Side Quests and Missable Content

Same as last week, hidden quest should have been triggered at the end of last week. Good luck

Hint: You may need to ask the same person about the same thing more than once for Estelle to notice any contradictions.

Hidden Book: location the airship, talk to Olivier a second time.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. How long did it take you to find the culprit of the hidden quest?

  5. Which airship conversation was most interesting to you?

  6. What are your expectations for what we’ll be handling in Zeiss.?

Detective Estelle

Ok yeah I get it, I ended up looking up what to do lol. To be fair my problem was more that I was just straight up missing people to ask, like the old guy outside. Should’ve looked more thoroughly but I made some automatic bad assumptions about where the search area was. Can’t say I feel too bad about following a guide because it definitely didn’t seem like an answer you come to through a logical series of steps. Some of that stuff, asking the old man about lunch and whatnot, was very arbitrary.

The resolution is kinda funny but it’s a crazy case of a JRPG where people are overly nice and thus naive. Many such cases but… unless I’m remembering a detail wrong here, our victim got hit and literally passed out, yeah? So this kid hit him with a door accidentally, and just left the man alone unconscious. Also didn’t confess to the accident when he knew innocent people were potentially going to get arrested or whatever, but in the first place, he left this guy laying on the floor without calling for help. And everyone is like “oh you wanted to clean the dishes and everything worked out ok, don’t worry!” :face_with_spiral_eyes: At least it is probably realistic behavior for the child of a politician

The earthquake at first made me think it was another big robot or other kind of machinery moving around underground, but honestly after hearing about how another one, that was kind of odd in its reach, happened elsewhere, I bet it’s just another weird magic technology device they’re testing? I’m placing my bets on us chasing different Ouroboros members, each with their own toy, being the pattern for the earlier chapters.

Oh, and the little conversation with Agate on the flight over was kind of nice; it’s good to see his character developed more and Estelle learning how to push his buttons. I like how the party dynamics keep growing as the more domineering or flamboyant (I wonder who that means  ) members are getting increasingly held in check by the others figuring out how to hit them back.

week 10

That really added insult to injury for me: not only was the sleuthing part very tedious, it all ends up being completely pointless. You mentioned last week that it would be nice to get a deeper insight into the elections, but in the end it’s just “well this guy is kind of a moron, case solved”. Wow amazing.

It’s very Mega Man with all the zones and their gimmick. I don’t mind it.

I hope it means that we’ll investigate the underground caves that feed the onsen eventually. There’s a very similar story beat in Legend of Legaia (evil people triggering earthquakes from an underground volcanic cave that provides water to an onsen).

Week 10

The hotel quest was a massive pain, good grief. Once you start speaking more to ベルフ it’s obvious he’s the culprit, but I ended up feeling the same way as @Daisoujou at the final reveal. He got off shockingly light! Though it let us quickly wrap this quest up after a long investigation, so I can’t say I’m too disappointed.

Olivier mentioning that the hidden books are banned in the empire makes me interested to read them. I saved the novel read until the end for the first game, but maybe I’ll give gradual reading a try this time. It was also cool to hear a bit about Shera’s time in the theatre troop!

I too am sensing a pattern with the ghost episode and now the earthquake. Investigate vaguely suspicious thing, eventually confront ouroboros agent(s). Nothing jumped into my mind as an obvious starting point for this one, but the onsen seems like a good guess! Maybe the Legend of Heroes devs are also Legend of Legaia fans…

I still haven’t read the first game’s novel :grimacing: . Was it worth it?

Maybe I should try sometime too, but what it got me thinking about way more than the book was the empire itself. I guess we have to reach an entirely different Trails subseries before we really see what it’s like there though, I think?

I read it during our break between FC and SC and it’s for sure a ton of descriptive text, very different and more difficult than the rest of the game. The novel plot is a little like FC in that it’s about jaegers chasing down the protagonist to get some secret artifact orbment, but other than that any relevance was lost on me.

Though come to think of it, one of the main characters was a secret agent type of nun, a little like Kevin. Foreshadowing?

I’d expect we won’t see it at all in this trilogy, yeah. The books being banned makes me wonder if there’s some plot foreshadowing involving the empire in there, though. There was that diplomat fight scene, and a couple airship NPCs mentioned a 調印式. It seems like set up for… something

Got some more side quests for you since this week’s went so well

Already did the hotel quest last week.

Yeah, I’m definitely glad I looked up a guide for the hotel quest right away. Having to talk to choose the same exact dialogue option twice is a little silly if you have about 7 options to try on 10 people.

But I don’t know, I thought it was a fun resolution.

Looking forward to next week, lots to do!
