About to start Fatal Twelve. It’ll be interesting to see how I fair vs 999 which I know practically by heart, since I didn’t even read the synopsis and have very little idea what it’s about. JPDB says I know barely a quarter of it’s vocab

Caught up with Konbini with the primer club. It’s a relatively quick read so that’s nice. Since I am definitely not 3 weeks behind on my manga reading,nope, no way.

I think we’ve all felt the sentences are pretty noticeably longer on average than past VN club picks, so there will be that to contend with. Also the very end of week 1 is really tricky but that’s been constant for all of us and definitely as much if not more related to the complexity of the material / way it’s presented. Just so you know what to expect. But you’ve got this!

A little over an hour thus far of Satori Reader and I am at episode 30 of 58 of the Jam story. Pretty okay for what it is. May do another 45 minutes and see how far I get.

I finished 穴らしきものに入る yesterday. The last story was, well, weird, once again. If we accept that the book is horror (something even the author is unsure about), then this one may have been the most unsettling, although still not exactly horror in my mind (but it could have been, if it continued in a certain direction).

The basic premise goes like this:

A couple are walking back from the supermarket along a long street that sees more car than foot traffic, when they notice an old vending machine with an 当たり付き (that’s a kind of lottery at vending machines where the display shows four numbers in a row after each purchase, and if it’s all 7s you usually get another free drink - I had to look at youtube videos to get it, having never been in Japan). This 当たり付き though, it doesn’t promise a free drink, but a free …baby (赤ちゃん一本プレゼント)!

Full story for the curious (full spoilers of course)

As the couple tries to make sense of what they’re looking at, an old lady comes along and they move aside to let her use the vending machine. They curiously look on, trying to see if the lady has any idea about the strange lottery, as she buys several orange juice cans in a row. In the end the husband asks her directly, and she says she knows all about it, as she actually won a baby many years ago. The husband keeps asking questions, unclear whether it is in genuine curiosity or in a mocking spirit - the whole concept is so hard to believe, after all. The old lady answers casually, as if it’s nothing all that strange. She won the baby when she was about the woman’s age, the baby came out the vending machine the same way the drinks do, it was a girl and she’s still doing fine, she has two daughters, one born naturally and one from the vending machine. The old lady offers the couple two of the cans she just bought, and they drink together. It becomes clear she comes here once in a while because she’s still hoping for yet another baby. We also learn that the couple don’t have any children yet, but they’ve been trying for one.

The woman grows increasingly angry at the whole concept of paying a few yen to randomly get something as precious as a baby from a vending machine, and in the end starts angrily arguing about it to the old lady, who leaves unconcerned. However opposed to the idea the woman claims to be, the vending machine haunts her thoughts. She finds herself secretly coming back to it again and again, spending all her money but never hitting the jackpot. The first night she goes back, she happens upon the old woman again - she’s in a car with a young woman she introduces as her daughter. The woman doesn’t ask which daughter it is, and just runs away from all the craziness. She walks randomly all night, and then spends three days in feverish dreams about vending machines and babies. The husband is quietly understanding throughout all this, and in the end she grows out of that phase, and a year passes without her getting close to the vending machine or having a baby, naturally or not.

Then one night she’s coming back from a school reunion, drunk and happy, and on her way back she finds herself right at that forgotten vending machine. She’s thirsty after all the singing they did, so she unconcernedly buys an orange juice. She doesn’t even look at the lottery numbers as she opens the can to take a sip, but then suddenly she can clearly hear a baby’s cry. In a daze, she reaches into the vending machine to find a can (I was expecting an actual baby all this time for some reason) that responds to her touch with baby voices. A policeman on a bike approaches, and I guess in order to not appear suspicious, she takes the can into her arms and even pretend-breastfeeds it while the policeman passes by. The can responds, and it’s like they’re forming a bond already, woman and can.

Then suddenly the woman gets unbearably thirsty (she never drank from that first orange juice after all). She opens the can and hungrily drinks it all up. It’s a clear liquid with no taste, if you’re wondering, with bits floating in it, like juice with the pulp still in. She feels woozy, and somehow heavy. She calls her husband, apologizes but says it’s his fault for pointing out the vending machine in the first place. A car passes by at speed, and in its lights we can see that she’s suddenly fully pregnant.

Next scene, she’s in an ambulance, and her husband is trying to make sense of how his wife is suddenly fully pregnant by discussing it with the paramedics. I didn’t understand why the ambulance, did the car run her over? did she faint on the street? No idea. Anyway, the paramedics say she wasn’t hurt, and she and the baby are fine. The husband just can’t take it all in. She wakes up and starts gagging. The husband looks into her open mouth and retreats in shock, as do the paramedics. One of them holds up a mirror so she can see what’s going on. A baby’s hand is coming up from her throat, tickling her tongue. The end.

I actually really liked this book. It’s been quite a while since I read anything this crazy. The writing was nothing special (in fact I believe this is the author’s only book), but the ideas in it are fantastically absurd and creative. Too bad he didn’t write (or at least publish) anything more, I’d be very interested to see what more writing maturity could do with such ideas.

And now I need to get back to my four (4!) book clubs. I started マリアビートル yesterday, but only managed the first section (one of three for this week). It surprised me by jumping straight into action.

Unsure whether I continue with マリアビートル today or not. I think I’m more in the mood for 予言の島 or 木洩れ日に泳ぐ魚 right now. As always, we’ll see.

That vending machine reminds me a bit of SCP-294 (which in turn reminds me of Seattle’s own weird SCP-like vending machine, which sadly no longer exists).

It’s actually not! Well, I think that specific SCP has probably been in games, at this point, but SCP was originally (and is still primarily) a collaborative horror fiction project, though the material has been used for the basis of video games and other things like that. So the wiki is the main form that it exists in.

I’ve been ultra busy with work the past weeks so I haven’t been updating here at all. I tried to at least keep reading a bit everyday so although I missed a few days I’ve made some progress with コップクラフト. Not enough to keep up with the club though.
Now that I’m finally on vacation I’m really hoping to step up my reading for August and I’ll be trying to do the daily updates once more. I missed this! And I have a lot of messages to catch up on on this thread woops.

was supposed to have some work to do today but it never materialised so my japanese reading was a bit more scatter-brained than usual. did this week’s ouran and idk if it was the text density or the fact that it’s been a while but this was a real struggle it didn’t take that long i just felt pretty drained by the time i was finished.

today’s nhk article was this one and today’s fate episode was フィオリト’s which was normal up until it went massively off the rails. feel like they mushed three different characters together and said yeah this’ll do

spent most of today watching my way through more y4, i’m now in tanimura’s section and roughly halfway through the story as a whole. the kansai-ben in saejima’s section was a little thicker than i’m used to but not too bad.

I read the last part in the colour book today about understanding colour. I was hoping it’d be about how colour was traditionally organised and explain the colour systems (赤系、茶系 etc.) a bit more, but it only explained about the Munsell colour system and how to read the hues/saturations and such.

Words of the day (more spoilers)

• 伸(の)し掛(か)かる = to lean on (shoulder); the weigh on (responsibility). From the verb 伸(の)す.
• 粟立(あわだ)つ = to have goosebumps. 粟(あわ) is a millet grain, and has Furigana. Described with ぷつぷつ.
• 立(た)ち竦(すく)む = to be unable to move, due to fear or surprise. See also just 竦(すく)む.
• 立(た)ち尽(つ)くす is to stand still in a daze, due to surprise or emotion
• 片膝(かたひざ)を立(た)てる = to kneel on one knee. Also 片膝(かたひざ)を突(つ)く.
• 踏(ふ)み込(こ)む = to break in / to come to grips (with a problem)
• 鼻先(はなさき)であしらう = to act cold and blunt towards. Similar to 鼻(はな)であしらう. There are also 鼻先(はなさき)で笑(わら)う and 鼻(はな)で笑(わら)う, which are supposedly more contemptuous and looking down.
• 初老(しょろう) = past middle age; early old age
• 持(も)ち物(もの) = personal belongings
• 銃把(じゅうは) = grip of a gun. Opposite side of 銃口(じゅうこう). The hammer is 撃鉄(げきてつ).
• 引火(いんか) = catching fire; ignition
• 山火事(やまかじ) = wildfire
• 生(い)き死(し)に = life or death. Confused due to seeing ～死(じ)に too much recently. Similar to 生死(せいし), though the problem is 死活問題(しかつもんだい).
• 路銀(ろぎん) = travel expenses. Similar to 旅費(りょひ).
• 逢瀬(おうせ) = secret meeting, especially a date between lovers. Not sure if they are in context.
• 逸話(いつわ) = anecdote
• 乗組員(のりくみいん) = crew (of a ship, airplane)
• 座礁(ざしょう) = being aground on the rocks. 船(ふね)が暗礁(あんしょう)に乗(の)り上(あ)げる in context, due to a storm. A ship literally strikes a rock and gets shipwreck, it seems.

I felt like a terrible cat parent after I arrived at the new house (a friend’s place where I have often stayed) with my cat and she hid under the bed the entire afternoon. Though I think it was to be expected. Massive move for her.

I read a bit on the plane but was fairly anxious, and did some reading during the day hoping she would come out. She finally emerged when I went to bed around 2130, and explored my bedroom while looking confused and a bit scared. But she did come lie on the bed purring so not all bad. This morning she’s explored more of my area - bathroom and study.

At some point I’ll let her out to the wider house, but there’s another cat here, so I’ll contain him in my friend’s area first. I don’t want to give her complete sensory overload either.

Halfway done with the challenge already! Haven’t read quite as much as I wanted to so far, but a lot of the stuff on my challenge docket is firmly on the harder side of stuff I’ve read, so it shouldn’t be a huge surprise I suppose.

Seasons was about about how 八月(はちがつ)'s old name is 葉月(はづき) because in the lunar calendar, it’s when we’d have the change to fall and in fall, leaves fall. August 1 was a long page about… I forget I’ll try to edit if I remember to check later.

Prefecture stories was 5 pages but only 3 prefectures. The information is still somewhat boring to me and I figured since most prefectures only get 1 page and not 2, I might as well keep up the pace I established on Friday. After all, there are only 9 prefectures that get a 2 page spread and of course there’s 3 of them in a row… so if I had read about 5 prefectures yesterday, it would’ve been twice the pages. Anyhow, I understand Chiba being about the airport since there are so many transportation otaku, but I was surprised that Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree were the focus of Tokyo… Like there isn’t anything more interesting there?

JoJo 40 and 41 are the alien arc. I’m a bit surprised because I really enjoyed this arc in the anime, but I’m not feeling it as much in the manga. It’s interesting though to see the dialect differences written out. Mikitaka tries his best to speak well. Maybe my interest will pick back up when they go to Rohan’s.
