Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Alone in the Dark (2005)

I’m such a contrarian I find a few Uwe Boll films a lot of fun, but Alone in the Dark is sadly just boring and incoherent. Shame.

Anyway the tower quest monster is that thing with way too many of them where as soon as you hurt one it does AoEs, isn’t it? That fight was miserable. Even when I figured that out it was rough. Score one point for single target combat with this evil encounter

I was pretty light about the optional NPC dialog so I probably didn’t explore Grancel well enough to get a good taste of what was going on; if any of you dig in more I’ll be curious to hear. I did the quests, anyway.

Zeiss… the escalators stopped!

I know night vision goggles are a pretty flat gimmick in this game, but I do appreciate the lights going out in the tunnel, and how the elevators are out so you have to use the stairs. These sorts of little touches did a lot for my appreciation of this section; sometimes the little things get me.

The hot springs quest though, god. I’m more willing to write off the places you can pick at the logic of us doing the mine quest right now, but the hot springs are kind of a comical priority and it probably only makes it worse that they themselves acknowledge it but just end up going “ehh you know… people really like hot springs so that’s important too!” pretty much haha. Then the quest is a whole bunch of running around only. I’m generally being nicer to it about the writing stuff at the moment, just the mood I’m in I guess, but doing the actual quest steps was tedious. Bottom place of the three hidden quests.

First boss encountered.

I have to remember how to do that now.

If feel like, if I was playing alone without a club, this is where I would drop this game. Not because it’s particularly bad or anything, but just because this feels like complete filler and the devs make no efforts to hide that fact. I think I wouldn’t have the motivation to ever pick it back up if it wasn’t for the club schedule. We could have parallel cutscenes where we see what the pirates or the army are doing, maybe investigations on the flying city etc… But no, we’re just casually backtracking through the entire game to do generic quests without any sense of momentum. It’s like we doing apprentice bracer chores again.

Well I wouldn’t have guessed that one!

This situation is quite strange, the pirates seem to have been completely absolved of their wrong doing while under the manipulation spell (despite the fact that they are, you know, pirates) but Dalmoa had to pay bail and still seems to be framed as a minor bad guy now.

I’ve complained about this since FC but this was just bad writing from the start. Have the Ouroboros or whoever pay bribes or blackmail people into doing their bidding, this way they still have their free will and we can judge their behaviour. If they’re being brainwashed and remote-controlled, then why is Dalmoa even in trouble? He literally did nothing wrong.

This feels like a way to dilute any bad action so that nobody can really be held responsible. Dalmoa set fire to an orphanage, but he was being brainwashed so it doesn’t really count. So who’s responsible? The Ouroboros? Well, no, nobody really holds them responsible for that either, because they’re not really evil, they just have their own shadowy motives and may or may not be revealed to be well-intentioned at a later point. We don’t want to jeopardize those redemption arcs. So an orphanage was set on fire but it’s nobody’s fault, really.

bleh.

Estelle for bail reform!

Pampa boss.

So, we kept encountering people in dire situations because of the orbment power outage, but apparently the first time Estelleたち decide to try to do something about it is when it’s about fixing the Onsen? I get it tbh.

If you don’t have an Onsen, is life worth living? Good question, Estelle.

I’m tired, boss.

I’m exhausted boss.

Why would you design this fight. Who hurt you. And of course this is after they removed Croze and half my team is without Arts.

Cost me a ton of healing items and 50 minutes of my life. Oh well. Let’s never speak of this again.

I’ll finish the Onsen quest next week since it involves going to Ruan.

Next week runs a little wordier than I was expecting.
