• 寄生獣２: 78% - 83%

I was going to push myself to finish this volume today, but it’s getting late and I have work in the morning.

Some interesting JP things from today’s reading:

• 風呂 in katakana for some reason? (フロ). I’m 90% sure that it’s supposed to be 風呂 anyway based on the context.
• Came across grammar I just learned today it was がたい, and with a verb used in an example sentence I’d written down (信じがたい), so I didn’t even have to stop to think about what it meant!
• 大したこと(は)ない (“trivial; not amounting to much”) once again giving me trouble. Why do I always forget this is an expression? I always look at it like 大した+ことはない when it’s really more like 大したこと+ない. Which makes way more sense b/c 大した is an adjective and that ことはない grammar point is only used with verbs. Maybe now that I’ve written this out it’ll stick in my head better!

July 9th: [Home Post]

Almost 1/6 of the way through the challenge! Lots of new kanji tossed my way today, but I think I had a much better time with grammar. I finished about a chapter and a half today, which was much more than I thought I was going to be able to get done after a length Anki review. Overall, the plot still isn’t anything crazy, but the characters are cute together, and I’m a sucker for teamwork/friendship themes.

I said I didn’t have any plans and was just gonna read today, but then my friend convinced me to go play pokemon go for the community day and hang out for a while after. It ended up being a pretty busy (but fun!) day away from japanese. I did set my go language to japanese a while back, so that technically counts for something

got a new friend today!

• ラブひな ch 2 - natively only has combined reprint volumes, so I’m debating whether to read the 2nd one I have as well just so I can mark it off there. So far I’m enjoying it enough to finish reading the series probably, but not sure if it’s one that I want to hang on to after I finish or not

I noticed that too It sounds like we were many interested by the recent discount and going to read it (it was also one of the few mangas I read as a teenager so I’m super keen to revisit it in Japanese!) so I’m thinking we should submit the regular volumes. こよい – I don’t think I’ve ever read / heard it before?

This showed up in chapter 2 of Ouran High School Host Club. It was in a rather formal/fancy narrative section.

And barely started Ouran - I’m going to have one more try then abandon it. I think it’s probably just not my thing, but any fans want to give me good reasons to persist?

How far did you get? And what did you like/not like so far? I love Ouran, but nothing is for everyone, so a bit hard to guess what might sway you either way.

It is wonderfully fun and goofy at times. It is character/people focused, and heartwarming when the host club tries to help other people with their relationships/hardships. Later also focused on the host club members and growth for them. At least going by the anime that started happening more further on. And there are also several chapters/episodes that are just kinda goofy/silly fun.

While I’m driving a lot I’m falling back to reading シャドーハウス mostly, which is a problem since I’ve nearly reached here it’s up to! But I missed the new week starting so I do now have a few other things to read.

Plan from here - do this week’s readings. Aim for 2 dictionary entries per day, but don’t feel bad if I can’t. Then attempt Ouran again when I have brain space.

Yeah, it has barely gotten started. The first couple of pages is set up to get into Haruhi’s state of mind. The next few pages after that are the ones that gave most people trouble (me included), but the story picks up right around there too. The introduction pages are a bit rough. It might actually work better in the anime than they do in the manga because the anime would give it more motion/make it feel more active, I guess.

I’d definitely encourage you to at least read the first chapter before deciding. Even half (first week of the club) should give you some idea of what you’re in for, but obviously the whole first chapter would be better. Then chapter 2 is a pretty good representative what a more normal chapter/episode will be like.

And finished さくらいろの季節! 292 pages, baby Managed to get fairly wholesome happy endings for all of the characters, even 一伽, the one who tried to stab 直終, and a few long-overdue conversations and decisions. This one was easier overall than my last book (there was so much sports talk in スマイル・ムーン and I could not have cared less), although it had a lot more flowery language at times - pun absolutely intended - and the characters were more likable, so I’m counting it as a win!

Next order of books came in, and wow, コンビニ人間 is tiny. Like, it’s barely thicker than the doujin novel I bought for a laugh. Definitely caught me off guard lol, but anyway, that’s my next target! Read the first half-a-page or so of 龍ヶ嬢七々々の埋蔵金 and was pleasantly surprised at how much I was understanding, so may tackle them simultaneously once I catch up with the コンビニ book club.

Also bought the 漢字検定スマート対策 game for the Switch and did some writing practice! As expected, my writing is absolutely abysmal and it assigned me to the second-lowest level to work on lol but gotta start somewhere!

Since I’ve been busy I’ve tried to at least read a page (in arbitrary ebook measurement) of コップクラフト so I don’t completely fall off the reading wagon. Hoping some things irl are clarified so I know exactly how busy I’m going to be this month. The heatwave isn’t helping either but I still have hopes of having more time for reading…soon…hopefully.

Very busy today, but managed to read chapter 10 pf ふらいんぐうぃっち. I really love the atmosphere of this manga, just from reading I start to feel relaxed. It’s just so cute!

I read three pages Parasite Eve and some pages in manga magazines. In Parasite Eve I finally reached the part I stopped at. The book is full of biological terms but still pretty easy to read but over five hundred pages long it will take quite a while to finish.

did some more of 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２ and didn’t quite finish part two but i’m getting there. i’m having a great time with it so far, the energy and pacing feels good (even at my snail pace…). 王(おう) is probably the most difficult character to follow so far thanks to a combination of strange sentence structure and slightly more obscure vocab. but! on the plus side, i now feel a lot more comfortable with how はたして is used than i did before!

attempted to read an nhk article but i couldn’t focus on the page at all so i went back to nhk news easy and read this one on high cases of this particular sickness. will do better tomorrow.

did ドロッセル’s fate episode which was probably the most contrived ‘come join our group’ one i’ve seen so far, it was really bad she’s also voiced by an actual child (or she was a child at the time), rather than an adult pretending to be one, which is rare.

also finished watching majima’s side story in k2. these people really know how to yell! onto y3 next!
