To start with, we’re just getting past the opening sequence. Save as soon as the game lets you (after the video and chapter title screens). I strongly suggest wandering around and talking to NPCs when you get the chance (before the opening video).

It is very difficult to get maximum Bracer Rank in this game. If you miss more than 2 BP, you cannot get A rank. If you care about this, use a guide. I’ll be pointing out side quests in the details below, but I don’t want to just tell you the correct answers.

Side Quests and Missable Content

So I borrowed this from a guide, which shows which NPCs are available to talk to, which have a conversation to have, and the guide gives these every time the dialogue changes, which is quite often.

The important thing to note is there’s a good dozen or so people who’ll have a full on conversation with Estelle. I probably won’t point it out every time as that would be excessive, just keep in mind if you want to talk to people.

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. What do you think of Estelle’s reaction to this whole situation?

  5. Do you trust the new guy?

  6. Now that there’s something of a basis to start with, where do you expect the story to go from here?

I appreciated the break, now I’m looking forward to revisiting the world of Trails!

Are we going to switch from Cassius glazing (he’s S-rank btw) to Joshua glazing?

Nothing annoys me more in JRPGs than when the in-lore power level of a character is completely unmatched by their gameplay abilities. There’s no way that 12yo pre-FC Joshua would have been a threat to Cassius (S-rank).

This game is better than most imo, but whether that is also your opinion depends on you. It is also one of the things that gets worse in later arcs.

I did like that they actually made Lawrence as powerful as he was claimed to be when you face him in FC, even if it meant that I lost the fight…

Ok then.

With the PSP version I don’t see the data if I “load” from the main SC menu, but I get a prompt when I start a new game asking if I want to load the FC clear data.

No I’m doing it from the load clear data section; it just doesn’t find anything for some reason and then throws me into the game.

But it does find stuff for the first search for system data or something? I didn’t read it when it went by really fast but it gives me some items. The more important one won’t work though.

Are you playing on an emulator? Maybe the save data is siloed.

The PSP version just immediately found the clear data when I said I wanted to load it.

Yeah. I honestly barely need it anymore but I was doing it this way because this is the texthookable version (and with voices from the start and etc).

What emulator are you using? You may just have to rename the FC save data so that it’s found when running the SC ROM.

Vita3k.

Saves seem to be placed in folders by game, and all just like SAVEDATA0000, SAVEDATA0001, etc.

Ok I solved it by moving them, nevermind thanks. I had tried that but didn’t quite move every piece.

Glad you figured it out

Nice to be back.

Week 1!

Man it really directly picks up the moment we left off. Feels nice and nostalgic to be back in Estelle’s hometown, and I did wander around greeting people for a while. It’s kind of more sad the more conversations you have, everyone asking about Joshua and she says he went home, and they’re always just like “Oh… he did? Huh, ok…” I like how Estelle’s characterization works here; she knows he isn’t home but has chosen to be positive and believe in him in spite of reality around her.

Very good first impression of our new traveling priest friend, though it’s funny how he doesn’t respond at all to Estelle describing Joshua as “like a sibling” and then talking about how she messed up the 告白 timing.

I guess you all might not get this image, so here it is.

Nice plot development to have Estelle doing intensive bracer training I think, it’s nice to narratively find ways to scale her up considering we’re going to be doing bigger things this game, I’m sure.

I wonder if you all have the same opening video I do, cause those frequently change when news versions of games are made. There are some nice familiar faces in it, anyway :eyes: and I like the designs of people who appear to be the evil wizards conspiracy group in it.

Now, how long until I get to see the pirates and Dorothy again I wonder.

we don’t

this should be obvious but don’t read the comments in either video

And having just watched the Evo opening I am hiding it behind a hide details on purpose. Maybe this isn’t the op, maybe it’s a fan animation to the song, it is the full version of the song and not the shorter opening version after all…

Big spoiler ahead:

Onsen is still here omg

I like the effect where the rain makes the screen a little blurry as drops hit the “camera,” and if you just sit here you can hear little bits of thunder in the background.

Yes it’s fun to see the small changes/improvements.

I also noticed that there’s now a fishing book and an “event item” options in the quick menu.

Also I see that you wrote 7.3k characters for this week, does this include all the optional dialogue in Rolent or just the mandatory stuff? Because that felt longer to me… but maybe I’m just a bit rusty.

At any rate I can feel that this week was a lot easier to get through than week 1 of FC over a year ago. Only minimal lookups and a lot less confusion.

W1
  • Estelle full delulu
  • That pilgrim priest Kevin is basically a toned-down Olivier. Seems nice though. Easier to understand, too.
  • Apparently Olivier got abused by Scheherazade and the guild lady. Wish it were me frfr.
  • The miners are on holiday. I wondered if it’s going to be plot relevant or if it’s just an excuse to have them in town for the dialogues.
  • Lots of NPC talking about mistvald. Including tales of mischievous fairies? Most subtle JRPG quest foreshadowing.
  • I finally decided to look up 本山 to figure out what it actually meant. Turns out it’s not about mountains in a literal sense… Too bad, I was already picturing a lone monastery on a mountain summit somewhere.
  • Some new music tracks, yay! Was happy to hear the Rolent music again though, felt nostalgic and homey.
  • News clothes! Huge.
  • Estelle having to fend for herself and make her own decisions without having to rely on Joshua is good character development. It’s rare to have women protag in JRPGs in my experience so I really enjoy these dynamics. It feels fresh and original.

How much of the dialogue changes if you don’t load a FC save? Many people in Rolent refer to past quests (and snickers, too), I wonder if that’s different if you’re starting from a fresh save.

I hadn’t included the optional dialogue because it is technically optional. I could include it from now on, but that would make it take a lot longer to get through the actual plot. Opinions?
