・わたしの幸せな結婚 6 (36% → 44%)

Was a long, but good day at work. However, new bus route and the lack of information on where we were, along with me not being familiar in the area, sigh just not good for reading time.

On a different note, it is the 14th in Japan, so book 7 is released already :eyes: :sparkles: I’ll try my best to finish rereading book 6 first. (Sorry book clubs :joy: )

@Naphthalene There’s going to be a book 8 in March next year (and an OVA included as a bundle). Might be good to hold off until then if you’re working on backlog. Dunno yet if it is going to be the last book in the series.

Good with some spice in the language, right :joy:

This is my first post I’ve made in here aside from my home post. I’m excited today because I’m now 400 pages in 新・三等重役, only 200 more to go! This one has taken me a long to read. I used to look up all the words I didn’t know, but now I’m just doing the best I can to comprehend what’s happening without worrying about it too much. (And I guess I’ve probably a stronger grasp on the vocabulary used in the book after reading it for so long…)

This book has six different stories in it and I haven’t really enjoyed the past few stories, because they haven’t been about the protagonist, Sawamura, and his “old miss” secretary, Shoko. While reading it last night, he was thinking about 接吻ing her, haha. Now I’m invested and I feel proud to be reading such a long book.

I’m thinking, in the future, ebooks are the way to learn new vocabulary with, because it’s easier. Unfortunately, I keep buying any Japanese novel I can find, so I have quite a collection I’ll feel guilty about not reading…

I’m down to 10 books and I’m 2/5 through one of those, so I could technically make it my next book

The book I am reading right is part of a series, though, and I own the next 3 volumes as well, so I might just keep pushing with the series first.

9-nine- Episode 3 (7.3k characters)

Well, started and finished planning last week for the club (for a couple weeks at least). I can’t say much here, this thread has eyes :eyes: .

I can’t even say I’ve finished another VN because the episodes are part of a single work :joy: . But anyways that’s Episode 3 done. Next episode is the last one so you will stop seeing new 9-nine- threads in about two or three months. Sad ;-; .

Hello! Got some little reading done yesterday and today, I’m happy with it give it’s so hot, I couldn’t focus to read much today… Europe is melting down… summer is here for real

I finished the first 8 sections of ハサミ男 and am finally in Chapter 1 (yes, you read that right). I decided to look at some reviews to refresh myself on why this is so popular and I guess it’s a major どんでん返し book, how exciting. And there has already been a twist! So far not a bloody/graphic book, although I have content warnings for my eventual review regardless.

I want to say that is mostly front-loaded and then it’s just referenced again as relevant. Once you’re in the thick of it I think it will go much faster, excluding 碧 occasionally going on tangents that consist almost entirely of book titles and author names.

July 13th!

Today I read 3 pages of Volume 1 of the Orange light novel. I was planning to read a bit more today, but I reached the end of Chapter 3 so it seemed like a good place to stop.

I have a really busy weekend this week, so my reading over the next three days will probably be a bit less than usual - but I’m still planning to read every day!

Missed a couple days due to lack of motivation… Back at it though :). Got a new kindle from prime day for an upgrade (from my super old small kindle) and man I’m not used to the size of paperwhite  so awkward to hold in my hand… If someone thinks it gets better later let me know :man_running:.

Another slow day on the reading front, but did lots of kanji writing practice after work! Made it through week 4’s コンビニ人間 reading, so that’s from 10-13% - hopefully today I can power through week 5’s and then be caught up! Once I’m there, probably some more 名探偵コナン and giving 龍ヶ嬢七々々の埋蔵金 a try.

The special needs teacher at my school has given me an open invitation to join their Japanese classes since we’re studying around the same level of kanji, which is… slightly embarrassing but I’ll take it lol

「見える子ちゃん」の第47話を読みました。
Stopped for a few words and to remember a few kana words that I don’t see (since I haven’t been reading). Really good to remember that I can more or less “read manga” in Japanese, although I’ve hit the wall hard on others XD

If anyone has any suggestions for other manga around the same level, please let me know.

Day 13 Check In
This check-in is completely arbitrary but I wanted to talk a little about what I’ve read thus far in the challenge.

Earthquakes

A couple of days ago, I read an NHK News Web Easy segment about 災害(さいがい) preparedness. (That's an emergency/disaster.) Specifically, I read the bit on 地震(じしん) (earthquakes!) I used to live in Los Angeles, so I was familiar with the things you're supposed to do. I was curious to see the comparisons.

Everything was basically the same, from what I can remember. I don’t remember ever hearing anything about what to do in your car, but I learned that in Japan you’re supposed to stop your car (on the left-side, where you should have been driving!) and turn off your engine. Also, don’t lock your car doors and make sure you know where the keys are. Makes sense. In contrast to Japan, I don’t recall ever seeing such cute and frantic illustrations for earthquake preparedness.

あいちゃん

I decided to read a few Tadoku readers. 「楽勝(らくしょう)」! Despite being for children, I thought the stories about あい and her family were so sweet! I knew most of the words, but it's sometimes hard to realize what you're reading when you don't have the kanji! I try to read these aloud as well. I stay true to their "intention" and don't look up the words -- I let the ambiguity sit.

Behind the Supermarket, Smoking With You

I jumped the gun here and read… 3 pages. My pace is terribly slow, so I’m judging the level of ambiguity I want to tolerate. I’ll probably do one read through quickly, then maybe go back and examine some finer grammar points.
It’s so dang charming! And I’m old, so like… I get it… What an excellent selection for the book club. It officially starts in 2 days and I cannot wait!

You know what’s so super cool?
Getting to enjoy media that I would otherwise NEVER be able to consume. I mean, wow.
This whole language learning thing has its perks after all.

Seasons :parasol_on_ground: … I forgot what today was about…

I read Nausicaa :bug: yesterday until it stopped making sense to me. I was hoping to finish off the whole volume, but all the lore really tired my brain out. I was also really surprised by the thing Kurotou did, like wtf, I didn’t expect that.

Honestly really really great, the only reason that I’m consistently reading adult-fic. I got a cheap secondhand one that had blemishes bc I thought getting a tablet just for reading is ridiculous XD. But it’s actually really nice, here are the main things I enjoy if it helps to convince you to join the bright side…

  • Quick dict lookup with long press (granted it’s not as good as say yomichan and the precision isn’t superb, but now I don’t have to hover over my laptop at all times to read and that’s huge to me ) you can download any dictionary to use as well
  • Send any epub/pdf/etc to your kindle. I was able to download light novels I’m reading for free online and read it on kindle :dancer:
  • Kindle unlimited for Japan (has a lot of manga/light novels/magazines/fic in it and it’s like ~$8/mo. Has a lot of types of things but not everything, good for exploring)
  • Cheap books (with yen being so cheap to usd nowadays you can get a manga for like $5 and since it’s digital no shipping or need for storage as well which is a god send for my tiny apartment)
  • Easier on your eyes, esp during night time and stuff

Tbh the main thing for me is now I can read on my bed without carrying a laptop around… If that’s your needs as well it’s def worth to get one, just don’t pay full price on the newest version imo. No big difference between used, old versions and the newest as long as it’s working (just don’t go too old, anything above 7th is fine, current is like 11th I think). I’d say if you can snatch one for like $30-40 it’s a great deal, used or new. Also most books are in vertical alignment but you definitely get used to it really quickly so don’t be scared - I know I was T_T

Some things to keep in mind though:

  • Needs a bit of setup. you have to create a separate amazon.jp account. And if you alr have a kindle account in non-japan country you’d need to log out and login to switch over which is a pain… I only use it to read Japanese stuff anyways so it doesn’t bother me. There’s a guide on here that goes over how to create a .jp account and how to buy books and I had 0 issues, just gotta find it if someone needs it :eye:
  • I don’t recommend it to someone who needs to look up a lot of words per page when reading. You can either adjust your reading level or wait until you get more used to reading Japanese before buying one bc the dict look up can be a pain if done a lot…

Transforming a light novel (i.e. 小説家になろう) can be a bit of work and took me a while to figure out. I can write a guide on this if people are interested :p. But yes overall 100% recommend~

definitely not paid by kindle :p.

I love the letting ambiguity sit XD. Except most of the times I do it bc I’m too lazy to actually look it up

I got the newer PaperWhite that came out in March. I love the size because its the size of a bunko book! My old (12 years old) one was still functional but it bezels were so big and it would crash after so many quick page turns to the point it needed to reboot.

Yes I think I have the same one :smiling_face_with_tear: it’s so lovely all in all. I think it’s me coming from a 6" one to the 6.8" it is now and my hands are NOT used to that, got me sore after a couple pages… Hopefully I get used to it, if not oh well I’ll just wait for a sale to go back to 6" lol. But yes definitely an upgrade overall… even the screen is soft to touch :face_in_clouds:
