Please give an undo button for typos

I’ve been trying third party extensions but they all seem broken at the moment, I assume from recent changes. I also can’t really use them on my phone anyway.

It is way too easy to make a typo and press enter without realising (especially when reviewing on my phone). I know the system tries to detect them, but it’s not perfect. One thing that also regularly happens is typing the reading instead of meaning or vice versa.

I’m on level 1 and already getting infinitely frustrated at the knowledge that I should have completed level 1 by now, but the few times this has happened have delayed the whole process. This makes me worried about how much those issues will compound and delay the whole program in the long run.

I get and assume that you’re worried about people cheating but it could be hidden in advanced settings and not enabled by default, and if people insist on cheating themselves it’s their problem. This is just such a necessary feature that the forum seems to have a ton of threads about it anyway.

I’d literally buy a lifetime subscription now if I knew I could reliably get undo to not stall my progress over nothing.

And to be extra 100% clear, I am only talking about typos, cat on keyboard, typing meaning instead of reading, or other similar things that are not cheating.

They’re not broken. You need to install Wanikani Open Framework. Also, if you’re on Android, you can use them with the Firefox browser.

If you’re on your phone, install one of the third party apps

i make so many typos (mainly because of my keyboard) that I just instantly exit the review if there’s one that I’ll get pissed if it gets sent back to apprentice. doesn’t always work, but definitely has helped save a good many (and my mental).

i really wish that there was a feature that would stop an answer from being wrong if i input the wrong katakana or hiragana though. if i get the root word right and accidentally type the given katakana/hiragana (ie: ろ instead of る) because i’m speed typing, i don’t think it’s fair for it to affect the srs.

Many people have wished for an undo button before. WK has no interest in adding one. If you feel you need it, either install WaniKani open framework and then a script if on computer. If using phone then look at a 3rd party app. They add a ton of functionality compared to the vanilla WK site.

As has been pointed out, there’s almost zero chance of Tofugu implementing this.

There are so many userscripts and apps that offer it, so there’s really no business case for them to.

There is some chance of Tofugu eventually implementing the feature, actually. (But let’s not hope much.) It’s a feature to be considered alongside Mark-As-Wrong, because accidental consecutive rights until Burn do happen. WaniKani staff mentioned somewhere earlier as both sides of the coin.

I can see WaniKani changing the stance a little. Not only adding Kana-only vocabularies, but also adding more Kanji and vocabularies. Don’t really know what to be expected in the future.

The working undo script is Double-Check. As others have pointed you need the Open Framork script installed as a prerequisite.

On phone the third-party apps have undo builtin.

We’ve all experienced this. The simple fix is to stop rushing or being lazy and actually look at what you have typed before hitting next. If you are typing the meaning instead of reading (or vice versa) and not noticing before hitting next, then you are really not paying attention.

If you are on iPhone, check out the app “tsurukame”. It has an undo function. I used to use it and it is a great app.

Actually I find rushing reviews to be really good for testing my memory. Answering quickly on instinct is a much better tell that I’ve assimilated something compared to slow thinking

You can type the response without immediately pressing the enter key.

PS: Slow thinking improves your recall more than rushing/guessing a wrong answer. The research was discussed here at some point.

OK but either way errors that aren’t real errors can still happen. Also, if I have to be slow and methodical because I need to be paranoid about typing the wrong button on my phone or typing reading instead of meaning… It makes everything take more time, it makes me enjoy the process less (because it’s an unnecessary source of worry and stress), and it adds friction.

In real life flashcards you judge yourself. On a test, if you realise you wrote an answer wrong you can correct it right after. If a teacher is testing you, they’ll usually be a human that understands things like typos or oral mistakes etc happen. On most flashcard software like anki and others you either judge yourself, or you can edit the result.

Being judged instantly and permanently when everyone knows how easy it is to mistype something, or misread the question, is just something that feels bad, is discouraging, delays the whole process, and is a punishment for nothing.

There is no way to defend not giving people the power to control this, outside of weird elitist ideology of “well I don’t make typos”. I’ve only been here for a few days and can already tell that undo seems to be one of the most common reasons for third party extensions and apps.

And if people are going to fiddle with external tools to do it, might as well just add it to the UI.

I actually never heard of Smouldering durtles… always used Flaming Durtles which I find a perfect app. Just checked Smouldering and it looks great too… just really surprised I never saw that one mentioned anywhere

That one was created recently after the addition of kana-only vocab since Flaming Durtles appeared to be no longer maintained

Could someone tell me the name of a userscript that will give an undo button please?

Just nth-ing the request for an undo button. The “i” button has an issue on my keyboard and often inserts an extra “i”. I’ve gotten many incorrect answers because of this.

I don’t want to mess with tampermonkey and run random people’s code in my browser. I am busy, and I have paid a lot of money for this service, so give me an undo button please

I’d like to 3,483rd this idea. All of Wanikani’s imitators have an undo button already; everybody asks for it. Weird not to do it.
