Side Quests and Missable Content

No side quests this week.

There is a missable book, you can find it immediately. It is upstairs in the room that was locked on the right. (this is the same book as last week)

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. Do you like the new usable items mechanic?

  5. How much sense could you make of the villains’ conversation?

  6. What do you think of Joshua and the sky pirates teaming up?

Participation

Will you be playing along with us this week?

正義は勝つ! だね

We know かわいいは正義 and 正義は勝つ、so we can extropolate that かわいいは勝つ.

Ok the bugs were giving me a lot of trouble, never totally party wiped but they’re rough. They’d spam the call to spawn new ones, get in a big group of like 4, and then all hit and just take アネラス from full health to dead in a single turn. I think I’m still being punished for not finding both torso armors; she takes a lot of damage.

That boss fight though… I’m sure in a lot of places it won’t work, but oh my god I have been sleeping on MOV debuffing. With a few stacks of that he just literally could not act for a lot of the rest of the fight. Made me feel very smart and good for this fight but if this isn’t reigned in it’s gonna become such a degenerate cheese strategy haha. I guess I went through a whole game without noticing the potential if it was just as good before, oops. That said, late in the fight we were failing to maintain the debuff through misses and stuff and he seemed to hit really hard and throw people across the map so it might’ve been pretty hard without that. Was a very fun fight for me the way it worked out, anyway! Definitely felt like buffing/debuffing in some way needed to be used.

The game didn’t like my bluff choice about more trainees coming at all :face_with_steam_from_nose: . I figured it might not be great cause that makes them sound not that intimidating, but this way you could say someone was coming for sure. Smoke signals seemed super unreliable and the other option just being “no need to contact” was way too vague; I have no idea what the following “because ____” was going to be.

Gotta say I didn’t see the twist coming that this was all training, but maybe I should have. I suppose this undercuts the way it felt like the game was much more aggressively upping the stakes right away, but I think the twist is entertaining. And the group they fake introduced is still real so we’re still learning about the world.

Manual use items for dungeon crawling seems like a fun idea. Maybe it’s the point and click adventure player in me, heh. We’ll see if they stay obvious and heavy handed, or use them in interesting ways for side stuff, or what.

If you all don’t get this image. I enjoyed the ominous villain chat; I like this clown person and all the references to extremely 中二 sounding people they’ve gathered, haha. Not much more to say about the vague evil they’re up to but this game is definitely trying to set up a big threat in a way FC didn’t so directly.

The pirates! This is a cool development but frustrates me that we will probably not be seeing much of them for a while if they’re with Joshua, considering chasing him is the goal. I can’t imagine we’re going to catch up too soon. Hopefully we keep getting scenes like this anyway. This makes me wish I was playing Joshua’s perspective instead, heh. Also like Joshua’s new edgy look.

I dunno how much this is SC being better (which I do think there are some neat gameplay improvements and snappier plot work so far) vs just the cumulative effect of this single story building and building, but it’s already getting harder for me to be satisfied stopping when I hit the week’s end point. That says great things about the game and I very much enjoy posting here, but if I’m getting impatient at week 3 already, it’s only gonna get worse, haha.

This week

Bugs gave me one big trouble – EP wasting. Physical attacks and crafts just don’t work very well. S-crafts work, but still weaker than spells.

Boss fight was nearly won, with spamming potions. Then, he suddenly got mad and throwing 2 shadow spears in a row at アネラス – she got ko’d with damage rather than with 戦闘不能 part.

Then the boss hit Estelle hard, reducing the HP to 2 digits, 10 or something. Luckily, Estelle’s spell works in time, winning the fight. (Closest call I have survived so far.)

先輩たち got cool faces this time, but look too much like evil witches :woman_mage:

Looking forward to whatever deeds Joshua has done or is going to do… And also the pirates. Also want to learn more about his real past.

For those who are curious, here’s how this week’s fort infiltration sequence looks like in the new remaster:

I’m not quite as sold on the game’s premise so far. More shadowy people doing shadowy things for shadowy reasons. We had so much of that in FC already… I’ve had my fill.

Yeah I lucked out on this one, I ended up saying that mainly by process of elimination but I wasn’t sure at all.

I also found the combat a bit tedious this week, I hope I’ll be able to stock up on powerful quartz soon. I almost considered lowering the difficulty but haven’t done so yet.

I couldn’t figure out where the last week’s stopping point was so I just did 2 weeks in one, haha.
It was fun reading you guys not knowing who the attackers were last week.

Don’t tell me it was always possible to use S-Craft for free with Zero Craft (in FC), and I just figured that out at the start of SC…!? :eyes: :fire:
maybe it wasn’t on hard mode.

I’m now also playing on normal. I was considering restarting on easy, because these enemies in the fortress were super annoying. But it was ok. Hope it’s like on hard mode where the prologue is especially difficult (as I heard).

I actually died against the boss and restarted the battle one difficulty lower (that option didn’t exist yet in FC Evo, or I guess not on hard mode). Bosses healing more than a turn of your damage is not fun.

Very surprised about Yoshua teaming up with the pirates. I guess he needs them for his plan, as he said. Btw very cute, there was one line that suggested that Jozette might be falling for Yoshua. Quite the ladykiller, huh!

I think the prologue was a bit harder than the rest so far, mainly because you have a lot less options for quartz and arts.
