Some english books that I was really looking forward to got here today: mainly Quit Your Band! Musical Notes From the Japanese Underground by Ian Martin. I have been trying to dig into the Japanese independent music scene recently, and it’s been really hard for me to find more than a scattering of bands. I’m having a really hard time putting together stuff like chronology and how the scene viewed and categorized itself internally (extremely important: even if a layperson can’t tell the difference between midwest emo and PNW indie rock, the distinctions here are extremely important to people actually working in the scene. I once saw a band’s singer get legitimately offended by someone saying they sounded more like Modern Baseball than the Long Winters), so it sounds like this book will give me a good basic framework to build off of. A lot of the writing I’m actually interested in is probably on decrepit mid 2000s Japanese music blogs… which is an adventure for a more linguistically and musically experienced future me, but this book should at least give me a good list of bands to start investigating.

• Tae Kim 255 → 274 – some formal expression, some literary expressions.
• からかい上手の高木さん chapter 27 – had just read in Tae Kim today that でさえ was going to be a pretty rare form of grammar and then almost immediately encountered ただでさえ. Maybe it’s just part of it as more of a set expression, but found that a little funny to find it so quickly and in a child’s speech lmao.

Day before yesterday, I finished vol 6 of 不機嫌なモノノケ庵. Look how adorable Moja is playing with the Legislator’s tadpole lines:

(There’s a later page that I didn’t get a picture of where Moja’s followed them over to their little bucket of water and accidentally falls in trying to play with them there.)

Yesterday, I read vol 7 of 不機嫌なモノノケ庵.

I went through another section of 2.43 that I’d already read but didn’t end up translating anything, as we’ve gotten to a scene that was at least partially in the anime so I wanna reference Funimation’s translation first for the dialogue. But I did come across a phrase that I forgot about that I really like:「他の部員のほうが心に槍を突き刺されたみたいな顔で突っ立っていた」Similar to being poleaxed, though it feels a little different to me, possibly just because of the context, but also that it’s through the heart. If it were just, like, “run through with a sword,” sure, but it’s “stabbed/pierced through the heart with a spear.” That it says where and that it’s the heart specifically really makes it feel more visceral. Anyway, I might start using it and/or similar phrases in my own writing.

Today, I read Mission 16 of SPY×FAMILY. Hooray for no political vocab in this one, so it wasn’t as difficult as it could have been.

I also read one chapter of 不機嫌なモノノケ庵.

Some vocab of note:

虎穴に入らずんば虎子を得ず (こけつにいらずんばこじをえず) [expression] nothing ventured, nothing gained; you won’t get the tiger cub without entering the tiger’s den. I already knew ず, but this was my first time seeing ずんば, so that was interesting too.

Well, I had read the first story of おばちゃんたちのいるところ looking up less than I normally do because it was weird and I wasn’t into it, and I wasn’t sure knowing all the words would help me understand what was going on much better, and I didn’t feel like going through the effort and just kinda. didn’t do anything about it when my brain shut off. I learned today that it was even more weird than I’d thought from what I had understood. That story’s wild, and not in the way that I enjoy, just in a sort of “okay, then” way. I do still plan on reading the rest of the stories, but I’m almost certainly gonna be selling the book afterward lol. I plan on starting the second story tomorrow, and I hope I have a better time of it. I’m not much of a supernatural person, but it’s not like I never enjoy it (I mean, I love youkai series as evidenced above, and they’re more supernatural than fantasy), which is why I’d decided to give this book a go, especially since it’s short stories. It’s too early yet to tell whether I regret that decision, like with deciding to give Murakami a go because he’s a popular author I hear about relatively a lot.

Day 5 Progress: お隣の天使様 二冊 - 33.44% - 40.36%

Was trying my hardest after work to rush through WK lessons and meet my reading quota before the turn of the day, but I failed and now (for unrelated reasons) it’s 3 AM.

Came across a strange sentence (to me) in today’s passage:

「今日は洗っていたのです。周あまねくんこそどうしたんですか」

「俺はポケットに手を突っ込んできたから」

ポケットに入れてやって来たなんて良い子は真似まねしないでほしい方法でここまでやって来たので、あまり偉そうな事は言えない。

それ以上は何も言わず、ただ冷たくなった華奢きゃしゃな手を包み込むように握った。

The idea that sticking your hands in your pockets, on its own, is “bad”, plus the fact that it’s literally 7 PM in the dead of winter makes this entire bit funny to me. Having your hands into your pockets! My goodness, how delinquent!

Word of the Day: 我に返る - to come to one’s senses or to calm down. Using 我 really conveys the sense of having returned to stability and tranquility again.

Visual Novel bookclub is between two VNs that I didn’t vote for. Bu$tafellows is definitely above my current reading level, and while 9-nine- could be doable with text hooking, it’s a decent chunk of money that I’d rather put toward something I think I’d enjoy more. I’ll probably either start Pokemon Violet or 夜カフェ instead.

Did this week’s Hobonichi translation. This one was really hard to translate in my opinion because it seems like in Japanese you can just keep adding an infinite amount of descriptors to something and in English it’s hard to add more than a few. It seems like the best option when translating is to pick out the most important ones and cut the rest, but when I do that, I feel like I’m cutting out a vital part of the original writing.

It’s like Kiki’s gotten so used to being alone and dealing with her own issues, and now that she feels like she can finally have a friend, that thought was rudely interrupted. Now that she knows what she’s missing out on, she can’t just go back to being fine with the way things are.
The Ursula section is coming up next!! I’m so excited to read that part, and then I’ll be pretty much at the end.

Sir, In that case I won’t be able to take you that seriously in the future because only the more bonkers kind of characters such as Zelos from Tales of Symphonia refer to themselves as オレ様 – and Zelos IS mostly a comic relief character! (Granted, he has some serious moments but still.)

Another two sentences of 魔女の宅急便. There’s a few phrases I didn’t quite get where I guessed liberally, but I ended up with something that made sense, so I’m satisfied.

According to ichi.moe, どこにでもある is an adverb adjective (thanks for catching that @pm215) expression that has the comment “noun or verb acts prenominally”. Not quite sure what is meant by that, I’ll have to research that further.
