Seasons was about 扇子(せんす), of which there are two types

the main differences being the number of spines and types of patterns.

JoJo 40 was fun. It’s the Janken Kid arc. It was nice to see Joseph and Rohan talk. I was surprised to see Joseph say that he can’t read Japanese manga because of the kanji. Rohan suggested he try the Taiwanese or European version of Pink Dark Boy, which ahoehirdfhwfehdkahskkdfkhhkshk. Taiwanese Mandarin uses traditional characters which wouldn’t solve the kanji problem. And European version?! What is it in? Esperanto? Also, good god, Rohan is serving in that outfit very distracting. Almost makes me forgive and forget. But the question of what language are people speaking is fascinating. I’ve discussed this with other JoJo fans, but for Part 3, it seems widely accepted that English is probably the common language between them. Joseph definitely speaks English, although what other languages besides Italian are a source of friendly debate. From living in Egypt and being a worldly man, we assume Avdol speaks English, French, and Arabic. Polnareff would obviously speak French and possibly poor English if that’s what he speaks with the rest of the Crusaders. Kakyoin is well traveled, so English and Japanese seem pretty likely. Then with Holly as his mom, I think most people figure Jotaro’s fluent in English and then obviously Japanese. Maybe he knows some Italian. Part 6 drives home that he’s definitely very competent in English. And then because of later information, we figure Polnareff probably speaks Italian too. BUT ANYWAY, back to Part 4. Tonio clearly speaks a very accented Japanese from the use of katakana where normally we’d see hiragana or katakana. I also noticed that Joseph speaks weirdly, but I figured it was to show his age/dementia. He mostly talks with Jotaro and Josuke too. A lot (or maybe the people I talk with most about JoJo?) headcanon that 1) Tomoko’s good at English and that’s part of how she got close with Joseph and 2) that she probably taught Josuke English. I don’t remember if we see Josuke’s grades, but we know Koichi sucks at English specifically. Anyhow, it seemed like a reasonable conclusion that Joseph, Jotaro, and Josuke spoke English when Joseph’s around. But this chapter implied that Joseph’s ok with Japanese, but not kanji. Anyway, very interesting info from my perspective.

Behind the Supermarket was cute. rough start to the chapter and even included a handwritten kanji I had trouble with, but by the end of the chapter, it seemed very cute to me. The whole but I know you’re the same person/nope you’re mistaken bit

Like I said yesterday, I decided to switch 10 min stories for Prefecture Stories . I remembered more than I thought I would so I skipped the prefectures I already read and read 5 new to me stories. It went well, much easier and less tedious than the last time I tried. I got all the comprehension questions right. The only word that really tripped me up was しゅうかく because I wasn’t parsing it as one word mentally for some reason, but I was able to figure out it was 収穫(しゅうかく) as in harvest. I left the book at work though, so no reading it this weekend If I do 5 stories a day though, that should be just shy of 2 weeks to finish.

Belated post for yesterday, though I haven’t managed much reading today. Getting into last minute packing mode (which is probably good, since it’s not quite last minute yet). But driving to the airport at 5am with a cat and luggage on Monday morning is going to be stressful.

I finally finished the penultimate story in 穴らしきものに入る, the one about masks (travelling got in the way). I can’t believe the book was written in 2011, way before the pandemic. It was a cool story, and a perfect metaphor for those crazy two years we just went through.

Basic premise:
The protagonist wakes up one morning and, looking in the bathroom mirror, realizes he’s wearing a mask (unsure what kind, but since he just brushed his teeth no problem, I suppose it’s the kind that covers the eyes only). He takes it off, only to have a different mask appear underneath, and then another one, and another one. Having to rush to work, he gives up trying to remove the masks, and goes out with a full-face wrestler-like mask on.

A group of kids on their way to school are excited to see him like this and follow him. People stare at him in the street, and he feels persecuted. While waiting at the traffic light he tears off his current mask (another one appears of course), and trying to hide himself as well as he can he arrives at work. His boss is concerned about his condition, but he still goes to meet a client along with a junior employee. Since his whole head is covered (I think he had a hard-to-remove knight helmet on at the time), he is thrown out by security, and the junior employee gets all the credit for the contract signed.

During the story he cycles through every mask imaginable, from normal carnival masks to festival masks to helmets (some particularly hard to remove, or eat through), to bandages wrapping his whole head.

He finally goes to the doctor, who tells him it’s a serious worldwide disease with no known cure. Only a few people across the world have it, and apparently he’s the first one in Japan. The doctor quizzes him about what he did with the discarded masks, as you can catch the disease by putting a mask on. He asks him to take responsibility for contaminating other people. The protagonist goes a little crazy, tries to force the doctor to wear a mask to prove his theory. In the end he goes home, and his supporting but spooked wife goes to live with her folks for a while. On the way home, they run across kids that have yokai masks on, and enjoy scaring passers-by. It’s probably those kids he met in the morning, who picked up the mask he discarded.

Next day he goes to work with his bandages mask on, and a colleague has already caught it, her kids too. His boss asks him to stop coming to work until he’s better, so he doesn’t endanger other people. Everyone in the office, and several people on the street, are wearing facemasks for protection. Protagonist goes crazy again, attacks boss and puts a mask on his head, then runs away.

On the way he meets the happy school kids again. They all have various god masks on, but when they see them in an Ultraman mask they all discard their masks and change into monsters to play-attack him. He asks them how they coordinate masks, but the kids of course have no idea. They just get what they want. He realizes you can control your next mask by picturing it.

People in the street avoid him like crazy. Mass hysteria is starting to build up, with people thinking the virus is air-borne and they can’t even be near him. There’s a wanted poster of him (with face all bandaged) on a koban. A police officer chases him, and he locks himself in a train station toilet to escape. While the police officer knocks on the door, he realizes he has his boss’s facemask in his pocket from when they fought. Looking at the mask, he takes his current mask off, and he’s now wearing a normal facemask like everyone else. The policeman apologizes for bothering him.

He now blends in with everyone else. On the train he sees his boss trying to hide himself. He has a stocking on his head - he has obviously caught the disease too. Boss thinks the protagonist got cured and asks how. The protagonist asks everyone else to move cars, then makes his boss do ridiculous things like strip naked and dance around in order to cure himself. He is of course arrested at the next station.

Protagonist now always has a facemask on, as does everyone else. His wife comes back, and surprises him by putting on his discarded facemask - her way of showing she stands by him. A year passes, and the newspaper titles gradually grow smaller, and people gradually stop talking about the disease. One day, he wakes up to go to work, looks in the mirror, and wonders why he has no mask on. The end.

The way I barely touch a book for weeks and then read 50 pages in Japanese in one sitting… (also, that part made me cry). There’s a bunch of words I still don’t know, but I’m too lazy to keep reading it with a dictionary lol.

I’ll probably finish the rest off on Monday night, since I have a maths exam that morning and need my whole tomorrow for that.

I’m not proud of myself… especially considering the unpleasant experiences I’ve had with soshage in the past… but I was baited by a recent character design and wanted to see for myself the game that made acclaimed visual novel writer SCA-DI write a damning thread about Japan’s own media industries after playing…

…of course, I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to refer to the game’s more recent chapters because this first part certainly hasn’t been very thrilling so far. It’s also not a very hard read either though it does use an unexpectedly odd blend of kanji and words that you wouldn’t expect from a mobile game-- indicative of these kinds of games being geared towards adults maybe? I know Uma Musume is no slouch with its eclectic usage of words either. There’s also the matter of it being a translation from Korean (and then back to Korean again actually iirc, to better match up with the Japanese voices) so it might feel a tad less natural, though I certainly can’t tell myself.

Anyway, thankfully you kind of run out of things to do with gacha after the first few days so I should be back to my regular reading schedule starting today. I certainly don’t want to be spending any more time on it than I have to.

Word of the Day: 一攫千金(いっかくせんきん) - getting rich quick, making a killing. The representative kanji here seems to be 攫 which means abduct/kidnap, seemingly implying that the easiest way to make big money is through ransom…

• こちょこちょ(.) = (on-mim) tickling
• しょうもない = cannot be helped; not worth trifling about. See also, 仕様(しよう)もない,   仕方(しかた)がない and くだらない.
• 様(さま)になる = to start being appropriate. Manners and stuff.
• 棄(す)てる = to throw away. No Furigana. Stronger meaning than 捨(す)てる, it seems.

We had our big friend meet-up for all of our collective summer birthdays last night, and I recieved two super cool japanese related things! Waaaaay back in like… april? march? I traded one of my friends a bunch of pokemon cards for a PSP, which has been collecting dust on a shelf since then. I haven’t had the time to tinker with it for my nefarious purposes (although it’s still on the list once I’m more comfortable reading visual novels without a text hooker!). But I’d mentioned wanting to play this ぼくのなつやすみ game at a convention we went to and I guess people just have really good memories So I finally have an actual game to play on it!

And also a children’s book adaptation of the wizard of oz, with some delightful illustrations. I flipped through it while I was waiting last night, and it looks probably about on par with 夜カフェ, maybe a touch harder, almost full furigana and the writing looks extremely simple (although, I don’t remember what level the book in english is, so maybe this is obvious). Will be fun to finally try out reading a physical book eventually!

Fatal Twelve (13.2k characters)

来たぁ！ New club starting, first time reading this. The first thing you always notice is the change in vocabulary and sentence construction and this is no different. @Daisoujou tagging you since you mentioned it, but yeah the first thing I noticed is that sentences in this VN are longer and more complex, they’re sometimes kicking my ass in a sense . The difficulty for me is just a small jump from 9-nine- or Zero Escape (JPDB ratings aren’t terribly accurate, but 9-nine- is a 4, this is a 6), or perhaps it’s just me adapting to the new style, but it’s once again probably the perfect difficulty right now for me to keep pushing forward (how do we do it? So far we’ve chosen VNs that one after another have been the perfect fit for me at any given time ). It also seems more description/narration heavy, which is probably what I need the most right now: long, more complex sentences. I’ve grown complacent with so much dialogue that I’m definitely noticing the change. My brain is not used to following a long string of characters and connecting all the syntax, precisely the reason why I wanted to read more in the form of novels or things like wikipedia, so this is perfect. The font is probably another factor that, while pretty, will get some days getting used to.

That’s great! Yeah I think it’s a noticeable step from the previous club picks. Personally with me reading 硝子の塔の殺人 right now, that one still has the longer sentences than this VN, so I’m pretty comfortable… mostly.

Speaking of, Day 29! I read the rest of this week’s section for Fatal Twelve, about 10k more characters (having continued a little more last night too). Mostly fine, though the last few thousand got into some complicated explanations of rules that sorta confused me. Nothing impossible, but it was a lot more like briefly returning to those days when things were hazier.

Also read a little bit more of 硝子の塔の殺人, both last night and then today after the VN because I didn’t mine quite as many words as I like to per day. It’s kind of a good feeling that I have to push myself to read longer because the words worth mining are slowing down. Obviously that’ll be material dependent, but yeah. Feeling not very overloaded while reading something I’m just starting is nice. I’m 53% through the book so far. The next two days will have me reading the other VN club pick, but hopefully I can slip in bits of the novel there too.

Seasons was about summer colors and tbqh I didn’t understand the descriptions

JoJo 40 was more of the Janken arc. I kept looking up words and getting distracted. Most of the words I was looking up were janken related vocab that I probably won’t use irl and that I could infer from the text, so I really shouldn’t have bothered. I really wanted to finish the volume, but I tried to go to bed at a decent time due to my plans today. It was in vain though because the timing didn’t work out because I couldn’t get to sleep. I should have kept reading until I passed out, whoops.

Nausicaa was… Well, I don’t think it’d be appreciated if I posted this in the book club, but Miyazaki’s choice to have Character A do a very dangerous task while Character B asks A for more information about thing x that B didn’t really know about was… bad storytelling. Like even a flashback would’ve made more sense than B saying repeatedly “Please continue your story.”

I’m hoping that I do my Ouran reading today, play Ukkari, work on my catalogue a bit, and possibly finish JoJo 40 today. It’s only 8am. I guess I’ll hop to it

Well, I’m…sort of back I expected the conference to throw me off a little, but not quite this much I didn’t read anything from the 19th to the 27th, between pre-conference stress, the conference itself, and post-conference exhaustion. I’m still kind of tired but recovering lol, at least enough to catch up with Flying Witch. I also need to catch up on some basic life tasks though lol, my space has gotten to the point where it bothers me and I feel a need to do something about it nOW so…if I read, I read, if I don’t, I don’t, I just really need to do some cleaning and reset my space a bit

Did you try searching in hiragana and/or do you have the context it was used in? My dictionary’s got 4 different ちかんs; none of them have a katakana entry, but something often/usually not being written in katakana doesn’t stop people from doing it for various reasons. Also, some dictionaries count hiragana and katakana as being distinct, so if you say come across “キツイ” and wanna look it up, it won’t come up with anything because it’s only got entries for “きつい” and “キツい” (as happened to me before), whereas with dictionaries that don’t distinguish between them, it doesn’t matter which kana type you use.

なんてねーけど

なんて just kind of expresses disdain or the like and can often be translated along the lines of “something like.” The ねー is of course ない, so he’s saying he doesn’t have any intention of (doing such a thing as) turning back. Without more context, I’d say that けど feels more like a “though” than a trailing “but…”
