I really haven’t been reading as much as I wanted to this month. But apparently today I’m making up for that!

ふしぎ駄菓子屋 is pretty easy, it’s a nice book to get into the reading mindset before starting something harder. Sometimes the hardest part about reading isn’t the actual reading, but being motivated to read (and that’s been my problem lately). 極主夫道 used to be my book to get me into the reading workflow, but ふしぎ駄菓子屋 has been a nice replacement while waiting for the next volume.

I’m trying to catch up to the 僕が愛したすべての君へ club, it’s not so much that I can’t read this book at the same pace as the club, it’s more that I haven’t really set aside time for it. But today I finished week 5’s reading and started on week 6.

I also randomly came across the manga ウスズミの果て, read through the entirety of the free preview on bookwalker. From what I gathered from chapter 1, it’s a post-apocalyptic story about a girl searching for survivors of the “結晶病” (crystal disease). There’s not a lot of text so it’s been a quick read so far. The font is a bit too small though it makes looking up kanji pretty difficult. A few places with a weird futuristic font too and/or katakana where there should be hiragana, but it’s mostly readable. It’s not on Natively yet, but I requested it, and I’ll keep reading once it’s been added.

Oh, also I’m removing モブサイコ１００ from my currently reading list because I barely read any of it and I’ve decided I’d like to start it later (once summer starts).

Despite what I decided a few days ago about not reading in English for a while, I started one of the unread novels on my shelf yesterday. I hate it, but I’m too curious about what will happen/has happened to abandon it. Rarely have I so hated that a book was long.

• ひだまりが聴こえる. Even though I know now that Enojun is Taichi’s official voice, it’s hard to switch over from Tattsun lol. I’ve read this twice in English before and used his voice because Taichi sorta reminds me of Takao. Maybe after I start listening to the drama CDs it’ll get easier.
  I forgot it was the official English title from the author/publisher, and not the scanlation group, that has the translation of ひだまり as “sunspot.” It’s not the same thing…

Some vocab of note:

ツキが回る (ツキがまわる) [expression, ラ五] to have fortune come one’s way; to become lucky. That ツキ is actually 付き.

Today I read chapter 113 and 114 of チェンソーマン. It was such a pain because the first few pages had a lot of new vocabulary about fish and starfish and such I don’t feel like I improved that much in reading after all, it’s still intimidating seeing a lot of Kanji and Hiragana on a page

read another two chapters of わにとかげぎす which resolved the threatening notes through the door plotline a lot earlier than i was expecting so it’ll be interesting to see where the manga goes from here. i think there’s two chapters left, then i’ll decide whether i’d be interested in reading vol 2. also poked around in the saying dictionary i have, with the one from today being 雨垂(あまだ)れ石(いし)を穿(うが)つ (slow and steady wins the race, or droplets wear away the stone). granblue hasn’t been forgotten i’ve just not had time to devote to it

Days 20-21 Progress:
声優ラジオのウラオモテ 一巻 - 0.09% → 60.58%

Pretty insane couple of reading days. The day before yesterday in particular. I usually knock out about 20k characters on a good day but that day I read close to 50k! It feels good kinda just being able to concentrate on reading without getting immediately exhausted for once.

The novel itself is also pretty fun. It’s a yuri series about two incompatible seiyuu working together, this time much longer than the others I’ve been reading (eight LN volumes are out so far). One of those ‘hate eventually turns to affection’ kinds of dynamics where the 70% of the interactions in the first half of this volume has just been slinging insults at each other. Excited to see how their relationship changes from here.

Word of the Day: 目(め)が眩(くら)む - to be dizzy; to be disoriented; to be dazzled; to be lost in (greed, lust, etc.). I like that the kanji 眩, dazzling, is used with the reading for 暗(くら)い to give the impression that you’ve been dazzled to the point of losing your vision.

I feel a lot of respect towards people who can put down something they realize they don’t enjoy (or can’t enjoy yet), actually. In my opinion it’s not 失敗 at all (if anything, it’s flexibility ^^ - trying smth out and seeing whether it suits you) - I hope you don’t feel that bad about it~

Yeah it’s basically guaranteed reading and listening practice every day. I’m almost caught up to where I was when I put vanilla down (because I felt it was unproductive to my Japanese learning 3 years ago). So I’m happy to see how much I can comprehend since I really don’t remember much when I played in English.

Girl Friends : ca half of chapter 2
Dictionary Basic Grammar : ある2 and あとで

Finished off last week of the dictionary reading. So will have to double up grammar points at least once this coming week, but I think I’ll make a habit of doubling up when I don’t feel like I learnt anything new.

Also read about half of chapter 2 of Girl Friends. It is so weird how little stamina I have for this manga so far. It isn’t hard for me. It is interesting enough, and yet, I only manage about 10-12 pages (each chapter is about 25 pages if I remember correctly), and then I feel like I need a break. I’m guessing it is just me figuring out the speech patterns and getting comfortable with it.

I’m guessing I’ll probably speed up naturally after a while, or gain a bit more stamina to at least read a chapter at a time. That would be ideal in my opinion.

名探偵コナン vol. 1 (p. 166 → p. 174)
I finished this weeks section of the Ruri dragon book club. This weeks chapter was pretty much slice of life. And Ruri being half dragon/half human was not important at all for this chapter. For me, this made this chapter rather boring. I know many of the book club members enjoyed this chapter espacially because it was so slice of life-ish…but I guess I am just not in the mood for slice of life stuff at the moment
And then I proceeded to read some more pages of Conan. It was a step back from the last times I read Conan, because I had to look up quite a lot of Kanji/Words again. But only a few pages left until I’ll finish this volume

After posting the summary post yesterday (last 5 days in one post), I feel like posting daily again. I still have to see what’s the best way for me…

・薬屋のひとりごと 5 (31% → 35%)

I get restless reading this volume, it’s so stagnant compared to the previous one, most of the plot has been taking place at the same two buildings/rooms so far with no indication of change. But it’s not boring at all. I’m eagerly waiting for plot to go in the direction I’m hoping for. It’s a form of tension that leaves me hanging and I can’t help but continue reading. Did I mention I like this series? It’s been very enjoyable so far.

April 22nd!

Today I red chapter 19 of Komi Can’t Communicate, which was the final chapter of volume 1. It featured several Japanese games, so I ended up googling most of them to see videos of them being played to make sure I understood the rules that were explained in the chapter. My understanding was generally ok-ish, but seeing the games in action made them much easier to understand than just reading the descriptions!
