For the last year or so, I’ve mostly ignored trying to figure out what the なん/んs that appear towards the end of casual dialog actually are disappearing. In the beginning because I didn’t have enough knowledge to actually figure it out myself, and later because it is often clear from context what the person is saying.

During today’s chapter in Flying Witch though, I decided to actually pay attention and try to untangle what なん and ん actually was. Was it の or る or るの? What about んな? Is it るな or another ん with the sentence ending な? Well, I can report that I think I managed to figure out each one.

So I think I decided to try and fully comprehend these things at the right time. I know all the most likely culprits that they are, and I comprehend the language well enough in general so that I can call it comprehending instead of guessing which of the options that ん is.

Btw, yesterday was a weird reading day. Felt like I didn’t understand anything, even if it were the same characters and speaking style that I’ve gotten used to. Maybe because I was stressing about exams. I’m not stressed now though. Tomorrow’s exam is just a five minute discussion with teachers about a random case. I just need to feel at peace and more on the excited side of nervous.

As @MissMisc would say, everything is going to be 大丈夫 :3

• ふしぎ駄菓子屋 銭天堂１: 53% - 61%

Finished up two chapters I’d started earlier: chapter 4 of ふしぎ駄菓子屋 and chapter 9 of 寄生獣. I really liked both of these chapters of these books!

ふしぎ駄菓子屋: aww the resolution of the taiyaki chapter was so sweet, I’m really close with my brother so I love it when stories have healthy sibling relationships. They had a little argument (relatable) but made up and now they fish for taiyaki together! Honestly this is a good book in general. All the stories are fun so far! Except I really didn’t care for chapter 2, the one with the animal gummies/cookies/whatever it was (I don’t remember)? I was a little confused for that one

寄生獣: At first I was assuming 新一’s mom’s hand was injured because ミギー did something to it, since it’s the right hand and 新一 and ミギー were just talking about parasites transferring from one brain to another, plus ミギー going on his “walk” that morning. But I misunderstood and didn’t realize it was an old injury until the flashback happened. Then I went back and reread earlier parts of the chapter and went ohhhh I get it now. As an aside, I really like how involved the parents are in this story! Usually in stories with teen protagonists the parents are totally clueless and/or basically nonexistent which can be kinda annoying, so it’s refreshing to see them actually noticing something’s up with their kid!

Today I read Chapter 70 of Mitsuboshi Colors, and then read the last 3 chapters of Volume 1 of Chi’s Sweet Home. I don’t think I’ll continue with Chi, since its so low in text density that reading it felt weirdly like cheating.

There’s already not enough time in a day, but getting up at 11 am by accident made it worse

Seasons was about the origins and practices of Mother’s Day in the UK and US, which was interesting. It also said that Americans traditionally give white carnations but pictured red ones.

I was able to do all my other studying, but I didn’t feel like I had time for both JoJo and Dracula. I ended up going with JoJo. It looks like I read a lot, but I swear a lot of the pages are fighting or wordless stare downs. Keichou continues to be an ass.

Hopefully I have more time for Dracula today, but idk if I’ll catch up through today’s reading.

36 pages of 花馨る雨の名を, finishing ch 5 and leaving off on pg 173. We’re now past the halfway mark! If I weren’t so tired all the time, I would definitely be reading more of this—maybe two chapters a day instead of one. There are definitely still words I gotta look up and bits I gotta take some time to puzzle out (and some I can’t figure out), but overall it’s a pretty comfortable read for me. Which is unexpected for an author I’ve never read before. Like, any other (JP) novel, I would not be reading anywhere near 36 pages while this tired lmao

did the first part of the middle section of case five, which was a bit of a struggle. idk if i’m tired, the increase in unknown words, or if the length of it was getting to me. i think i’m starting to get why people call this game longwinded.

words that stood out: くまなく (all over, every nook and cranny. also 隈(くま)なく), 食(く)い違(ちが)う (to not match well, to be in conflict, to be contradictory), 薙(な)ぐ (to cut down, to mow) cos the kanji’s fun, and 志半(こころざしなか)ば for having an absurd amount of furigana

(this one is a much more warm and orangey brown than 水柿 colour)

黄櫨染こうろぜん - Wax Tree Dye
(this one wasn’t just forbidden for general commoners, this one was absolutely 絶対禁色. This colour was pretty much the most royal of all browns, as it was used for the Hōō bird patterns on the Emperor’s ceremonial dress. The dyeing process used wax tree as a base and was pretty complex, and it appears to have a reddy tinge, or a yellow one, depending on the light level.)

赤朽葉あかくらば - Red Marcescent / Red Litterfall
(朽葉 (or 朽ち葉) means ‘decaying leaves’ but there isn’t really a singular word for that in English, I guess ‘marcescent’ might be the closest, but that’s specifically a type of dying leaf rather than just dead leaves in general, but it sounds pretty cool so… anyway, 朽葉 is the brown colour leaves start to turn to from the reds and yellows of autumn. It was a popular brown base for colours in the Heian era - it says that there was 48 different dye varieties of 朽葉 to choose from for clothes. This colour is the reddy hue version of 朽葉.)

Days 36-37 Progress:
推しに熱愛疑惑出たから会社休んだ 二巻 - 36% → 50%

For a light novel that’s supposedly about being an idol, there seem to be a startling dearth of idol activities and an abundance of sappy romance moments instead… can’t say it’s been very interesting so far.

Word of the Day: 逐一(ちくいち) - one by one; in detail; minutely. I don’t really have a good reason for choosing this word, it just irritates me so much that 逐 looks so much like 遂 and I keep misreading it, dammit

Words of the day

• ここんとこ = recently. From ここの所(ところ).
• しょい込(こ)む = to carry responsibility on oneself = 背負(せお)い込(こ)む
• 干涸(ひから)びる = to dry up completely (a river). The second Kanji is from 涸(か)れる, like an alternative on 枯(か)れる for water.
• 生身(なまみ) = in the flesh; a real living (person)
• ジリ貧(ひん) = gradually becoming poor; gradually becoming worse. It’s ジリジリ + 貧乏(びんぼう).
• 軛(くびき) = constraints; yoke (to put on a horse; cow) = 頸木(くびき)
• 罪作(つみつく)り = heartless; deceitful
• 小振(こぶ)り = small-sized; a small swing
• 流儀(りゅうぎ) = way of doing things; style
• 小心者(しょうしんもの) = coward. 小心(しょうしん) is cowardice, though in Chinese is just “be careful”.
• みなし子(ご) = an orphan. Can also mean person without friends, colleagues. Also written 孤児(みなしご) which can be read 孤児(こじ).
• 男前(おとこまえ) = manliness; handsome man
