To avoid kana-only vocabulary, consider Smoldering Durtles (Android):

This is possible with the settings that are already implemented. Under the advanced lesson settings you can set the desired number of items per type per lesson session. If you set the max number of kana only vocab to 0, you will only be shown them if you already did all other available lessons.

With ‘voc’ in the order, it was separating regular vocab from kana vocab and putting all the kana vocab at the very end. I guessed it was working similar to the ‘filter’ action where it differentiates between the two types of vocab.

You’ve been able to filter kana vocab since they were introduced. I just added sorting options for kana vocab

Disclaimer: I haven’t tried any of these approaches because I don’t mind the kana vocabulary.
