December 11th!
I read the second half of chapter 1 of この美術部には問題がある today. Like other readers I found the content a bit questionable… we are only one chapter in though, so I’m going to give it a chance - perhaps its a rare occurrence, and there have been plenty of other manga I’ve nearly dropped at the beginning for similar reasons but then gone on to enjoy.

Trash continues to be trashy. I mostly read so much because I was stuck with an upset stomach and couldn’t do much else. I’m hoping to finish it this week, but we’ll see how that goes. It is only 100 pages though… If I find the time, I could definitely get it done in an hour or two.

Words of the day
- げに = really; very. Somewhat similar to 現に, 誠に and 実に, but old style.
- 最中 = in the midst of. Also, 最中. I wonder about 最中, but this one isn’t common. (There are 最早 and 最寄り, though.)
- 晴れて = officially
- 齢 = at the age of; age
- 老衰 = senility
- 血みどろ = gory; bloody / desperate
- 如意棒 = a rod that goes by one’s wishes. The one that 孫悟空 uses.
- 降誕 = nativity. Well, alternate way to 降臨.
- ちりあくた = worthless thing; trash. Also just あくた. Also written 塵芥 which can be read 塵芥 (= waste; refuse; trash).
- 悠々自適 = living comfortably and free from worldly cares

Unfortunately had to drop off the challenge towards the middle of November. I started a new job and it’s been a lot. It’s still been fun reading everyone’s progress! I hope I can join the winter challenge but I’m going to be really busy with work for at least half of January so we’ll see how that works out. For the rest of December I’ll be trying to catch up with both ABC and IBC but not committing to reading daily.

Seasons was about 煤払い which seems to be a sort of cleaning with pine branches that is good against oni? Also Seasons says it’s from China.
It seems like I might have time to finish Trash tonight because it’s not even 9 o’clock and I should sleep by midnight, but there’s not much else I need to be or should be doing?? Like the one thing I can/should is much better/safer in daytime so…

Words of the day
- 忘れ形見 = memento (形見) from a dead person. It’s supposed not to be forgotten.
- 発酵食品 = fermented food products
- 処世術 = secret of being successful in life (処世). Nothing about punishment.
- 人柱 = human sacrifice. From building bridges or castles the old way.
- ごうつくばり = thick head; stubborn person. Kanji form is 業突く張り.
- 建設的 = constructive (argument)
- 我関せず = regardless of self. Also 我関せず焉.
- 北京 = Peking; Beijing. No Furigana threw me off guard.

Pretty fun to be reading 阪急電車 along with the translation.
Sometimes I understand well without needing to look at the translation.
Sometimes I understand nothing and it saves me (wow descriptions of train lines and their layouts and junctures in Japanese).
Sometimes I think I understood, but reading the translation I see that I had missed something, and go back to the sentence and then get it.
But the best times, are when things are literally lost in translations: in some cases it wouldn’t sound natural to translate the Japanese sentence literally, so the translator took some liberties and wrote it in a different way; there, it feels like I have some super powers and know more than what is written 
Example:
せっかく珍しいものを見つけてわくわくしていた彼女をがっかりさせるつもりなど毛頭なかった。
was translated to:
He was in no way trying to dampen her enthusiasm.
(also felt super bad for the translator when two characters had a whole discussion about the kanji 生, where one says they want to drink 生ビール when they see it, the other one says that it doesn’t make him think of なま but of せい, they comment on how it is easy to draw it with only straight lines… yep good luck translating that to any language)

As a goof I rewrote this as “He didn’t have any plans to disappoint her excitement, which was so rarely seen” and now I feel like I accidentally wrote Dickens or something

- Finished 心やばい2 last night, really enjoying it still.
- Finished this week’s reading of ヤニ吸う2, meaning I’ve finished the volume!
- Coin flip says ‘new book’ for the next read, so going to finally start コミさん – I’ve had these physical manga hanging around for ages, so might as well start trying to get through 'em.
