I’m still not hooked into Teppei, I might consider checking the Nihongo con Teppei Z to see if it’s a bit more interesting. I was planning to watch Kurzgesagt today, but I also wanted to look for a different podcast to try to listen to while preparing dinner. I found まいこ先生のまいにちすこしの日本語を, and was surprised with how it felt a bit harder then both Teppei and Noriko for me. She talks a lot about raising children bilingual, which I find interesting, but perhaps a bit boring in the longterm (the episodes are also quite long, which makes it a challenge for me as I tend to prefer short podcasts). I am happy I managed to listen more today, though. I have a longe commute for an errand tomorrow, and might try to listen to a longer podcast again. But when I have time I’ll try an audiobook (thank you @taiyousea for letting me know about AudibleJP!)
As expected had some extra time in the morning. To be completely honest I was not super focused for the さくら通信 ones so I’m not sure how much of that I actually caught. It’s also harder to listen to because the audio quality (I guess at least for those old episodes?) is noticeably worse and therefore harder to catch what they’re saying. That podcast is also harder compared to what I’m used to and they speak much faster, but still, it’s crazy how much good audio quality can help comprehension.
The YUYU episode was pretty cool though, he talked about Ghibli’s Porco Rosso which I haven’t seen, but I might soon, looks like an interesting watch. I plan to watch most (all?) Ghibli movies at some point, I’ve only watched a few and enjoyed them a lot. The music especially, I must have listened to every Ghibli soundtrack at this point over the years, without actually having seen most movies xD.
Another podcast day while I was at work, might do another gundam episode tonight but it’s also a holiday, so might go do some stuff with friends if I have enough energy
25 minutes of a 50-minute video from Yuyu Podcasts took me 50 minutes doing it intensively and I have a headache. I will try to finish the rest though before going to free-flow listening.
I’m late to the party but I realised I am missing something during my Japanese studies and it really is the listening. I don’t know if I’ll overdo it as I’m doing the challenges also for writing and reading, but let’s see!
I am pretty happy that I manage to listen more thanks to this challenge! It doesn’t seem like that much on a daily basis, but doing it everyday - it sure adds up!
Well anyway, got to listen to episode 3 and 4 of nihongo con teppei Z today, as well as some minutes in the audiobook of また、同じ夢を見ていた .

Listened to the first track of 華doll again; I’ve added a formal symbol for it at this point for my calendar, since I can foresee myself listening to it often enough to warrant its own symbol. I feel a little bad because the first track is like 5 minutes long and that’s basically all I’ve listened to these past few days, but I knew going in things would look like this. :S As bad as it looks it’s an improvement over “didn’t do any listening”, so I’ll take what I can get, I suppose.
On my usual Splatoon listening grind. I should probably branch into trying other stuff, but this has been nice to drill down into one thing, the relevant words repeat so much I feel like it’s helping a lot.
This is a really high level guy playing my current favorite weapon. Had been looking for someone who streams/makes videos playing it regularly but no luck so far, just people doing it for one video. Same is true here, this guy makes varied content switching weapons constantly. All the same, watching how he handles it is helpful and I think I could follow a big portion of what he said. It’s amusing the little words you learn in your niches – since there’s a mode in this game based around clams, I must know the word あさり better than the vast majority of Japanese learners haha.
Porco Rosso is so cool! “Better a pig, than a fascist.” It’s a really underrated Ghibli; seems like a lot of people skipped it. You gotta see Kiki’s Delivery Service too if you haven’t yet. It’s so lovely.
I haven’t! But definitely want to, thanks for the recommendation. I’m just hoping that I can somehow do it in Japanese with a bit of help, but we’ll see how that goes ^^ .
I need to sit down and do a more thorough study with them; even with subtitles on there’s so much technical talk that I’m not able to keep up. If I have spare time this evening after getting off work I’m going to try to break down the フェルミのパラドックス one and start there, since the club’s actually watching that one this week. ダイソン球 was our first video and I meant to actually sit down and put time into it, but…

I’m absolutely knackered today, so some of the things in this video were outside my understanding. But there was a fun game where you had to guess the animal! And another were you guessed the anime character.

I have to say, I’m starting to enjoy Teppei a bit more, especially as background while I cook in the evenings. He was talking about the importance of listening practice and listening as input, in order to have speaking as an output… and he made a comparison between listening as eating, and speaking as going to the toilet I loved it. I also managed to finish this week’s part of Kurzgesagt; I feel like I’m understanding it better than the first video. The episode I watched of Noriko was about chapter 1 of Tobira, which was lovely since I’m taking up Tobira as a textbook and am halfway through that chapter!
And of course, I had to listen to the 紅の豚 (Porco Rosso) episode from YUYU. Thanks @rikaiwisdom for sharing, it’s lovely to hear about nice resources from others in this thread!
【日本地図】大神ミオは都道府県を理解しているのか？【ホロサマビンゴ】 - YouTube ~35 minutes - mio did a prefecture quiz today, so I pulled up a prefecture map and was kinda watching along as she filled it out to make sure I wasn’t accidentally learning anything wrong. Reminded me that I haven’t tried a round of japan geogeussr in a while, so I went and did that after but they added a time-out function to normal maps now, so I can’t just wander around and explore, which made me kinda mad.
Today I had to go to the dentist for some fillings, so I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself and only managed to do a bit of listening - 2 episodes of Nihongo con Teppei for Beginners.
It’s better than nothing, but I really need to start pushing myself to do more listening practise…
Today I listened to 2 episode of Nihongo con Teppei Z while taking a walk. I definitely have gotten more comfortable with the normal podcast now, even though it was challenging in the beginning. The episodes are longer and more complex than the beginner podcast, but it’s definitely more rewarding!
I also still have the Nihongo con Teppei archives in the back of my head, but now I have come so far already with the new podcast, I don’t really feel like starting the old one
I still have some time today but because I want to have a slow evening I updated a bit earlier than usual.
Last night I decided to start a legend playthrough of Yakuza 0 (Legend difficulty is the highest difficulty on Yakuza games if you’re not familiar with the games). The first time I played this was back in 2018, way before I had even gotten the idea in my head to learn Japanese. Looking at my first trophy earned, it’s dated to 10th July 2018, so it’s nearly exactly 5 years since I first played this. It’s kind of weird how much I understand now, back then I understood nothing, it was just a fun game that happened to be in Japanese, now I can (mostly) understand what they’re saying! And can also notice the differences in what is being said and what is written in the subtitles (they sure do love replacing mild frustration in Japanese to F*&@!! S!*%!!).
I had tons of fun though. This is probably my favourite Yakuza game, when that dual guitar harmony comes on in the intro it’s hard not to get seriously excited
Shame there’s only an option to turn the subtitles off for the cutscenes, but the good thing is that there’s so much dialogue for my ears to learn Japanese.
I also watched and listened to Speak Japanese Naturally’s new vid today:
I love these, they are so calming and relaxing. I think I understood most but I heavily relied on the JP subs. I need to try and force myself not to look at them so often.
+1 for the Porco Rosso! I feel it gets overlooked a lot when Ghibli films are mentioned, I love the setting, there’s so much beautiful background art in that film (Hotel Adriano is so picturesque). I like how it’s not too serious (the pirates ) but still addresses a lot of serious topics. Plus Miyazaki’s love of planes really shines through.
