Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

The Rescue (2021)

Alright this is the hidden quest I liked by far the best. We meet old characters we have way more attachment to than random miners, there’s involvement of the most minor of the villains, and scouting around with Joshua is a fun enough setup. I quite enjoyed this section.

What I also like, as a fan of weird little details and tastefully employed tedium, is how the bridge is up and you have to take the little boat across, but with so many people always wanting to cross, you get that waiting montage. I almost wish it had been longer. These are the kind of weird things that amuse me way more in games than they should, and that’s why I had an avatar on here taken from Flower, Sun, and Rain for so long, haha. But I really do respect that they do a small sequence to simulate the wait and don’t just skip.

The boat and dark tunnel were probably my favorite of the ways you see the world change without the orbments so I sent us in the wrong order. I didn’t even know you could get Tita a new S-Craft but I basically never used her outside the bit where you have to for the onsen so it’s ok.

Unlucky that the bridge was open when the city appeared given that I think it opens twice a day? It’s thematically cool though, so I don’t mind. Discovering all the unexpected ways the orbment blackout impacts life in Liberl is the only really interesting thing in this part of the game.

I would argue that if there’s something worth fixing, it would be the bridge over the Onsen…

I think the reason I find this quest so bizarre is that there’s tension between the meta-element of me wanting to do all quests and the roleplay element of me thinking “there’s absolutely no way I would waste my and everybody else’s time doing that if I was in-universe”.

After my 3rd expedition in the tunnels I realized that I didn’t need to equip the goggle as long as I avoid combat, I can just use the minimap to orient myself.

Given the importance of the task at hand, I expected that maybe you would be allowed to cut the line…

It’s cool seeing the ravens helping out with managing the crisis.

I decided to avoid the Guild and go straight for the hidden quest since I’d rather not lose one of my last two Zero-point-thingy device just yet. And clearly we’re canonically not in a huge hurry anyway…

Foiled again! At least I got to dispatch the quest monsters on the road.

Damn, sounds like an internal combustion engine could be really useful right now. Chucks. If only we had one of those. And a lot of gasoline conveniently located in the docks right next to where the boats ferry people.

I like that Estelleたち don’t even attempt to explain that he can’t fix it. If it’s not an onsen they truly couldn’t care less.

I’m really tired of my damage output not matching the enemy’s HP growth, turning every fight into a marathon. And every enemy seems to inflict status effects now.

Unlocking tier 3 orbments was cool, while I could use them at least. I guess we’re just spamming Josua’s S-Craft then.

Fun and balanced gameplay.

Anyway, a school is taken hostage by heavily armed mercenaries. We save everybody. Nobody is hurt. I wasn’t worried. The status quo is restored.

Oh my god he’s gonna kill him!

But of course not.

It’s time for this game to end now. Enough wheel spinning.

Looking at this 361 and remembering how Jinn’s basic punch did 4 digit damage…

That particular hit I’m assuming might be partially that guy’s fault; I didn’t use him but some of the side characters they give you briefly tend to seem not very good, that part’s a shame. Or maybe you had to use him and I forgot cause he did nothing lol, it’s been a bit.

In general I don’t really get damage calculation in this game, there’s clearly some factor I don’t understand. Estelle hit a guy for 7 (that’s the digit seven) damage twice this week despite not having any debuf. Meanwhile the temporary bracers in my party started hitting for decent damage eventually.

At any rate I have Joshua set up as a one-man army like in FC and it works fine. Agathe is good too but I couldn’t have him in by party at this moment. I miss Croze…

I dunno how much of this is Evo vs original differences, but I did find the combat to get easier as the games went on. I think the Evo versions use the same mechanics as Zero, so these are the damage formulae I found for both:

SC

Zero (and therefore Evo)

Just setting Attack and Defense power to 1, base damage for original version is 0.5 whereas base damage for evo is 1.25. Also the Skill Power is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. It’s additive in the originals but multiplying everything in evo? Though, it appears they changed that from a number (Estelle’s first S-Craft has a power of 40) to a percentage (in Zero the first S-Craft has a power of 230%).

Um, basically things are different and that’s why it’s not very fair nor comparable.

Week 39

I have to agree that the school hostage situation was the best quest we’ve had this chapter. The scenario was interesting and being able to sneak around and scout out what the baddies were doing was refreshing.

Gilbert sure fell apart at the end though. He was so serious when fighting Estelle on the ark, but here he just goes full slapstick  The attack where he hits 20 times while quipping and then landing like no damage was silly. I admit I also thought we were about to see Campanerula(?) roast him on screen but I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up.

Quick question

  • long week (with uninterrupted 10k scene) to finish chapter
  • short week (~3k) to allow npc time, have that long scene be next week’s

Here it is!
