I’ve accepted I won’t LOL
Plenty of chapters left to make it in, @mintyfresh @Phryne. I don’t advance on Saturdays because it’s the one day I allow myself to drink. Use it to catch up. Consider reading four pages.
The problem is that (1) I got the book four weeks late (damn you corona!) and (2) the normal pace of the book club is all I can really manage. I just don’t have the mental bandwidth to read extra pages and the stress of trying to do so burned me out on reading Kiki entirely for the past week. So accepting I won’t catch up is the best thing for me to do right now, I think. It makes the reading feel like less of a hopeless struggle
Sounds like that’s a good plan for you right now It’s not a small achievement to read at the book club’s pace, no matter the time shift between you and the actual club.
And don’t forget, you can always ask questions even weeks or months later, there’s always still people around to help you along.
Yeah! Quote one of my posts and it’ll head straight to my email inbox. I’m sure it’s the same for all of the other regular (and, of course, far less entertaining) book club members as well.
Going at your own pace is (in most cases) better than trying to keep up with other people just for the sake of it. I just got the book today and I probably won’t really try to catch up, because it’s just really a lot.
The best part of this: noone is gonna judge you for going faster/slower or starting earlier/later than others, if anything, people are gonna help you and encourage you!
Week 11
If you can make it through to the end of this week you’ll have read more than half the chapters in the book, and more than half the pages.
がんばって!
Just wanted to say that I’m still here, still reading, but not really forum-ing because just reading the book takes up all the time I have left after finishing my SRS reviews
But I do read through the new comments on the various threads, thanks for asking and replying to all those questions – they’ve helped me even if I don’t have time for more than lurking!
(You all go into so much more detail than I do, I just aim for good-enough understanding and move on to find out what happens next – so your questions/answers often clear up things I’ve just glossed over)
I’ve just been on a two week holiday and did no reading…don’t even want to know how far behind I am. But I’ll work that out today and get going again!
So I’ve checked - 4 pages which I’ve partly done, then another 33 pages to the end of chapter 6. This may take a while!
Phew. Just took a look at the polls in the last few chapters. We’re really hemorrhaging readers. Hopefully our remaining toughs will keep at it. We’re over halfway there, after all.
I’ll see what I can do to catch up this weekend! My eye has now mostly recovered (i.e no longer fire-hydrant red) and so reading might actually be possible. I am determined to finish even if I’m a couple of weeks late!
I’ve finished chapter 5, so I’m getting there! Only one chapter/ 2 weeks behind…
Same haha. I’m still here in spirit.
real life responsibilities orz
There is a talk about what to do to help people catch up in the Chapter 7 thread. I thought I mention it here, because there is a possibility that people who are behind aren’t actually reading Chapter 7 thread yet.
Week 13
I don’t want to go all cheesy motivational poster, but if you’ve made it this far you’ve read a heck of a lot of book.
Just so people know, I’m planning to post a proper poll about whether to take a break or not tomorrow
Well another week passed and another week behind haha.
Work has been pretty exhausting, and with all the after work errands and WK studying I do I barely have any energy to read at night haha. I really would appreciate a break, as the last couple weeks have been super super killer for me.
I wouldn’t have said anything about it, but seeing so many other readers also in the same boat is encouraging haha. I really would love to get current with the book club again, as I miss the discussions.
I’m still behind, it’s been an unexpectedly busy week. On the other hand, I’m not MORE behind than last week.
Discussion: should we take a one-week break?
We have a fairly large number of readers who are still persevering with the book, but have fallen behind the ‘current’ discussion point.
We’ve had limited success with taking breaks in the past, but that was only one book (as far as I remember), so I don’t think we can write it off yet.
I’d propose we take a break this upcoming week, between chapters 7 and 8. (It might also be worth noting that the last few chapters are a bit shorter page-wise, so if you catch up you probably have a better chance of keeping up now.)
I’ll post some polls to gauge numbers - thanks to everybody who has commented on the issue already, and feel free to add more thoughts.
I’m behind and…
- a one-week break will definitely* let me catch up
- a one-week break might let me catch up
- a one-week break likely wouldn’t let me catch up, but would be helpful anyway
- a one-week break likely wouldn’t let me catch up, so wouldn’t make a difference

*You’re not contractually obligated to catch up if you vote for this it’s just useful to know how likely a break is to help people.
I’m not behind and…
- I wouldn’t mind a one-week break
- I would prefer not to take a break but don’t mind if we do
- I’d really rather not take a break
- I would actively appreciate a one-week break!

I wanted to vote for “likely wouldn’t let me catch up, but would be helpful anyway” first but then I thought voting “might let me catch up” will boost my motivation to catch up even more
