📚📚 Read every day challenge - Summer 2021 🏖🏖

Summary post

My main reading today was 鬼滅の刃 - read three chapters which took me to the end of the 4th volume. I was a little worried because vol 3 introduced some new characters that I found fairly annoying, but I’m slowly starting to warm up to them. Except from when 善逸 is a complete creep to women, bleh . Characteristically, the volume ended on a double cliff hanger. I should stop reading for the day (at least on my iPad) but it sure makes it hard!

While I’ve not recorded it, I also got distracted during work and read a bit of a random visual noveley type game that I downloaded onto my phone cos I figured out how to. I did zero research into whether or not it’s any good (it seems like a very silly dating sim type thing with the concept seeming to be that you’ve gone back in time and are flirting with a bunch of Japanese historical figures), but it is voiced (except from the protag) which is pretty nice. It made me realise how little Japanese history I know (because pretty much all of the characters that were introduced the MC is like “oh yes, I know about them! They are famous! I learned about them in school!”…and I have heard of none of them haha. Prompted by that, I have downloaded ねこねこ日本史でよくわかる 日本大事件 (which I had bookmarked a while back after seeing it reccomended on these forums) onto my kindle to try to learn at least a little bit more (plus it has cute cats!). Might try a couple of pages tonight and see how I find it

Day 43 :ballot_box_with_check:
Satori Reader: The River Sanzu, Episode 17.

Getting close to the finale, only 3 episodes left then starting a new story! There are a few long ones that look interesting but also very intimidating. These series I’ve read have been 12, 27 and 20 episodes, but there are some with 50 or even over 100; those feel like quite a commitment. Which is not bad, if the story is good the more episodes the better, it just feels juuuust slightly suffocating, because that’s a hundred days of daily commitment supposing I read on episode per day. I guess I could read two series at the same time, but I don’t know how I feel about that, I kinda prefer just focusing on one. But anyhow, new series in 3 days  I don’t know which yet.

Day 43: July 13th
What did I read?: レンタルおにいちゃん Vol. 4 (finished the volume)
How much did I read?: 220 pages (5 chapters - the whole volume)
How long did it take me?: 2 hours and 8 min

BYE MY HEART :sob: I went and read the whole darn volume because I literally could not stop. (It only took me 2 hours, is this a new personal speed record? I’m not sure, but maybe lol) From the start of the volume it did not go how I expected it to go. Honestly Kazutaka’s backstory broke my heart, I mean I agree with the other characters that it doesn’t really excuse his treatment of Kanami, but damn, that poor boy. I’m so happy he made the choice to change and get help.
Also, if anyone was wondering, I did clean my apartment today, finally

July 13th からかい上手の高木さん chapter 6 page 7 (3 difficult panels, 1 noop, 1 easy).

Once again huge thanks to this club as it lead me to do more than I intended.
I was actually thinking of taking a break as I was quite exhausted and my arm was in pain, but then I had a little bit of time earlier in the night so I did one panel, and then since I had a little more time I wrote down the second panel but didn’t translate it yet. Later in the night I decided it would be quick to translate it since I already had it written down, and then once I was there and in the mood I decided to just keep going.

Sheesh, I’m bearly begun the Pokemon Koko novelizatiom(3 pages a day) There are several words I don’t know but most I know! Much onomonepia.

I have found about 4-5ish Kanji not taught on here, according to the back it’s an middle school level book. I’m doing surpsingly fine for now. I’m not at the poimt where a unknown word is found out by context but I think that’ a native level ablity.

Summary Post

Had bad insomnia Sunday night and blasted through quite a bit (for me anyway… :snail: ) of ありす19th. Also poked around the bookshelves and tried properly translating a couple pages of 火の鳥 which was surprisingly easier than I’d expected so might continue with that.

Unfortunately I keep forgetting to sit down and read! I think I have too many “do a little of this every single day” projects and it’s hard to keep track of them all…

I finished my reading early today! Finished chapter 5 of 僕はブルー (haha thanks @Belerith :sparkles:).

We’re getting deep enough in the story that I started tearing up. This doesn’t mean the book is actually sad tho–Did I mention to you guys that I’m capable of crying during a heartfelt commercial??
Oh! And I have a couple of words/readings I can share this time :notes:

Today's words:
  • Unusual readings:
強張こわばる = To stiffen (an expression or posture)
かす = to season, to enliven. In the book they used it to describe a heater “enlivening” the stench of unbathed/urine soaked people. :grimacing:
  • Phrase:
かたしから = Absolutely every bit, everything from A to Z.

Forbidden Scrollery (2), 9 more pages, 16%
Just when heroes thought they’ve discovered who steals sake from villagers, story gets a little more complicated.

Phrase of the day:

似ても似つかない 【にてもにつかない】

  1. [adj-i,exp] quite unlike; not bearing the slightest resemblance

Also I’ve noticed that reading Forbidden Scrollery(1) turned to be productive. When 煙 came up in WK’s reviews, I recognized it much faster than other kanji.

・Read ch. 2, part 1 of 冷たい密室と博士たち. Am two weeks behind book club schedule, but I’m sure I’ll manage. Today was mostly chill. Feeling ready to read more tomorrow :eyes: :books:

Summary

July 14 3 more chapters of 鬼滅の刃. These were mainly fight scenes so pretty easy reading, took about 50 mins. I read some of ねこねこ日本史…last night and will probs read more tonight but unsure how to record as reading very unhurriedly in 2 page sections. Guess will just record whenever I finish a chapter (if there are even chapters? not sure)

What did I read?: しまなみ誰そ彼 Vol. 1
How much did I read?: 32 pages (1 chapter)
How long did it take me?: 51 min

Wanted to try out this series, since I heard it features an ace character. I was a little confused by this first chapter, but I think some of that was maybe intentional? (One day I will get better at distinguishing between confusion due to poor language skills and confusion due to the author being intentionally confusing/vague lol). But I like 誰かさん already.

1Q84 Book 2: 24 Pages, 1hr 25mins total. Boy, chapter 20 was damn difficult. Took me so long to read through the portion of 平家物語 that ふかえり was reciting. Was my first experience trying to read old-ass archaic Japanese and boy it hurt the ol’ brain.

Yesterday I started volume 1 of 聲の形. I read around 20 pages no idea what this manga is about but it seems there is an anime movie. The manga must be really popular.

@Aislin How do you like Rune Factory 5? I think I got a bit spoiled on those kinds of games by trying some of the lower quality ones and then playing Stardew Valley a lot. But I do enjoy playing them when well done.

@kimera You are reading probably my favorite manga, ありす19th. Well I might now have read enough full manga series to really claim a favorite, but anyway. I love it. I hope you enjoy it.

I only read a bit in my book, but instead actually spent much more time reading through the terms and conditions of registering for my vaccine. I was afraid to miss something

Hmm, I might be the wrong person to ask then, because I am a rare case that didn’t like Stardew. I tried two times already and I consider a 3rd because of the internet pressure, but wasn’t hooked on so far.
Meanwhile, I usually enjoy 牧場物語 entries…
So which farming games do you consider lower quality and which do you consider well done?

As for Rune Factory 5 itself, I think it’s nice. Very similar to the 4th entry, although I played 4th a long time ago, so I might forgot some details already. Dungeons are a little too simplistic, sometimes it’s basically a straight line. Characters are fine. Plot is straightforward, but it makes for a nice excuse to do all this fighting and plowing, and the gameplay itself is very fun and addictive. I’m close to 100 hours already, so… Oh, but the fps drops are awful. There are actually two modes, one with “dynamic graphics”, where the graphics gets uglier when the Switch can’t keep up with the “action” (where the said action is sometimes just walking around). (And I use the pretty one )

In other news, I finished 4th HameFura! I mentioned it already in the extensive thread, but it worryingly started to really slow down. There is some one bigger event which gets solved within a volume and all the relationships are nearly frozen in the status quo. :slightly_frowning_face: (there are some changes, but it doesn’t really change anything in the end)
But I already bought all the volumes published on the sale and I’m not stopping. And it’s my iyashikei anyway.

13 pages of Forbidden Scrollery(2) complete, 24% of total volume is done. I planned to read less, but this chapter resolved the mystery of who stole the sake.
