works out I guess I could have bought the non-furigana-version, too…

And then I read the usual book club parts. I am so happy that we finally continued with ロジカとラッカセイ

watched a fair chunk of y4 today (comfortably in saejima’s arc now) tho i had to go looking for another playlist and video that was missing from the one i was already using.

today’s fate episode was ユイシス’s and well, i didn’t expect all this yakuza practice to pay off but here we are very strange to go from the player character being called 団長(だんちょう) by everybody to 頭(かしら).

Words of the day

• 引(ひ)き攣(つ)る = to become stiff. No Furigana. The second Kanji is from 痙攣(けいれん), so the meaning is just that. 引(ひ)き攣(つ)り can mean simply, scar (e.g. ugly ones).
• 言葉(ことば)を挟(はさ)む = to butt in a conversation
• 立(た)て続(つづ)け = in succession
• 弱腰(よわごし) = timidly; faint-heartedly. The opposite is 強腰(つよごし).
• 爆竹(ばくちく) = firecrackers
• 楽園(らくえん) = paradise. For some reasons, that Kana Furigana is above 桃源郷(とうげんきょう). Another word is 極楽(ごくらく).
• 芸当(げいとう) = stunt; feat
• 騙(かた)り = fraud; swindler. Has Furigana. The Kanji is normally in 騙(だま)す.

Fatal Twelve (10.1k characters)

Well today certainly was a big disappointment in terms of language skill, feeling extremely humbled right now. I lost completely to a rather long and important part of a big explanation, I’m all spent and need a break until tomorrow. I don’t think I understood it properly and will need a re-read most likely. That was, well, unexpected, considering I was pretty happy yesterday about this new VN being an increase in difficulty but just about right. Today was plainly hard. Part of the reason is that I’m fairly tired and it’s been very hard to focus, but still. Not a big deal though, I’ll keep pushing through, but wow it feels so bad to be put in your place when you think things are going smoothly . Boy was I wrong, I have such a long way to go still. Suddenly feeling like I barely know this language at all.

At least on the PS4 version, you can pick from a choice of five fonts in the settings menu.

I don’t think the PC version has an option to change the font unfortunately, at least that I’ve seen. This one isn’t too bad, it’s quite aesthetic, but it’s not a font I can read quickly like some other ones. But hey, hoping that if I practise it will become one of those too in time.

If you’re talking about the part that I think you are, there has been some discussion in the club thread about that part straight up being not presented particularly clearly, and we’ve learned the PS4 version is at least somewhat differently written and reordered, so I’d at least try not to blame yourself TOO much. The rules are complex and the more I think about it the more I think information was haphazardly inserted without doing enough groundwork in the first place. Sometimes we’re learning technicalities and exceptions before the game has even properly given us the full substance of what it is it’s talking about.

Tadoku book - 入れて
This story has fill-in-the-blanks parts. Haven’t seen that before with these books. It’s obviously very easy because it’s a level 0 book, but I guess it can help retention if you have to actively try and remember instead of reading it over and over again.

Day 30! I’m not done for today yet but I wanted to report I’m happy to be seeing a really big improvement recently from all the reading. I jumped back into the 9-Nine- visual novel, which is now my easiest reading material (besides Pikmin I guess, as much as that counts), and tried to focus for an hour to see how far I’d get. This is still interrupted by mining words and having to spend a moment cleaning up those cards (grabbed 26 things in this time) – but I managed 9000 characters more or less! Very little in the reading was challenging so fara. A lot of this is the benefit of this being the final, 4th game in the series and the way that there’s voice acting to help me along, but this is a sort of speed I’ve never managed before. With all the things I’ve read on the side, and moving at a club pace so I don’t just do it straight through, seeing the enormous difference from VN 1 to 4 has been awesome. Things continue to look up!

Super chill reading for the weekend. ちー speaking in ひらがな is by far the hardest part of 元高木さん, almost enough for me to say that the Natively level 16 is too low. I mean, ひっさつわざ and いぶつこんにゅう. I can’t read without kanji. Luckily these chapters are really bite-sized, can chomp on them as time allows.

Going to finish ナウシカ１ tomorrow and catch up with the club next week, I hope.

Seasons was about fireworks. They’ve been used since the Edo period in Japan and they’re common in summer. That’s pretty much all they had to say.

JoJo 40 was the rest of the Janken arc. I love that if someone asks what the arc is about, the very simple answer is that some characters play rock paper scissors. Just like if you ask about the poker or video game arc, the simple answer is that they play those games with their souls as stakes, but still. It’s fun that they’re not fights in the beating each other up sense and I love that for JoJo. I don’t think Part 5 had any arcs like that, but I know 6 has catch. I hope there’s more in 7/8/9.

Nausicaa was interesting. The politics became a bit clearer and it was fun to see Nausicaa and another certain character interact.

Ouran was fun. It felt like an easier half chapter to me but that could have just been that my focus was good.
