If you make sure all currently available side quests have been completed and reported, you’ll be at the right point to stop for this week. The main quest should have three bullet points in the 手帳.

Side Quests
  • 親書の配達

Go grab your new side quest IMMEDIATELY once you’ve gotten control again. You’re going to want to make sure all quests have been completed.

If you’re looking for books, a hidden one is now available somewhere. Specifically, talk to 兵士ハロルド at ヴェルデ橋

Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If necessary, include an explanation of any discrepancies in the Ebook page numbers from physical page numbers. If there is an easy shortcut for some ebook versions to relate back to physical page numbers, it would be worth it to include it as a third bullet here, or if you want to use chapter page numbers instead of volume page numbers, as is the case with some manga. For example:
Example

For the Kindle version of this manga, the page numbers and the location number are always 3 apart. If you subtract 3 from the location, this will give you the accurate page number!

OR

Please use the chapter page numbers, instead of the volume page numbers. These are located in between the panels!

Discussion Questions

  1. What sentence/passage gave you the most difficulty? Feel free to request some help, or if you figured it out on your own break it down for the rest of us!

  2. What was your favorite new vocab word from this week’s reading?

  3. Was there any passage that you found particularly intriguing? Did it resonate with you (either positively or negatively)? Was it surprising? Offer any insight or new perspective? Was it just beautifully written?

  4. What did you think of the scene on the clock tower?

  5. Any theories on what those vague warnings were about?

  6. Initial impressions of Bose?

is this a video game www
and why was i pinged lol

This is a video game, you can look at the home thread if you’re interested.

You shouldn’t have gotten a ping (notification in top right on your avatar) because this is new, unless you’ve got something in your settings that tells you when a new thread is posted.

thank youuu !!
… how hard is the vocab in my game lol

It’s difficult, I couldn’t recommend it for a beginner. But we do have a pretty thorough vocab sheet.

uuuuuhhhhhhhhh
maybe ill play. with a notebook and the vocab sheet printed out lmao
do it for immersion and new and exciting vocab then

Now that I’ve read some of your posts on other threads, I’m getting the feeling that you are a beginner. If I’ve misunderstood feel free to ignore all of what I’m about to say.

This game will be too hard for you.

Reading is hard. If you’ve not read anything before, even simple stuff will be hard. Have you seen the book clubs yet? The Absolute Beginners Book Club has just started a new book. You might want to look at that, because this club will be a lot more difficult.

When I said the vocab sheet is “pretty thorough,” that’s because myself and other people in the club are updating it as we read. Printing it off in advance is not really feasible as it is being updated. Personally I am not putting in words I don’t need to look up, so it is not “completely thorough.” You would still need to look up words that were not added to the sheet. There is no furigana to help with lookups either.

How are you with grammar? My own grammar knowledge isn’t quite good enough for this game. I’m getting by on fuzzy understanding from how well I know the localisation. Verbs in the vocab sheet are in their dictionary form, how well do you know conjugations? Characters can and will use slang versions of grammar which are even more difficult to look up.

This game is not short. The opening scene is 2799 characters before you can save. (I counted.) Do you have the reading stamina for that? I don’t. Are you prepared to spend multiple hours on multiple days for this?

If you’re really motivated and wanted to give this a try anyway, I’m not going to stop you. (I physically can’t even if I wanted to.) But I would really recommend thinking about if this is the right level for you before you spend money buying a game you can’t understand enough to play.

You are more than welcome to post in book club threads even years after the club has finished, so if you’d like to return to this later when you’re ready, that’s more than fine. I just got the feeling that you’re not ready yet.

I apologise that this is harsh. I haven’t yet figured out how to be nice without losing the message so I err on the side of bluntness. Good luck with your studies.

Completed the main stuff for this week!

Impressions

Very good character building for Estelle beyond her initial klutzy behavior. She’s human and things really do get to her sometimes, but very mentally hardy and able to put on the positive joking act to get through it, and likely for the sake of the people around her too. Pretty likeable character at this stage.

Did you know that Scheherazade likes alcohol?

For now I beelined the new town, turned in the letter, and reported to the guild. I’ll get exploring the new town next time, but it’s very nice to have a change of scenery and at a glance it does seem to draw a nice contrast to where we started. Though even the starting town was nice and seemed to have a lot going on, more than you’d expect from how people act like it’s so rural.

It’s interesting seeing the conflict now between the military and the guild; I like that they’re developing these organizational clashes. I’ve sort of assumed the warning about going to the north was because of the presence of these people hostile to the guild members, but we’ll see.

This game isn’t usually a hard read for me, and I wouldn’t really say it was still, but there were definitely more unknown words than usual with the somewhat increased focus on the war and all that.

Thanks! It’s art of my character from Splatoon 3; I play too much Splatoon haha. I had it commissioned – wanted to share the artist for credit but they’ve gotten rid of their Twitter; I think they don’t do commissions anymore unfortunately.

Week 10 thoughts

Estelle’s background was teased a bit when talking with some of the town NPCs but it was harsher than I thought it’d be. You expect this bubbly girl is just following in her dad’s footsteps to become a bracer, but it seems like the trauma over her mom is what’s really driving her. Especially fitting as it seemed to me like Estelle isn’t always that impressed with her dad. I enjoyed the whole scene a lot, including when Joshua crashed and burned at the end.

My initial impression of Bose was that it was destroying my frame rate! But after adjusting the game config, it was a nice change. It does have a bit of a standardized RPG commerce themed town feel to it when you talk to the residents. They mostly all say something about business/shopping/etc., but I’m hoping that’s just part of the intro to the area.

I haven’t explored fully yet but have spied 4 familiar NPCs so far: Dorothy the photographer, Rita the maid from the mayor’s house, and the 2 pilgrims that were passing through Rolent. Nial is probably somewhere, too. I’ll find him :eyes:

Side note, did anyone else do a double take when Scott the soldier opened the huge, castle-looking bridge gate with a remote? Even knowing they have magic tech, it seemed funny.

Ok, finally caught up. I’m going to refrain from commenting too much on the plot these next few weeks because while I had basically forgotten everything until now, I actually do remember a few key plot elements for Bose. I also remember associating the big market building with a frustrating feeling but I can’t remember why. Maybe just because there was so much stuff to buy and I didn’t have the cash for it…

It was kind of the opposite for me, there was a lot of text this week but I didn’t struggle too much with it. I’ve played a bunch of JRPGs in Japanese already, the martial vocab doesn’t faze me. I was caught off guard by 爺 however. I’ll add it to my kanji deck.

If that’s the case, I’m already there with you! Here I thought I was rolling in cash…

You have chance to get a little more mira in week 11.

NPC

It’s unnatural to know the name of the person you first met and talk to for the first time, but sufficient important characters won’t have the name shown immediately. (It’s also unnatural to just walk into every room and into the kitchen, but at least many chests can’t be opened.)

Presumably, MC haven’t gone to Bose before.

I don’t know what they are dining at the restaurant. (Week 11?)

I haven’t bought and tried every 料理, but recipes are guessable and cooking is quick-anywhere?

I can’t find Rolent Issue 1 reissued/secondhand being sold. Maybe not yet.

I have never read monsters’ description until this day… NPC were mostly talked to only once, but I tried to talk to everyone.

Clock tower

Clock tower? Going up there and I see only a watch tower with no roof.

Anyway, more backstory is nice.

You need to discover the recipes either but being told them from an NPC or simply by eating the dish once. Then you can cook it anywhere at any time as long as you have the ingredients of course.

If you look from outside, the platform they’re standing on is actually not the top of the tower, the roof and the actual clock are just rendered invisible when you’re inside so that you can easily see the characters from above. That confused me too at first.
