tried to read a chapter of don’t say mystery, key word tried. turns out chapters are 80 pages long and every page looks like this:

so my brain gave up about 25 pages in. idk what it is about this that’s so much more intimidating to look at than a novel page, but here we are. also read this nhk article on a potential measles outbreak and this one on the closing of vending machines in tokyo thanks to the g7 summit.

words that stood out: つとめて (early morning. was metaphorical here), 冤罪(えんざい) (false charge, false accusation), うざい (noisy, annoying), and ポンポン (pom-pom) cos it’s always fun to say.

This could entirely just be the fact that almost all of my reading experience so far have been high school-era romance/SOL novels but the series definitely doesn’t have any particular amount of slang that deviates from the norm enough to give me pause.

I’m still interested because there are a lot of appealing threads here, but I hope soon we see a little more action. Also, this new character was introduced, and the moment I saw their bio, well…

Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar : two entries

It is a bit obvious when Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom dropped, isn’t it? (If you somehow hadn’t heard already, it was May 12th. xD)

So yeah, I’ve been spending all my free time in the game, more or less. It has this wonderful quality of feeling like I’ve gotten nothing done in the game despite playing for hours, not in a bad way. Don’t get me wrong. But there are so many little things everywhere to do, and any one thing doesn’t take long, and leaving them behind would mean I’d have to sweep the area again later, so I just do them. And somehow it takes forever to get to the point I was actually aiming to go.

Thereby it feels like I’ve gotten nowhere, but also throughly enjoyed my time “doing nothing”. xD

Anyway, picked up the dictionary finally yesterday because I’m falling behind. Ouran High School Host Club starts this week, such poor timing, lol. I should have been more careful with the poll options. Also this is next to last week of Loopers, if I want to follow the time schedule I set with a friend. Last week I caught up but didn’t get current, so now I am a chapter behind again, and soon to be two chapters.

I will need to convince myself I can put aside some TotK hours to Loopers instead. It is gonna be a lot harder than I want it to be. TotK is kicking ass so far. So dang good.

Also, how about I promise to post the Kiro pictures I’ve been promising for almost two months this weekend, just to top off my task list. Not to mention the garden/yard things that need to happen…

Don’t mind me, struggling to not ONLY play a game as a 33 year old. The struggle is real.

May 18th — ふらいんぐうぃっち2. Wholesome continuation to an excellent first volume, but something felt a bit off — I felt I was looking up twice the amount of vocabulary compared to the first one, even if “just to make sure”.

If my favorite new word from the first volume was 方向音痴ほうこうおんち, this time it was 泣き上戸なきじょうご.

Also, I loved to see another instance of 振り仮名 vs. 漢字 double meaning:

Seasons was about breathing techniques to combat 五月病(ごがつびょう).

I finished the volume of JoJo, but I felt so exhausted that I actually went to bed around midnight last night. Yesterday was a mixed bag at work but the whole week’s been great although really busy. Today I’m proposing a mostly solo project to my department at work. When I pitched the idea to individual coworkers, they said it sounds good, so hopefully I can get it approved! It’ll mean more work and responsibility for me, but I’m happy to take that on.

見分(みわ)けがつく I did guess the meaning right in context, but seeing it as 見分(みわ)けがつかねーんス threw me off lol.
陸橋(りっきょう) land bridge, these are super common in Japan. The きょう reading also threw me off, but earlier this week, I had looked up Kintai Bridge and seen it written as Kintaikyo Bridge about half the time so that might solidify this less common reading for me

(seems like I’ve passed around 30% of the game so far so it’ll likely take me another ~2 months to finish.
But I like the balance of dialogue and walking around / fighting, it keeps me engaged and not getting tired so I’m sure I can keep going and finish it )

I FINALLY UNLOCKED TELEPORT!!! I’m sorry, I’m so happy to finally have this, the map is huge. Why does it take so long to get teleport in this game? This makes gathering materials so much easier too, I wanna cry I’m so happy

I read another 10% of パパ活女子 and it’s officially gone from “neat, new cultural info!” to “I am bored, all these chapters are saying the same thing”. I’m also a little bit peeved at the author’s judgey attitude towards the 茶飯女子* because they’re apparently ‘doing it wrong’. He then proceeds to talk about how many of them are doing it due to being in dire financial binds.
I don’t hate it, but I’m giving it a stern side-eye, alright?

*茶飯女子: women who engage in being sugar babies without sleeping with their sugar daddies.

tried to read a chapter of don’t say mystery, key word tried. turns out chapters are 80 pages long and every page looks like this:

I wanted to like that manga cause I loved the show but I also found it kind of exhausting to read. For me it happened more in volume 3 (I think?) when there was a ton of dialect speech and the plot of the current mystery didn’t interest me much

I seem to have the most awful luck lately with English novels. This latest author is overly fond of comma splices and sentence fragments (outside of where they have their use) and doesn’t know the difference between “berth” and “birth.” Are editors not still a thing?

• ch 11 of 夜カフェ, which was about 13 pages
• Harvestella got here today, so I switched over to that. Apparently this game has multiple bad endings and one true ending. Well, that’s not intimidating at all lol. Anyway I’d gotten used to the hit-and-roll (hit from one to three times depending on enemy, roll away out of attack range, wash rinse repeat) fighting style of Eternal Radiance, so going back to this one where there’s no way to block (not that I’d use it anyway because I’d forget and also I’m terrible at it) or effectively dodge, and uh. How the hell did I not die in the demo lmao. And I don’t fare much better trying to attack from a distance as a mage. I also unlocked a third job but I can’t figure out how to switch to it

優男 (やさおとこ) [n.] man of delicate features; man of slender build; effeminate man. Seems to map to “prettyboy,” though idk how it compares to 美少年 or 美青年. I should look them up on Goo but I’m too tired today

Grammar Dictionary : 3 entries

I thought I was further behind on the dictionary than I was, because now I only have one entry left for this week, so in a way I kinda caught up yesterday (we roughly read one a day, schedule-wise). I hadn’t expected that.

Well tomorrow starts new book club weeks. Ouran Host Club!!! (I won’t be bothered to write out High School each time I suspect. So there you go. xD)

didn’t go back to don’t say mystery cos i really wasn’t feeling it, so instead i went through a couple books/manga in my library and read the prologues/first chapters of each, not really looking anything up unless i had to to understand what was going on. was a nice little break, and i’ve got a better idea of what i want to read next now. oh, also read this nhk article about a japanese dormouse being released back into its natural habitat.

what i read, with some thoughts

durarara (LN) - was surprisingly easy, i flew through the prologue. will probably get more difficult when more stuff about celty starts coming up but i definitely feel less intimidated about it now, and i had a lot of fun. really like the double page at the front, with the main cast. sets up the dynamics perfectly.

86 (LN) - harder than durarara by quite a bit, this is more what i was expecting of a LN in terms of difficulty. i got more into this than i thought i would, even with the abundance of technical jargon and kanji i don’t know (i think most of them were plant names).

メタモルフォーゼの縁側(えんがわ) - ohhh i really liked this. read a full chapter then stopped, but i think i could have read the whole thing in one sitting. good atmosphere, and the art is cute.

弟(おとうと)の夫(おっと) - homophobia and grief warning for this one, but i read a full chapter and liked what i read. not sure how it’ll handle the themes it’s put down, but it seems to be treating them with care so far.

葬送(そうそう)のフリーレン - didn’t read a full chapter but enjoyed what was there. this kind of story, of the aftermath, is always interesting to me.

妖怪結合(ようかいアソート) - just kind of glanced at this to get the vibe, read maybe eight pages? was more comedic than i was expecting.

「GUILTY」 as part of the free volume of young king webBull - again, was just trying to get the vibe, read maybe 15 pages. i’m terrible with names and this has twins swapping places, so this is a recipe for disaster but the art’s nice. might be nsfw, didn’t get that far.

made in abyss - i think this was the least i read? i’m intrigued, but not itching to pick it back up. the colour pages at the start are gorgeous though.

the only word that really stood out was わかる as 判(わか)る! only other place i’ve seen this was bungou stray dogs, so i’m not quite sure what that says about this guy. (from 弟(おとうと)の夫(おっと))
