So I missed 8 whole days of reading due to travelling. Finding enough uninterrupted time to read in Japanese was so hard that I soon gave up and just read an English book instead. At some point in the future I hope to be able to read Japanese books as effortlessly as I read English ones, but I don’t see it happening any day soon.

Anyway, I caught up with all my book clubs (Spooky Summer, Mystery, IBC), and I have two days until I need to get back to them again (and start a new one with the ABC). July is the month I read the least so far in 2023, and it looks almost certain that I won’t finish any book this month (an 8-page short story doesn’t count). That’s what reading 4+ books at the same time gets you, I suppose. But that’s okay. Right? Right.

actually managed the rest of the section of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２ that i started yesterday! much shorter and more manageable than previous ones have been. this game’s gonna make me really sad, isn’t it, i can see it coming. as an aside i really like how they’ve put a lot of edgeworth’s mannerisms and speech patterns into gregory and how they contrast with von karma’s. it’s small but it says so much about their relationship. there was so much formal and humble language tho

today’s fate episode was ロジーヌ’s SR one which ended on a cliffhanger, surprisingly. looking forward to not doing part two for like, a year nhk articles were these two easy ones on japan’s population drop and the weather forecast. watched some more y4, this one seems to be more voiced than 3 but not as much as other entries so there’s still some pure reading sections.

I read the first line and was like “ah, OK, difficult but not toooo bad” and then the second and was like “is that Japanese? ”

I tried looking into this line a bit more, because I really couldn’t figure out quite how the second line was working no matter how much I tried . Something about it felt like it had to be referencing something specific, and indeed, it does look like it’s using language pretty similar to a part of the 万葉集

I think the other gods are the only ones who talk like this though, and then there’s one character later who might be a bit quirky but I haven’t gotten to him yet to check

I just had my birthday, and then the very next day a graduation ceremony. I missed my first gradiatopm due to covid, and I’m glad. This time I stepped on my robe going up the podium and almost kissed the floor which was foreshadowed by having been seated in chair #13 before the event. With school out of the way, I can hopefully dedicate more time to Japanese (and work).

Even with all that I managed to read ~3 volumes of バガボンド, the story just culminated one of the big arcs and I just couldn’t put it down. However now I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, slowly but surely I’m reaching the end of the manga with only 9 volumes and 78 chapters to go. If I keep a good pace I will finish it by early August which would make it 2 months for 37 volumes. As much fun as it is I’ll try to avoid binge-reading like that in the future, I spent more days on this manga than I’m ready to admit.

I started reading あさがおと加瀬さん, a manga I had bought a couple years back before I took a long break from Japanese. It’s an easy and sweet story, and I felt like I wanted a lighter read these days. But I’ve been keeping up with a daily ritual of 2 pages of コンビニ人間 in the morning before work. I’m also glad that I was also able to invest quite some time in studying grammar today.

Day 27! Been a little distant but I’m gonna pop in when I can. Today I read about 10,000 characters of 硝子の塔の殺人, so I’ve definitely sped up! Needed this whole time to get in my mined words too. I’m a little distracted much of the time but it definitely takes me a few hours to do this, haven’t properly timed it. So actual reading speed is still rather low but with the sort of time I can devote, in 15 days I’ve made it to 48%! Not bad for a 500+ page novel. I may press on to the halfway point later because there’s a chapter break, we’ll see. Getting through this long book in a month wouldn’t be so bad. But tomorrow is the start of the new VN club so I’m back on double VN reading, each one going at near 25k characters per week, so I’ve got a lot of planned reading ahead of me to work through. Still doing small reads of Pikmin, too.

ふらいんぐうぃっち : 2 chapters

Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher : 1/2 chapter

Finally got back to Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher. I’m behind on my Japanese reading goal, and possibly in irreversible red on my general fiction reading goal. Maybe if I can get in the groove again. The biggest reason I paused this long was that I stopped halfway through a chapter following the bad guy. In general, any writer is likely to loose me in a bad guy chapter.

To bring up an example I’m somewhat ashamed off but also weirdly proud about… I didn’t read the 7th Harry Potter book when it came out because I got about half a chapter in, which is a bad guy chapter if you hadn’t figured that out already, and then I got a phone call from a good friend. We talked for four hours—yes I remember how long because it kinda became a personal legend—(a common occurrence back then; and still happens a couple of times a year now, but not as much because I moved close to the only person I still do that with), and then I never picked up the book again. Until last year. (To be fair, I did intentionally learn spoilers from the ending, so I knew some of who lived and died at the end. I didn’t think to ask about some things (Tonks and Lupin ))

Anyway, also read two chapters of Flying Witch. Really enjoying reading something where I don’t care too much about comprehension. I really do need to realize that two different reads that challenge me at the same time is not the best for me. Ah well, will figure it out or I won’t (talking about book clubs I’m in here).

So it looks like I’ll start next week 2 weeks behind on most of my book clubs, excluding what I read today. But I’m making progress in the dictionary. And should have lots of reading time next week.

And I finished volume 13 of シャドーハウス! I’ve been pacing it until the new volume was released, then forgot. Bought it last night - then immediately realised I’d bought the black and white version. So just bought the colour version too. I wonder if I can get Bookwalker to refund the other one?!?

Seasons was about 草(くさ)いきれ, or the strong smell of grass in summer because it’s too damn hot. Of course there’s 人(ひと)いきれ too.

JoJo 39 was great. This is the part where they investigate the house and I loved how we got to see Kira’s dad talk about him. It wasn’t as clear to me in the anime, but in the manga, it’s easy to see how his words drip with love for his son. Fascinating and very rewarding to read. I only got one chapter into JoJo 40 but this one was also a treat. We see Kira taking Kawajiri’s place and I love how Araki took a page from Psycho with the subversion of the bathroom. A place that’s usually a spot of personal sanctity where you can cleanse yourself is turned into a place where Kira has to shroud himself in the lie that he is Kawajiri (at least for now). I’m also really surprised by Hayato’s first appearance. It’s so different from later ones, although Shinobu seems to be the same so far in the manga and anime.

For 10 min stories it was not a 10 min story for me. This next one is about a dog and has 4 parts for some reason. I can’t tell if it was actually difficult (there is some archaic Japanese) or if I was just too sleepy when trying to read. After all, when I read JoJo at home later, it was a lot easier. For now, I think I’m going to put it on pause and finish Prefectural stories (which I started with the book club but never finished) since I think I have more stamina for it now and it should be a nice stepping stone back to 10 min stories. I’m thinking of reading about 5 prefectures a day and then returning to 10 min stories.

deepl gives me “Of course, not everything you see is what you get.”

I’m having trouble with where the negative actually applies, along with the use of 言う here.
This が is a “but” with the context of the next bubble.
The とは double particle is a bit confusing to me as well.

More literally it’s, “Of course, you can’t say that what you see (the things that are visible to your eyes) is everything, but…”

The と is simply the quoting particle, and the は is there to add emphasis or contrast (the note on とは as a quoting particle in Shirabe Jisho says “indicates contrast or adds emphasis to a negative statement”)
