New iOS app

If you had better typo-prevention, would you prefer that over Anki mode? I only mention it because lots of people have noted that not typing the answers causes a drop in memorization.

I think the problem might have to do with not being a native English speaker (at least in my case it does). I very frequently know what word is supposed to mean but can not think of the correct English term or I get it wrong slightly because there is some nuance in English that makes a difference and that I‘m not aware of. Adding tons of synonyms is not a viable solution for me either so I love the Anki mode. But of course also, typing on mobile is just painful.

I feel that being able to do reviews in a less painful way makes it more likely that I keep up with them which is the most important thing. Also, even if it is slightly worse for memorization (which I don’t doubt) I don’t think it is that bad since a lof of people are using Anki successfully without typing in answers.

To solve this, I made my own build of the Allicrab app. I don’t know if the creator of that app is open to adding it but I would happily contribute some scripts to it so that others can use them too. This is the thread about that app: https://community.wanikani.com/t/ios-mobile-allicrab-for-wanikani

It’s not just typo’s though, I find everything about typing on a phone less than ideal. It’s slow, takes two hands, hurts my thumbs & wrists… At first I definitely let myself slip by with partially correct answers in Anki mode, but now I silently mouth every answer and try to be very strict about correct/incorrect answers. I don’t think the difference in memorization is significant enough to justify the extra time. I realize typing the answers is a fundamental part of WaniKani, but I’d really like to have the option not to.

Is it possible to install your build of the Allicrab app without a developer account?

I thought about this for a while because I’m so happy with the Anki mode and would love to share it and some of the other scripts I included. As I said earlier, the best approach would be if the original developer would consider including it in the app but he hasn’t responded to my question about this yet (probably too busy or maybe he just isn’t interested).

The only other option I’m aware of would be to create a copy of his app and properly submit it to the app store (maybe just leave it as a permanent beta version only available via Testflight?) but that 1.) is only something I would do if the original author was ok with it, 2.) involves more work than just publishing a user script and I*m not familiar with the app store submission process; I haven’t done this in almost 10 years and I imagine it is even more painful then it was back then and 3.) might not even be possible since the app store guidelines prohibit “copycat” apps. So while I would like to share it and thought about it, I don’t think there are a lot of options :-/

FYI

Did you ever find a solution for this?

It started working all by itself after a few days, and has continued doing so since. I don’t know what the problem was though, nor why it suddenly began to work. I sure didn’t do anything to help it.

Got it. Well, maybe if I leave it alone and stop fooling with it, it will do the same. I will confirm here if that happens for future readers of this thread. Either way, thanks for letting me know.

Sure enough, just letting the app sit for a while worked. I just finished a new lesson, and went to check again and it loaded. I’m not sure what the issue was, but I suspect that this has something to do with why it started to work. The Apple Watch app and complication display “critical items” that need review, so maybe having new critical items forced it to load.

Interesting, so that might be what triggered it. Nice find!

Hi,

Has anyone tried using the IOS app lately?
I downloaded it today and all I get is the spinning shiba inu…nothing else happens.
Does anyone know what to do?

Use Tsurukame instead, it’s a superior app. This thread has been dead for 9 months for a reason lol

I would recommend not to use Tsurukame too. It happened to much to me lately I wrapped up a review session, which would not sync with the Wanikani site and I could do them all again. Unless they fixed it with an update of course.

I’ve never had this issue, are you sure you’re syncing with a good connection? It could be an internet issue where the app isn’t able to communicate with the WaniKani server before you’re logging in via a different portal from Tsurukame.

I really hope we can have Fitbit Versa support too. Would love a WK app on my Fitbit.

It happens at home with a strong WIFI connection or when I am not home, with a 4G connection. Could try to login again to see if that works.

It is, but sadly it doesn’t support Apple Watch. I hope they add Apple Watch support, it would be nice to have a complication showing a different Kanji every hour, or the ones we get wrong more often or something like that…

From what I can tell this app is still on API v1, so I will be removing it from the Third Party Apps list. If it is still working, just tell me and I will add it back
