You might want to mark it as a spoiler because we don’t get to this point until about 40% in
So far they had 3 mysteries. And while the first one was ok (how come Chitanda got locked in the classroom?) the next one about girls borrowing a book every Friday was so anticlimactic. But even that wanes in comparison to the mundane situation: “senpai didn’t want others to know he was smoking”. So it all wentdownhill. I don’t care what the uncle told little Chitanda that made her cry…
Actually the one about smoking was the only one that felt like a big deal to me, since he would be expelled for that and, since high school isn’t mandatory in Japan, good luck finding a new one and passing the university entrance exams. That could break that guy’s life. Not that I personally care about it (since, meh, it’s his fault), but it’s still a big deal (for him).
It’s illegal for people under 20 to smoke, so it will depends if the police gets involved or not. If they do, the parents and the teacher in charge may be heavily fined and even go to jail. If possible, the school will keep things quiet though.
The minimum would be to exclude him for one or two weeks, assuming he would not do it again. That being said, he has implemented an elaborate plan to not be found out, which is an aggravating factor, so it could be a month or more (again, depending on the school). In any case, the teacher in charge of the club is probably in troubles if it’s found out.
Started chapter 1 of カラフル!I felt like I read a lot, but then realized it had only been like 5 pages haha. Taking a break, but will read more later to get to my goal – which is half a chapter everyday. 16 chapters total means a little over a months worth of reading.

Extremely new here, but this sounds like a great first thread to be a part of! I’m still in the early stages on WaniKani (though I have lived in Japan so recognise quite a lot without knowing the exact readings etc.) so I’ll just be doing NHK News Easy and some graded readers!
On topic:
I have a 60 day streak going on Bookmeter, so this thread is a good motivator to keep that streak going for the summer! I’m aiming to read at least 20 pages a day: that way I should be able to read an average-length LN in two weeks. I’ll probably read more, but keep this as the bare minimum in order to not get too stressed out on days I’m not feeling it.
I’m pretty sensitive to cigarette smoke, so I’ll take any law that restricts it . Having to smoke at specifed places seems reasonable for me (which I think it’s how it is in Japan now?). Just that punishable by jail seems a bit too much. But I guess underage smoking and general smoking laws are a bit of a different topic altogether.
In the case of the teacher, he is supposed to prevent the kid from smoking (and generally make sure the club room is used probably). That’s not illegal if he didn’t know (he was just incompetent and will have to face the consequences).
I was thinking about the case where the kid was stealing cigarettes from his parents. You are supposed to check that, so that’s still falls under your responsibility. Probably not jail, but you’ll get a fine at least.
Still, some older acquaintance is probably more likely indeed.
Anyway, it’s fiction, so who knows.
Omg whaat, how did I miss this thread! I’m doing a lot of reading now for JLPT, but I plan to also continue reading manga when I have time and energy /o/
I like how this chapter flows naturally in the next chapter, where I read ahead a bit in anticipation. They all addicted to the milk. Guessed correctly that 低脂肪乳 meant low-fat milk. Those are the small victories.
