This is another manga suggestion, but the ABBC read ちいさな森のオオカミちゃん a while ago.
There is a fair amount of casual language - but there is a pretty comprehensive vocabulary list, and lots of discussion in the threads so anything you get stuck on will probably have been asked by somebody already. So perhaps it would be a fun way to familiarise yourself with some casual language and slang.
