DanMachi Volume 1 Week 7

I agree, that’s why I am still reading in the first place. But at the same time, it makes me wish even more that they would do without.

Around which volume does your blurred comment happen?

The last one I read was the 13th but the whole arc is quite long so serious things will start happening before that one. I think it starts at volume 10 volume 9 since it’s all interlinked. Mind you, some parts of the 8 were boring, try not to die from them. There’s also a hint.
I also agree that the story could do without the illustrations…

Possibly. Can you give more context? (Sentence before or after for instance)

It was the part where (if I understood correctly) ミヤばあさん was playing a trick on him as if he had eaten and left without paying before when he was invited by シルさん,
before that sentence he said 「…ちょっと、ね」after ミヤばあさん said she was kidding

I havent been to japan but I guess since the books are aimed at high schoolers/young adults a lot of the time they use fan service to hook people… (Especially a cover like the first one)

Ah right, I think I remembered. It’s not exactly that.

シルさん invited him to eat at the place, but told ミヤ母さん that he eats a lot so that she would give him tons of food (and thus make him pay a lot). If I remember correctly, she would get a cut from what he pays (instead of tip maybe?), so yeah, basically she is taking advantage of him. I think she says sorry about it, though.

Well, those aimed at male high schoolers/young adults.

I have no real justification for this, but I read it as “They are teasing me/making fun of me (in a friendly way)”. It seemed to fit the context, and ちゃっかり vaguely reminded me of 茶化す. Right before, both of them are acting like he will buy and eat a lot of food. He takes them seriously and is trying to get them to understand that he won’t. Finally, シル tells him that she was just joking, and that she just wants him to have a good time and relax himself. ちゃっかりしてるよなあ comes right after this, so in context, my guess was as mentioned above. Curious to see if Napth has other ideas from this minimal amount of context.

I remember that Bell wasn’t mad about the situation but I don’t remember the details.
Can someone post a picture of the page, maybe?

Saved me from typing! Thanks! :turtle:

You were typing the whole page??? :exploding_head:

Haha, yep. I was about half way through… :turtle:

Looking like I was probably wrong…

Starting to think it is more:

“She is totally taking advantage of me…” (though not as negatively as that sounds…)

But shes still a sweet character though imo… I mean she didnt have to give him her breakfast after all

Yeah, I think he is saying it lightheartedly, not angrily.
Waiting with baited breath for the verdict of our in-house Napth.
Otherwise we could probably keep talking in circles for hours which can be fun too…

Oh, wait, he did get mad. I didn’t remember that.
So, the exchange I was talking about happened on the previous page, then when he asks シル about it, she goes えへへ instead. Then she says that she said that somehow by accident.
「応援してますからっ」

So, yeah, eventually she says she is joking and that he doesn’t have to eat a lot but should instead just enjoy himself. The sentence you were originally referring to means that he still feels like she is trying to take advantage of him (although it’s a much more vague feeling than the 悪女かよ!)

Well, no, he still feel baited, but he went from 100% sure he had been 詐欺’d to maybe 20% sure. Definitely still suspicious, but he is going to let it pass.

I mentioned it before, but I do also think she is very suspicious in general. I can elaborate, but then I’ll have to spoil things from volumes 2 and 6

Actually I just realized how much one past tense word I missed changed my interpretation. Instead of how he supposedly eats a lot, I thought he “ate” a lot as in in a previous visit to the tavern

Well, one new phrase learned. If I ever want to (80%) light-heartedly (and 20% suspiciously) complain that someone is taking advantage of me (with percentages varying depending on intonation and context), I know what to say. :turtle: :upside_down_face:

On second thought, I don’t know what to say.

:turtle: :upside_down_face: :joy:

That’s more in the intonation/context. The same way the sentence “is that so?” in English (random exemple) could mean different things based on how you say it.

Let’s all keep editing our posts until this conversation stops making any sense. :upside_down_face:

Probably unimportant, but the Translator decided to go with “Clever girl, this one.”
So yeah, he definitely felt scammed for a few seconds, and the suspicion didn’t completely disappear. But Bell is also probably too shy to do anything more than show his pain anyway…

Ok so I reread that page and now I understand what happened. I mixed up the dialogue alot where シルさん was talking for ミヤ母さん’s dialogue.
