Side Quests and Missable Content

We have three new quests, but we’re just doing the middle one this week (an arbitrary decision for character count). The rest will be start of next week.

  • 懐かしのレシピ
  • デアセトの秘薬 this week
  • 鉱山の委任状

The last fishing spot can now be found by the big tree in the forest.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

I’m actually pretty glad I accidentally played ahead. I’ve been finding myself more busy recently, it got nice out suddenly so I want to go outside more, and I accidentally stumbled into running a club soon for Boku no Natsuyasumi (join us!). Was nice to get this week over relatively quickly.

The Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988)

Memories of what I did last week: I think it makes total sense Joshua’s absence is Estelle’s driving force throughout this adventure and his absence in the dream is what allows her to escape it. I in fact really like the little callback requirement to go play the harmonica where he did at the beginning of the game. I do wish her conversation with her dream mother could’ve been a little more focused on the lost time between them and not “even the grave won’t stop me from talking to you about Joshua” but it is what it is :innocent:

Schera’s family certainly has a shared fashion sense. It does kind of feel like she primarily kept the information to herself so she could make the reveal properly impactful for the players, but it is true that it wouldn’t have changed much so it doesn’t feel too contrived in the end. The amount of ties we have to the villains might be a little much but it’s neat all the same to give more purpose to our rogues gallery of letting us explore the backstories of the main party.

Was not at all expecting the Dragon and it’s pretty cool tbh.

Finished the fishing spots, only got the minimum to complete cause I missed one somewhere but that’s what you get when you hire a D+ rank bracer. Maybe Jin should’ve taken it on instead of sitting in a chair upstairs forever.

The quest had a shocking amount of story for a big fetch quest list. Luckily other than needing to go grab the fish still, I had plenty of all the parts. I’m curious how it plays out with other party members? Olivier taking half the medicine and joining the contest was really core to what happened so is it significantly different if you don’t bring him?

Week 24

I enjoyed the dream sequence! Thoughts of Joshua pulling Estelle out of it was fairly expected. It’s a nice touch that Estelle plays the song badly on the harmonica before she remembers how it’s supposed to go.

Thanks to you and Simias I also noticed that even the fake dream mom was quick to turn the conversation to Joshua with Estelle, smh. Though I did like the rest of the conversation about オムライス, the way recipes can sort of pass down without being explicitly taught via 好み and 味覚. Interesting thought. Also in this conversation: first time ever seeing 筈! Feels like spotting a rare bird.

The dragon was very cool and I like his ancient rare kanji vibe, but I’m more excited that the baddies were saying this was the last experiment. I hope this mean we’re done with the slow build up of bad guy introductions and are moving on to the actual purpose of what they’re trying to do!

After the title card cutscene: booo why do they teleport you away from the tree when you have to go back there for the fishing quest booo. on the bright side, the very first fish I got there was the パールグラス. Maybe the game prioritizes it when you pick up the Anton quest?

When Anton implied he was taken with an お姉さん at the bar earlier in the chapter, I thought for sure he meant the waitress who was also Estelle’s childhood friend. Also, 18-36杯 each!? Aina asked for their strongest stuff. How are these characters not all dead of alcohol poisoning!?

I experimented with this because I saved just before turning in the quest. Olivier shows up at the bar no matter what and whoever else is with you plays commentator with Estelle in the back. Except Schera who sits with the drinkers, though I can’t take her out of my party to experiment

I really like the song playing in the dream:

I can fix her.

With all the RPGs I play in Japanese lately you’d think I would have encountered the term 幻術 already but I had to look it up.

It’s funny how many terms can evoke magic/supernatural powers in Japanese by combining 幻・魔・呪・術・道・導・法。Keeps translators on their toes.

It’s one of my favourites

Ok how do I get the fish for the quest? Am I not at the right location? Should I use a specific rod/bait?

Well this game isn’t helping with my hate of fishing minigames.

Ah you got it? Yay.

Yeah I found another guide that gives the exact % chance and apparently there’s a slightly higher probability to catch one in ミルヒ街道, hence my relocation. I also savestated because I was running out of worms…

I did it in mistwald (did just check a guide to see where I could find it) and it took about 4 times for the right fish to come up. I was meaning to say thanks, I think focusing purely on the sound made it way easier for me. I’ve had pretty much perfect fishing accuracy since.

I thought I wouldn’t mention how even the memory of Estelle’s dead mother talks about dating Joshua for whatever reason because I don’t want to sound like a broken record (and I also think this isn’t the most offensive instance since presumably it’s Estelle’s subconscious at work) but I see that you both already mentioned it so my work here is done.

I wish I was Luciola’s brother so that the writers of this game would ship me with her.

I did not expect to have dragons in this game at all. I felt like it was going for more of a high-tech angle, with mechas becoming more common as time goes on.

I’m not entirely sure where we’re going with it but why not. Still a bit bored with the “mysterious organization doing mysterious things for mysterious reasons, β step” thing going on, but at least the various gospel trials are entertaining so far.

I didn’t think we were already at the end of the chapter, I thought we would have to work more for it. I enjoy Rolent so I wouldn’t have minded.

I got it a bunch in Persona 4 (I need to get back to that game eventually…). I think it came up in the current IMC book too, but it’s an old book so there’s a lot of unusual kanji.
