名探偵コナン vol. 3 (p. 41 - p. 92)
Today I read three chapters. I want to try to finish this volume while it is still free on bookwalker.
And because I was curious, I took the time while I was reading today. Each chapter took me about 21 minutes (21, 22 and 20 minutes to be precise). I don’t know whether this is slow or fast, but it’s fascinating that they all took around the same time.

I don’t know if I have that much to say. My brother’s visit that was supposed to happen have been delay (yes, again) for good reasons, so I will get to play Tears of the Kingdom on release day!!! Woop! Woop!

Reading a whole chapter of Loopers today was nice, although it wasn’t a very long chapter at 6000 characters, but it feels good to know I can read that in a reasonable amount of time. Also the story is clearly picking up speed. Only 5 chapters left.

The Practice by Seth Godin is really good. Can recommend this non-fiction book.

I guess wk finally caught up to when I reset to level 15 to try to get rid of the crazy review stack, ah well. I came into the year hoping to be better about doing wk, but kinda lost interest pretty quickly. Ended up having more fun just reading, and then using anki for vocabulary SRS when/if I needed it. seems like now is a uhh… “volatile” time to talk about the effectiveness of wanikani as a learning tool, so I wont.

Read:

• アオハルライド ch 0 (“unwritten”) - I know I said I wanted to work on some harder stuff… but the first 4 volumes were 60 yen on bookwalker and I had some coins to spend I remember enjoying about the first half of this series (right about where the anime cuts off), but not enough to buy it physically. There’s a bunch of other stuff on sale/free 1st volumes until 5/31 from this magazine for it’s 60th anniversary. So if you need a nice shoujo manga fix, now’s the time apparently! These are longer chs (shoujo/shoujo leaning tends to have longer ones, I think), in the 40-50 page range and 4 chapters/volume.
• aDoBJG - I just did the Bs today, but it was fun going through the readings and then noticing some of the stuff in the wild. Saw a good ばよかった sentence basically right after finishing that section

I came into the year hoping to be better about doing wk, but kinda lost interest pretty quickly. Ended up having more fun just reading, and then using anki for vocabulary SRS when/if I needed it.

Fwiw I failed at trying to learn kanji in isolation (I was doing Heisig and some other stuff) but through reading the characters and readings stick. I think knowing enough radicals to be able to quickly distinguish similar kanji & look them up quickly is valuable, but beyond that… well, I’m club “read books”

Wellp it’s summer now. Freaking 92° (33°C) today, but at least the humidity dropped before it got that hot. Augh, I’m glad I work mornings. (Although I did still have to go out in the afternoon today, bleh.) Augh, I am not looking forward to when it starts getting that hot before noon.

Also my cooling towel thing molded even though they’re not supposed to be “effected” (affected) by mold or mildew. I’m leaving it to soak in a bleach-water solution for… I dunno, overnight, I guess? It doesn’t say for how long to do it. Even after washing my hands four times, they still smell faintly of bleach (which is supposed to smell like lemon but doesn’t)…

• 32 pages of 花馨る雨の名を, finishing ch 3 and leaving off on pg 102. I’m now a third of the way through the book! If I continue to read a chapter a day, I’ll finish this in 9 days, which is 1 day quicker than Summer Cider, though it is about 40 pages (a.k.a. about 1 day’s worth lmao) shorter. Well, I do still have 3 more days of work this week to we’ll see.
  I remembered 明後日の方向を向く from seeing it in the dictionary when I looked up 明後日. Now why can’t I remember words and phrases I specifically look up because I’ve come across them.

Well that’s some long furigana

I’m glad this isn’t a book that always fits the furigana only over the word in question and puts space around the word if the furi wouldn’t otherwise fit. It does it a bit with some compounds since it centers the reading over the corresponding kanji, but nothing anywhere near as egregious as this would be.

…Or squish the furi so tight you can barely make it out, for that matter. That was hell in HQ, but at least in that it was mostly English words with kanji for meaning, so it wasn’t as bad as it coulda been. (I’m still dreading coming across a kanji with a lot of strokes that you can’t make out for being bolded, with furi you can’t make out for how squished they are.)

• the article 「扇子（せんす）」「扇（おうぎ）」「団扇（うちわ）」の意味と違い since I was wondering if there was any difference between 扇 and 扇子. Turns out, technically, “扇” refers to any sort of hand fan and 扇子 and 団扇 are both types of 扇, but in actuality, “扇” is really just used to refer to folding fans and 扇 and 扇子 are considered the same thing with 団扇 being separate.

I’m really enjoying reading this. I’m hoping to binge a bit more tomorrow. I might end up buying a few of the manga after the free trial expires. I knew I loved this series, but I forgot how much. Some of the cases I remember, others I don’t at all and it’s a nice surprise.

Finished the week 1 reading for ロジカとラッカセイ and the week 2 reading for 告白！There are so many words I need to look up in 告白 on every page, but the story is immersive regardless. Coming from かがみの孤城, it’s so action-packed — in the first chapter alone so much has happened. I wonder whether the other chapters are similar or it slows down from here.

In this current challenge I’ve had a lot more motivation to read than usual, which is great!

陰キャギャルでもイキがりたい！- 1-6話

Kinda slipped into debauchery the last week over being away and getting really into a game for the first time in a while… basically did nominal amounts of reading every day. Now that I’m at hope and back at work, maybe I can stick to a more consistent schedule…

陰キャギャルでもイキがりたい！is a fun little manga I picked up the other day about a couple of off-the-beaten-path gyaru-style characters who just take it easy and discuss random things. It was extremely difficult to parse at first glance because of the deluge of gyaruspeak-- I can’t remember the last time I struggled to read something so much… lots of fun seeing the characters just give strongly opinionated rants about random topics though.

Word of the Day: 反骨精神(はんこつせいしん) - rebellious spirit. Why are we going against bones? Maybe it’s because we’re rebelling against established structure, aka the skeleton?

Oh you should go for it if it’s tempting! I started reading Ruri Dragon when I was in level 7 on WK. Reading it is a struggle but so worth it because I’m having fun and it’s rewarding.

I’m pretty sure that this manga is also very above my level but I was super intrigued, so I thought I’ll just give it a go and drop it if it gets too overwhelming.

Loopers : chapter 14
Grammar dictionary : one entry, へ
The Practice by Seth Godin : a few pages (as usual)

Another chapters of Loopers today, the last really short one. After this they are all between 8k-10k characters, so I’ll probably need to read each chapter in two sessions. And now there are only three chapters left. So I decided to figure out how far along I am: 79%.

Very nice.

I would have read another entry of the dictionary, but the next one was が (へ counted as e), the subject marker, and just in case it decided to hide some more nuance for me, I didn’t want to shortchange it.

And while airing the cat, I read a few pages of The Practice. It is finally getting a bit warmer outside. It was a whole 9 degree Celsius. If only my porch was actually on the sunny side it might have been quite nice. But with the right clothes it was fine.

I do look forward to it being even warmer though so the snow on the lawn can disappear and I can comfortable stay outside longer. When that happens I’ll start letting my boy roam leash less. He’s getting so big, you guys.

Also, promise I have taken loads of good pictures, so when I finally transfer them to the computer I’ll share kitty pics, promise.
