  • YUYUの日本語Podcast eps 9 and 10 - listened to two episodes while driving around at work, so was kinda drifting in and out of paying attention/following. Surely at least 10 of those were solid listening minutes though, so checked off my box for the day

Today I didn’t do much listening since I had some stuff to do, but I also didn’t feel so motivated after cramming WaniKani vocabulary :joy:

After learning a lot of Kanji or reading lots of Kanji I sometimes just get japanese fatigue or something haha :eyes: still haven’t figured out what’s the best method for recovery :cherry_blossom::running_woman:

But anyways I listened to 3 episosode of the nihongo con teppei beginners podcast (244, 245 and 246) so that’s still going strong so far, and I listened to 3 minutes of the audiobook from がんばりすぎたい休み方 (I did understand most but not all of it) but just because it’s included in my audiosubscription so I figured why not :kissing:

7月3日 (月)
Today is my first actual day, and I’m still deciding if I’ll make a post per day or just a post every couple of days summarizing the past few days (I don’t want to overspam the thread). I listened to:

Nihongo con Teppei (Original archive) episode 1 (~11 min)
Learn Japanese with Noriko episodes 1 and 2 (3 min each)
:earth_americas: Kurzgesagt - the current video for this week (1:30 min)

I have always heard positive reviews from Teppei, so decided to give it a try. The beginner’s podcast was a bit too easy, but the “Original archive” seems fine (but still in the easier side) in terms of level. The first episode wasn’t so interesting, but I want to stick with it for a couple of days to know for sure. As for Noriko, I have been following her podcasts semi-regularly for the last ~1 year and really enjoy it, but had never listening to the first episodes, so decided to try and start from the beginning.

Kurzgesagt is definitely more challenging in comparison, and I usually need to listen to it at least twice, in 0.75x speed and also at least once with JP subtitles. But I definitely also learn a lot, so it’s worth it. I’ll try to do the other half of this week tomorrow. I also want to explore/go back to a few other podcasts, so I might do a different one tomorrow

Day 3 (well I wasn’t here in time for 1, but I did listen)! I’ve been watching various Splatoon streams and the like as usual, but I have to share the weirdest video I’ve discovered for this game – a while back they added a special to the game that launches a bunch of these blue balloons with cute smiley faces on them, and then they explode. It’s called デコイチラシ. Well, this guy made himself into one to create オイラチラシ. and his commentary is vaguely in character, sometimes. And he makes that weird おおおおおおおおお sound when he launches them. It’s…something! All of his channel seems to be weird facecam gimmicks and stuff.

Several short videos about describing/interacting with different items. The first compilation video was her showing and interacting with the items, the second one was looking at photos.

YUYUポッドキャスト #75~76 (44 min)

A couple of YUYU episodes today again. I’ll probably have quite a bit of time for listening tomorrow, might go for a different podcast, possibly さくら通信.

July 3rd!

Today I watched episode 2 of Shadow’s House, with no subtitles.
I didn’t understand everything, but enough to follow the storyline (helped by having read the manga!)

So now that the JLPT N4 is over, I will not only continue doing free listening with dubbed movies I have watched before (just finished Resident Evil 3/Biohazard 3) and podcasts as usual but I will be doing some intensive listening to these podcasts as I need to improve my listening. 1 month of Board of Education desk sitting would see me racking up a lot of Japanese studies.

I fudged this day a bit; I listened to a single episode of the Teppei beginner podcast just to get a checkmark. >.< At least it was nice to listen to something I understood 100% of for once…

7月3日
I listened to the first track of the first disc of the drama CD 華doll. It was recommended to me over on the Natively forum, and I thought I’d give it a try. It actually seems like it might be a reasonable listen for me, or at least that first track is. I’ll need to listen to it a couple more times, but it didn’t feel too difficult.

July 3rd:
:speaker::sun_behind_rain_cloud: 天気の子『小説』Prologue Part 3 of 3 (6:29)
:desktop_computer::sun_behind_rain_cloud: 天気の子 <メイキングドキュメンタリー> (3:06)
:desktop_computer: :film_strip: 新海誠:監督作品集 (3:05)

Finished the 天気の子 prologue and took a break with some youtube videos. I want to search up my circled words/phrases in the prologue section before I move on to the main story since many seemed specific enough that I’m sure I can expect them to pop up again and again.

The film making-of clip was so cute!! So adorable to see these two high school kids shyly introducing themselves as the voice actors. I can’t wait to watch the movie once I finish the book ( ´ ▿ ` )

And then the Shinkai Makoto anthology video - I clicked it just for fun but it turned out to be really great listening practice! The voice clips are very clear and it’s always a good feeling when you understand what is being said. It’s also super cute because the video was released right before 君の名は came out. I was living near Lake Suwa at the time, so I remember the period before-during-after that film’s release just being pure magic in the air for all of us living there. Like, look, mom! We’re in a movie! And the teaser here gave me a little morsel of that feeling again ^-^

2.43 清陰高校男子バレー部 上巻 ドラマCD「犬とキリンのヒストリー」(2 parts, 15 min)

I understood way more this time than the previous times I listened to it. Like that when Jun and Subaru showed up in the second part, they were at a tournament. I just kinda assumed it was the training camp for tall 1st- and 2nd-years that Aoki was invited to (though he turns it down, which I also must not’a realized before), and I guess I didn’t register that Oda was there for that part too. I also picked up that Aoki was only 1 cm taller than Jun at one point (in 3rd year it’s 3 cm) and that Jun was already a middle blocker before summer break of 2nd year. So that narrows down some when he made the switch from left wing spiker, as he must have done if he was the ace of his MS team. I still don’t know if it was willingly or not!

I also don’t have Kouhei listed in the “artist” field with the other 登場人物, so I must not have noticed him show up before lol

I still feel like I probably understood less than 50% overall though, even if it was leagues better than before. Actually I think I might have been zoned out for the last like 2/3 or whatever of part two all the times before lmao, how the hey did I think it was the training camp

Some vocab of note:

自画自賛 (じがじさん) [四字熟語, n., の-adj., する verb] singing one’s own praises; tooting one’s own horn

Listened:

  • Joe Hisaishi - A Symphonic Celebration Interview - YouTube - This man is a treasure. Video has hard english subs but I was mostly tabbed out and listening. Occasionally he would use some word I didn’t know and I’d tab back over and go back a few seconds to check with the subs, but mostly not too hard to follow.
  • this week’s 朝ミオ ~25 minutes, talking about wishes today, some of them I could follow, some of them not very much
  • 機動戦士ガンダム 水星の魔女 episode 1 - started a rewatch of the series with jp subs. The browser extension to add japanese that I subs use works with my yomichan setup, so it’s super quick to pause and look-up new words. There are a lot of those, mainly with sci fi and politicky stuff. I think I’ll probably pick up 決闘 pretty quickly though

I’m not sure if you perhaps mentioned it elsewhere, but I was wondering where/how you purchased (the audiobook?) of 天気の子, as I’ve been eyeing the book, but I’m thinking listening to it would be even better. :slightly_smiling_face:

Today I listened to Nihongo con Teppei Z, episode 2, which was nice. I also listened to the beginner podcast until episode 253 and about 10 minutes of the audiobook of また、同じ夢を見ていた.
Pretty solid day I would say!
Can’t wait for tomorrow, the audiobook is actually really catching!

神のカルテ around 10 min from start. Audible version sounds better than audiobook.jp, but still troublesome for me (if not intermittent reading). Didn’t read for about a month or so.

YUYU, 1 new episode.

Today I listened to the Joe Hisaishi interview:

Thank you for sharing! This is great, I love his music and actually saw this for sale the other day and wondered what it was, now I know!

I appreciate how he talks relatively slow, though he is a little mumbly at times, I also kept getting a bit distracted with the music… but I think I mostly understood. I tried not to fall back onto the subtitles as much as I could. I like the part were he was explaining that he had to mentally prepare himself for two years for Miyazaki’s storyboard phone calls

Oh yeah, I forgot that this was my first post here. I’ll be doing what I did last time and listen on days when I find something rather than consecutively. Will try and not fall off at the end again, and hopefully will listen more regularly too I have a feeling I said this last time

Thank you @omk3 for hosting the thread again :grinning:

More mini videos! Now I know to put a 山盛(やまも)り spoonful of cocoa into my milk~.

Only two more video in the absolute beginners playlist left! One is another spot the difference game, so I’m extra excited.

Day 4! I spent a lot of of time last night exploring more of the Youtube channel of that guy whose video I posted; there’s some bizarrely high effort gimmick stuff in there. Amazing things are happening in the Japanese Splatoon community:

Spent more time on streams, it’s nice to chill with those in the morning. I also found a high level Japanese player’s tier list of weapons and I was happy I could kinda sorta keep up (it has subs) because this guy talks SO fast. It’s an odd list too, very different than the opinions of most western players. I’m curious if that’s a community divide or just this guy.

it’s on AudibleJP! I’m currently doing the free trial to see if audiobooks are something I can handle (since usually I don’t enjoy them in English, I’d rather just read the book) but so far I’m really enjoying the cinematic nature of the voice acting ( ´ ▿ ` )
