Seasons was about a star constellation and I found it pretty boring. It made a lot of references to stars that I’ve never heard of. Idk if I’d be more interested if it were stars I’m familiar with. The story explanation for the name seemed pretty dry.

I read JoJo last night until I got bored of reading about Joseph whoops. There was some Lisa Lisa backstory that helped keep me going. Only 50ish more pages to the epilogue and then moving on though. I look forward to Part 4!

Wow, I am really liking ウスズミの果て so far. I’ll definitely finish it up by the end of the weekend. Still a quick read, but there’s getting to be a bit more text.

Just a few days ago I mentioned 鬱 in my study log since I just reached level 50, and what do you know, I ran into it in 999 today!

I read the first chapter from John and Friends in Tokyo (satori reader). I don’t know why I did, I think I was about to give up on the streak but instead, read something completely random to keep myself motivated. And it worked!

The first episode was a conversation about shopping and what kind of clothes one likes. I did not expect it to be fun! The conversation was casual, and between two friends so I knew some vocab already and learnt a bunch of useful ones!

Here are some interesting words and/or phrases that I found. This was a fairly tricky article.

1．面倒（めんどう）＝troublesome

Context: 日本人がアメリカを旅行して面倒だと感じることの一つは、チップの習慣である。

2. 運転手 （うんてんしゅ）= driver

3. 宿泊料（しゅくはくりょう）＝ hotel charges

4. 請求書（せいきゅうしょ） ＝invoice

5. 含まれる （ふく）＝ to be included (in)

6. 計算（けいさん）= to calculate

Context: だいたい宿泊料の十パーセントに決まっていて、請求書（せいきゅうしょ）に含（ふく）まれているので、自分で計算（けいさん）しなくてもよい。

7.物価（ぶっか）＝ commercial products

Context: 日本の物価が太鼓とはアメリカでも有名だが、チップの習慣のないことは意外に知られていない。

• バリバリ(.) = (on-mim) energetic; eager / crunchy; crispy
• ケンケンパ(.) = hopscotch, a children’s game
• じれったい = annoying. Probably from 焦(じ)れる / 焦(じ)らす.
• 頼(たよ)りがい = trustworthy = 頼(たよ)り甲斐(がい)
• 面目無(めんぼくな)い = being ashamed. 面目(めんぼく) means honor.
• 取(と)り柄(え) = merit; good point

• 立身(りっしん) = success in life. There seems to also be 立身出世(りっしんしゅっせ).
• 本丸(ほんまる) = core of a castle; the center part
• 醜(しこ)の御楯(みたて) = the humble shield of our Lord. First Kanji is from 醜態(しゅうたい) and 醜(みにく)い.
• 加護(かご) = divine protection
• 鉾(ほこ) = a pike; a halberd (矛(ほこ)). The Kanji also in 鯱鉾(しゃちほこ).
• 跋扈(ばっこ) = rampant; overgrown (of domineering, tyranny)
• 烈火(れっか) = raging fire. Similar sounding is 劣化(れっか) (= deterioration).
• 猛(たけ)き勇者(ゆうしゃ) = brave hero. The reading also seen in 猛々(たけだけ)しい and 猛(たけ)り立(た)つ. Not sure about 雄(お)たけび. (common root?)
• 灰燼(かいじん) = ashes; complete destruction. First Kanji is just On reading, but I don’t think I have seen this one. Second Kanji sounds like 微塵(みじん).
• 青天(せいてん)の霹靂(へきれき) = bolt from the blue. Now, it is very literal to English.
• 形振(なりふ)り構(かま)わず = without regard to appearance (形振(なりふ)り). No Furigana makes it harder to read.
• 矢面(やおもて)に立(た)つ = to bear the brunt of (an attack, criticism, etc.). Like being in the front row army, and got arrows fired at.
• 意(い)に沿(そ)う = to comply with one’s will

The characters in this English novel just keep getting more obnoxious. I’m barely halfway through it. I may end up dropping it, honestly, curiosity be damned.

I stayed up waaay too late tonight working on a new fic lol (rambling)

It’s 2.43 of course, and it’s actually slightly (but not really) based off a part of that English novel. One of the characters is afab and genderfluid, mostly between guy and gal and sometimes a bit of both, and there was a bit where it was looking like it could possibly go where he wasn’t actually sure if he was partly a guy or not because he had a crush on the MC who’s gay (it didn’t go there, and apparently they had actually kissed once and they both decided it was never happening again lol)

It’s not exactly the way it could have been with her, since my brain landed on Ochi, and whenever I see him as being genderqueer it’s always as a binary trans guy and never nonbinary in any fashion. So it became that he always felt different from the other girls and identified as a tomboy, but in high school, instead of joining the girls’ volleyball team, he joined the boys’ as a manager and insisted on being treated as one of the guys, and he liked that (got more gender euphoria from being perceived as a guy than as a masc gal) and so decided to come out, at least to the team, as a trans guy. But later on he starts doubting whether he actually is a guy or just convinced himself he is one because of his feelings for Subaru, who’s gay in this. Usually I have him as bi—well, usually I don’t specify, but I still see him as bi—but it’s important that he’s gay in this. I also don’t know how out he is, since it’s only relevant that he is and Ochi’s one of the ones who knows, and not exactly how wide the sphere of people who know is. It could be different if it were from Subaru’s POV, but it’s Ochi’s, so.

Anyway, Subaru likes Ochi too, and he tells him that even if he does end up not really being a guy, well, he (himself) might be bi. It could be that he likes masc people and not just guys specifically. He doesn’t see his feelings for Ochi going away anytime soon. It doesn’t comfort Ochi any to hear though, at least not at the time that Subaru says it. He’s too upset just then. But eventually he accepts it and he accepts that it’s all right to take his time figuring it out and it’s all right no matter what his identity winds up being. Gender is hard sometimes.

That’s all later on, though. It starts not that long after Ochi comes out to the team, with Subaru mentioning over lunch that the school rules say nothing about students having to wear the uniform corresponding to the gender they’re registered as, and one of the other guys saying that his older brother went to Fukuhou too and was about Ochi’s size and he’s pretty sure they still have his old uniforms. I landed on Yuuhi, but that was before I double-checked heights and it turns out he’s only 4 cm taller than Ochi—and that’s in 3rd year. Ochi hasn’t grown any since middle school (sure, he could be shorter if he’s afab, but I like to think he’d be 168 cm regardless of agab, and if he’s afab he’d dream of growing at least a little bit taller when he goes on T, but then he just. doesn’t. It would be funny), but Yuuhi almost certainly has, so they were probably closer to the same height in 1st year. If they kept the older brother’s uniforms, they’d probably turn into hand-me-downs if the younger brother was about the same size.

Subaru canonically just has an older sister, but I wouldn’t want it to be him anyway. Though my initial thought was Kouhei, I can’t do any of the 2nd-years since this works better in 1st year. Jin was also likely around Ochi’s size in 1st year. I’d originally dismissed Jungo and Asamatsu because it felt weird imagining either of them with an older brother, but I guess I’ll have to choose one of them after all… Or maybe Yuuhi could be shorter and a size too small? 4 cm isn’t that much, although Yuni grew 5 cm between 1st and 3rd year so it’s certainly within the realm of reasonability… Augh.

This is definitely gonna be on the longer side, especially for me, if it ever gets finished. I still have to figure out much of what’s gonna go down though. I also don’t want the angsty bit to be a large part of it, though of course it’s most of what I have right now lol. I want it to mostly be Ochi finding ways to be comfortable and happy as himself. So more of his friends/teammates being supportive, and gender euphoria when he dresses and/or is perceived as a guy. Maybe he cuts his hair too. In canon, he kept it short when he was an athlete and let it grow out after he made the switch to manager. When I write him as trans, I like to imagine him cutting his hair real short after realizing he’s a guy and then figuring out he likes it better a little on the longer side. Maybe he had it short before, but it was a girl’s short hairstyle, and he gets it cut in a guy’s short style, then realizes that while he likes it, he does actually like it better a little longer, just in a different style than he wore it in while he was living as a tomboy.

• アタック!! vol 9. Either my impression that teams who both have mostly-white uniforms, even if the accent color is different, can’t both wear them when playing each other and one wears their white uniform and the other their “black” is wrong, or this is something else I’m questioning about this manga.

Why are both their uniforms white

Granted, Kakegawa’s (bottom) are white and red while Seijou’s (top) are white and presumably green (the illustration on the back cover of this vol is of their ace in his tracksuit, which is white with dark green sleeves)

The last game, Ikezato wore their “black” uniform and Kakegawa their white.

New girl in town As an optometry student, I appreciate how the author has included the fact that albino people struggle with their eyesight because the lack of pigment in the eyes leads to scattering of light in the eyes and it’s hard for the visual system to fully develop.
