Essential Scripts / Addons for New Users

I just learned there are custom scrips for WaniKani. I installed the Open Framework and was looking at the giant list here but since I am still learning the ropes, I don’t know what a lot of these extensions really do. Are there any that are essential to have? Ones that you can’t live without?

Phonetic Semantic composition script! No doubt about it. Should be a standard part of WK in my opinion. Makes it so much easier to see patterns that will help a lot in remembering kanji.

And of course Ultimate Timeline, self-study, and the self-study additional filters. ^^

Thanks for the suggestions! They all look really helpful. What was the self-study you were talking about? I am getting a lot of different ones showing.

I think Ultimate Timeline is the script everyone should have. It’s the one I’d take if I were cast away on a desert island, you know?

But then I also second the Keisei Phonetic-Semantic Composition script, and I would add the Pitch Info script and the Font Randomiser.

Basically, things that add to your learning experience, helping you to draw more connections and broaden your understanding.

I prefer this to the Self Study script, personally, but it’s not as flexible.

I like the Visually Similar Kanji one. Really helps to see the kanji you’re getting mixed up side by side so you can see “oh, of course! That one has the leader radical and the other doesn’t. Duh!”

The ignore script has saved my life a million times. Only to be used responsibly though.

To clarify for OP, this is either Double Check or Override. The former is better implemented than the latter.

VERY important script. Self congratulating is essential.

That self-study script is exactly what I needed! I have such a hard time remembering new vocab

My image for that script

The dashboard progress plus script is a great one too for seeing when you’ll unlock new kanji or guru items

I also remember hearing that there was a script that would color text based on if it was kun or on but I can’t seem to find it again. Does anyone know what it’s called?

There is a script for that? Are you kidding me? How did I miss that?!

Guess I’ll have to reset to level 1 …

Also, I very carefully and cautiously want to recommend the reorder script.
It allows you to change the order in which review or lesson items are shown. This is especially helpful when you are aiming to go at maximum speed. With this, you can easily put the items of your current level at the front of your review queue.
However, a few warnings first!

  • Only start using this script when you’re already a few levels into Wanikani (let’s say 5-6-7 or something)
  • Be sure that you also do your other reviews! I have seen people bury themselves in old reviews, causing them to burn out. Always finish your reviews.
  • Never use them for lessons. People use them to skip vocabulary, but once again, people end up with lesson piles of 1000+. Simply make sure that you never use it for lessons.

Also, this is not really a script, but really informative and fun to look at.
Over time, it will show your progress for every single kanji, and show how your Apprentice, Guru, etc. items grow over time.
