October 15th!
Today I had a lesson with one of my tutors. We talked about what I’ve been up to in work recently, and read through the script of an N3 Listening exam together. Listening is definitely my weak point, so we are working on familiarising me with the type of questions that are likely to come up and trying to identify which ones I need the most practise with.

Back to my home post
Didn’t do a lot of listening, was busy working through grammar exercises. That won’t change for the forseeable future, but I’ll make a better effort in including some listening time as well.
It’s spooky month, so I might finally watch all those yokai videos I’ve saved…

| Satori Reader: The Jam Maker | 22 | 1-2mins |
Yesterday’s post. I didn’t do any podcast listening in the car and then I was getting ready for bed and I was like oh no, my listening streak! So I listened to one Satori Reader episode. My streak is preserved!
Week 2 Recap(九日〜十五日)
I missed two days last week, but I’m certainly getting more listening in than I would without this challenge.
I’ve made some progress in The Journalist TV series. The plot’s a little complicated but the show has a lot of explanatory scenes, which helps. I’ve been toggling between English and Japanese subtitles to clarify individual words and note new vocab.
The show’s also helped me understand the different levels of formality better because there are a lot of characters in different environments (office, home, restaurant, etc.). One thing I picked up on was how much 君 is used to reinforce hierarchy in the political environment. For example, the Diet used it to address the former Finance Bureau Director-General when he was called as a witness: あなたは 毛利義一君本人ですか (Are you Yoshikazu Mouri?).
I’ve also been re-listening to japanesepod101 lessons I’ve already studied. On one hand, I can see how far I’ve come; the dialogues don’t seem nearly as fast as they did the first time around. On the other hand, I realize I didn’t grasp all the vocab and grammar structures as well as I thought I had. It’s definitely been worthwhile to go through them again.

I did an N3 practise test today, so I’m counting the listening section as my listening practise today. I scored 45/60 in the listening section which is better than I was expecting, though tbh there was probably a bit of luck involved ![]()

日本語の森 JLPT N3 言葉プレイリスト (12:39)
I watched two の森 kotoba videos today - these were extra cute because the cameraman was laughing often at sensei’s vocab explanations (≧◡≦) The vocab in these videos seem to be gaining in difficulty from the ones preceding them, so I’m truly benefitting from hearing him explain the definitions using multiple synonyms. I was also pleased to note that some of the words are ones I’ve been studying lately on toriiSRS and I remembered their meanings right away!
I wanted to listen more to Occho playing Kirby Discovery but I have too many more important JLPT study tasks to do right now, unfortunately ![]()

【星のカービィ ディスカバリー】 (18:32 - 30:22)
I enjoy listening to Occho a lot but this Kirby game isn’t really the type of game I like to play. I found myself losing interest from fight after fight, so I said goodbye at the 30min mark. I’ll go back and check out other Occho videos later but this actually inspired me to look for a playthrough of another favorite of mine…

「ファイナルファンタジーX-2 (PS4)」Part 1【FF10-2】![]()
(18:52)
My first video game obsession, FFX-2! Totally unnecessary storytime, but when I was a kid I was so in love with this game for PS2. I went to the game shop back in maybe '04 and saw the logo for it on a music CD, assuming it was the soundtrack. I was so excited to listen to it, I immediately put it in the car stereo while my dad drove me home. I recognized the songs, but the words were totally unintelligible - it was my first time ever hearing Japanese! My dad and I laughed at the unexpected surprise, but I still have and treasure that CD to this day (well-worn from lots of listening, the booklet featuring doodles by my younger self).
It was so nostalgic to hear the intro for FFX-2 on this playthrough. The narrating player has a quiet and kind demeanor - I may seek out a different player whose energy matches mine a bit more, but I enjoyed what I watched today („• ֊ •„)

Today I watched the latest walk and talk video from Speak Japanese Naturally -
About autumn smells you can find in Japan. I think I understood most of it, though had to rely on the JP subs at times when lots of big words appeared. I think 金木犀 is now hardwired into my brain it was said so often.

i found a different let’s-play streamer for ffx-2 named Hitsuji羊 and she’s never played this game before! she’s a bit more lively than the guy from yesterday’s video, so i don’t mind stepping back slightly in the story to hear her thoughts as she plays. she included the Eternal Calm interlude, which most people skip, so it was nice to see it again. it’s exciting to hear live reactions from someone who hasn’t played the game before and doesn’t have every single moment memorized beat-by-beat (like me aha) ![]()

Brotherhood. I actually grew up watching the 2003 version on TV, but only ever rewatched it once I think. I’ve rewatched Brotherhood a couple of times now, but it never ceases to please me.

Watching stuff on Youtube might be what gets me to make a mining deck on Anki… I do find myself looking up words I’ve heard several times without remembering them at all so it might be nice to get more reviewing in. No promises tho.

旅する美少女ハンター三人組!:1【FINAL FANTASY X-2】![]()
(22:38)
The next FFX-2 stream from Hitsuji was the proper start of the game, since she began with the Eternal Calm interlude that I watched yesterday. When I played this game as a kid, I hadn’t heard of FFX (or any Final Fantasy, really) so I played X-2 with a completely new perspective. It’s so delightful to hear Hitsuji play this game coming from FFX because I never realized how exciting it is to the player for there to be a Yuna-not-Yuna mystery in the beginning. She was absolutely losing her mind when Rikku and Paine (named リュック and パイン in Japanese - that was new info to me!) had to start fighting “Yuna” right off the bat. Sorry if this information is boring to you all, I’m having such a nice time revisiting my old favorites from the perspective of a new language ![]()
