Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. What did you think of the interaction at the farm?

  5. Did you have any difficulty with the battles?

  6. Opinions on that final set of scenes?

Perhaps I’m just dumb, but I am going further than I’m meant to (in the midst of more dialog, pushing on right now) because I misunderstood the stop point. You sort of eat and do other things in a montage, but then the game is pretty explicit about how dinner is going to happen after you do some things – but you want to stop after that initial point.

Oops, changing that now thanks

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Alright well I have to leave out what I saw after, it continues for a while if you get locked into that.

Really what dominates my feelings on this week is that mist boss, oof. Their damage gimmick isn’t anything super noteworthy but we got totally stomped by status effects and it wasn’t even nearly possible. Had to run out of the mist forest back to town and buy accessories that I neglected getting for too long. So now I bought (enough to reach a total of) 4 of every single status protect accessory in the shop so I don’t have to worry about making a big trip again when it springs something awful on me. Even then the fight is just a bit of a slog as they keep resummoning those enemies that cancel your arts and they’re fairly evasive to non-arts. Extremely fitting timing as the FF2 club was talking about needing accessories to block status in games, heh.

I really like the excuse to show us Estelle’s mother for once; it’s nice to see some of her past, though the glimpse we get is a time when Cassius is actually home and it’s very idealized compared to what her normal circumstances must have been. But having her mom, and the weight of her absence, feel more like a part of her past is something we haven’t seen much of. There is certainly no way that early next week they will discuss Joshua.

I wanted to joke that Estelle would say “Mom and dad, I need romance in my life, can you give me a brother?” but she came out and asked for a brother anyway! The rest is implied. I think that conversation was before the save point, I hope.

Also today I learned if I play my Vita while charging, the touch screen randomly activates itself. I think it’s related to having a third party charger but you kinda take what you can get now that these consoles are aging. That was super annoying and made me miss some lines til I worked it out because the touch screen skips dialog :sob:

Estelle and Scheherazade were having a discussion that didn’t involve Joshua so Shera panicked and just slapped her in the face. Close one.

I wanted this to turn into the Airplane scene where they all take turns slapping some sense into her:

Week 23

I learned my lesson with a previous boss early on (I think it was the first optional sewer boss?) that you need to make sure you have enough status negation accessories for everybody before you head out on a mission. I had a rough time with the mist boss at first but luckily I was able to reload to just before the fight, fixed my accessories, and then finished it off easily. Maybe that’s a little cheap compared to muscling through without save scumming but in my defense… it would have been a giant pain. Confusion and sleep? Ayyy.

Not too much to say about this week except I’m sort of glad I put it off until now. I can push right on to the conclusion of this bit without becoming a filthy pre-player  Gotta say I love the good ol’ idyllic dream trap trope. I wonder what’ll snap Estelle out of it! j/k it’s probably Joshua.

I just finished this week’s part so am able to say, it is!

My god this boss… People who play this game in hard difficulty must truly be masochists.

Yeah I managed to beat the boss first try but it took me so long… What mean encounter design. Enemies with tons of HP and resistance that can cancel arts and inflict sleep and confuse and call for backup.

I joked about Shera slapping Estelle above but I didn’t quite understand that scene. I didn’t get what Estelle thought she did wrong (she “froze”? When?) and I don’t understand why Shera thinks it warrants such a response.

Then again, Shera was apparently routinely given alcohol by Cassius when she was 12, so she probably has to deal with some trauma of her own:

Cool.

「欲しい」って?それより、「欲望」がマシだろう?

Anyway, it’s pretty clear that Schera has a 心当たり of who this chapter’s villain is. I wonder who it could be and why she keeps it to herself.

I was crashing out fighting that at first; you’re not alone.

battle of the bell

I was using every potions, and forgot to look at the HP bar direction, mistaking NUM heal for damage. Lost with 1 boss life full (and no minions). Anyway, who is who is already in the descriptions.

Got it on second try anyway.

Then, I tried to wake from sleep  :door: which ends the chapter (Next Week, prob). Missing one fishing spot :fishing_pole:, maybe soon. btw, it seems that spots also count at the time I start the quest (4, already counting the past, to be found 1 more last week).
